Johan van Dam (Peter Tuinman), his wife Vera and his children Karin and Teun arrive in the country Tyros, that gave them political asylum. In the Netherlands there is a military government. The dissident printer Johan succeeded to hide from being arrested, but after some time he was discovered and arrested. He was tortured. His wife and children got problems because lack of money. Because of international pression a number of political prisoners (Johan being one of them) got the permission to leave the country. In Tyros the family arrived at a rural village. In the beginning there were adaptation problems because of cultural differences. But after a few years, when the family was adapted well, the problems are the home situation. Johan is unemployed and feels being a worthless exile. With comrads he tries to keep the illusion to support the resistance in the Netherlands from abroad.
