Anaarkali not Sanskari enough, Censor Board? If some latest developments are to go by, Swara Bhaskar’s upcoming film ‘Anaarkali of Aarah’ has landed itself into hot waters with the Cbfc. As per reports, the Censor Board wants as many as 11 cuts in the film, which is rather shocking! Out of the 11 scenes which are under the Censor’s scanner, one scene which has been proposed to be chopped off is the trailer that features actor Sanjay Tripathi talking to the lead, Swara bhaskar: “Amitabh Bachchan ke entry li hain aur chah rahi hain hum Amrish Puri banein!” Another scene features the word ‘Arjun’ in a poem, which according to the Censor Board might irk certain audiences. After the cuts are approved, the film is expected to get ‘A’ certification. Fighting the cuts? However, the director isn’t planning to protest or fight the cuts. Speaking about the issue,...

For all those cinema lovers who are planning to catch up on a Bollywood film at 6 pm in a multiplex, you will have to rethink about your plans. The reason being Maharashtra's Culture Minister Vinod Tawde's announcement that the multiplexes should now be screening Marathi films during the prime time from 6pm to 9pm. This decision was taken in the state assembly which was held yesterday.
Tawade reasoned his move stating that when Ashok Chavan was the acting Chief Minister, he had given concessions to multiplexes that the morning time (shows) will be reserved for Marathi cinemas. Tawade added that, he has only changed the same to prime time now, but had not changed the number of shows the multiplexes will have to organize.

The four characters come face to face with gruesome acts of violence in battles of identity, sexuality, religion, love, and family.

When a film is “banned” by the Censor Board of Film Certification, you know you are onto something. Well, that is exactly the case with Raj Amit Kumar’s film Unfreedom.
Homosexuality.
Islam.
Thinking outside of convention.
Unfreedom breaks all the “rules”.
The film follows two different lives, the storyline pivoting on a female same-sex relationship and the dangers of religious extremism.
Shifting between New York and Delhi, one story explores the kidnapping of a liberal Muslim scholar by a Muslim terrorist. The other story dives into a woman’s journey -a woman secretly in love with another woman. She faces the challenges of this love when she refuses an arranged marriage set up by her religious father.
Classified as “too controversial” for release in India, the film will release in North American theatres on the 29th of May 2015 and simultaneously on digital channels via Film Buff.

Recent news of the involvement of the CEO of the Censor Board of Film Certification, Rakesh Kumar, in corruption shocked the industry. After allegations of Kumar accepting bribes to pass films came to light, an investigation into the same had been launched. Post the investigation Kumar had been remanded to judicial custody, for which he had later applied for bail. However, on Friday a special Cbi court rejected his bail application on the grounds that investigations in the bribery case indicated that even the co-accused in the scam were working at his behest. Further citing other evidence, like witness statements that show co-accused 'worked at Rakesh Kumar's behest' and the fact that Rs 10 lakhs had been recovered from Kumar's house along with 33 branded watches and Rs 65 lakhs worth of jewellery. While rejecting the bail application, special Cbi judge Rn Joshi observed that even though the alleged crime was not heinous,...

On Tuesday, the Ministry Of Information & Broadcasting took the decision to suspend the disgraced CEO of the Censor Board Of Film Certification (Cbfc) Rakesh Kumar after Kumar's arrest. A senior officer from the I &B Ministry said, "Rakesh Kumar has left our Ministry looking compromised and embarrassed. This is the biggest embarrassment for our Ministry in recent times. We would have suspended him the moment the scandal broke out. But we wanted to wait until the Cbi provided the documented allegations. We still haven't received the papers from the Cbi. But now with his arrest, we are going ahead with the suspension." The aftermath of the scandal that has rocked the Cbfc has been far-reaching. One hears from reliable sources that the Information & Broadcasting Ministry is considering scrapping the Cbfc. I & B sources stoutly deny this suggestion. "We are definitely not looking at scrapping the Cbfc. That is a ridiculous idea.

Anything for a laugh? No more, it seems. When it comes to religious sentiments, the Narendra Modi government has communicated very strict guidelines to the Censor Board. No improper jokes on proper names, no matter which religious community, the name may belong to. One of the first films to get an axe under the strict terms of Modi-fications is Akshay Kumar's comedy film Entertainment. The character played by Johnny Lever is named Abdullah in the film. The Cbfc (the Censor Board Of Film Certification) which viewed the film late last week has asked for Johnny Lever's character's name to be changed. Says a source, "Lever's character is named Abdullah which is a very sacred name. Throughout the film other characters keep mispronouncing Abdullah's name, calling him all sorts of things like 'rashogollah' and 'mashallah'. Social Activist Teena Sharma has demanded for a Cbi enquiry against the Censor Board of Film Certification (Cbfc) as the activist believes that double-meaning dialogues, foul language and explicit scenes are used freely in films.
Apparently, the double meaning dialogues of Anil and Ameesha in Race 2 left her fuming and she even criticized the recently released D-Day for featuring a sex scene between Shruti Hassan and Arjun Rampal, despite being in the category of U/A films. According to her, films released recently have violated the Cinematograph Act 1952, The Young Persons Act, 1956 and The Indecent Representation of Women Act, 1986. The activist is quite motivated to support this campaign, despite the fact that she does not have many supporters for it.
The hearing on her case will be held on August 7.

Films that gained a ‘cult following’ over the years, despite being unnoticed on release
Silsila
Yash Chopra is looked upon as the grandfather of candyfloss romance, an antithesis to the more ‘artistic’ genre of films. One wonders why. Here’s what his early films were about:
Unwed mothers and illegitimate children – Dhool ka Phool (1959)
Partition and the rise of Hindu fundamentalism – Dharmputra (1961)
Taut, song less thriller about a fugitive, a lone woman and a corpse – Ittefaq (1969)
A man who lives with his wife and the ‘other woman’, Hindi Cinema’s first Ménage à trois- Daag (1973)
In 1981, we had another of his equally risqué works, Silsila. Expectedly, sparks flew when the Screen God of the time shared screen space with the reigning diva. Rekha and Amitabh were quite an item on screen and allegedly, off screen too. The grapevine has it that Chopra was inspired to make Silsila on this relationship...
