Eric Louzil, producer of the film, said they got Keith Moon involved by promising to give him cocaine and a TV set. They drove to Palm Springs and spent $1400 for the cocaine to make him happy. They were terrified they'd be arrested the entire time.
This was a student short film produced by Eric Louzil at UCLA. He said in an interview that they were originally going to make a short called Public Doom about killer bees starring David L. Lander and Michael Mckean (a.k.a. Lenny and Squiggy of Laverne & Shirley (1976) fame), but they were too controlling so they dropped them and came up with the premise of Sonic Boom instead.
Producer Eric Louzil said the way they cast the film was they would get together at production meetings, take out the entertainment section of the Los Angeles Times and find out who had made it into press. Then they would essentially stalk these performers and ask them to help out with their student film.
