The character Quentin Kemmer is named after Ed Kemmer, star of the original The Spider (1958).

As an obvious nod to marvel comics, Quinton is a fan of the Arachnid Avenger (A play on Spider-Man & The Avengers) & also names his dog Thor (frequent member of the Avengers).

Note that no matter how many return visits characters make to the caves no one ever uses a flashlight. This comment applies to the 1958 version.

While visiting the comic book store, John Cho's character has a 50s style B-movie featuring a giant spider done with the same style of special effects that Burt I. Gordon used in the original Earth Vs The Spider.

Theresa Russell would go on to play Emma Marko, the Sandman's wife in Spider-Man 3. This film is considered a dark take on the Spider-Man lore.
