The concept of the internet and technology like mobile phones increasing loneliness and isolation between people was inspired by societal fears at the time of production that Kiyoshi Kurosawa observed that, because the internet and chat rooms along with mobile phones will enable you to communicate without meeting in-person, that technology could increase depression and loneliness among the populace, and that the only people who'd be using them are lonely people who have no friends or any means to meet with people. Though the technology in the film is now dated, the themes have been praised by critics and audiences as the film ages, as they're often regarded as being way ahead of their time.
The film's Japanese title, which is written in kanji, translates into English as "Circuit."
