Three cheers for grown-up sci-fi anthology series Electric Dreams, which promises to be a real treasure trove. Spoilers...

1.1 The Hood Maker
A hunched robot in a Pac a Mac creeps behind a pillar. A quintet of babies with floating umbilical cords dance a ring of roses in mid-air. A neon sign advertises the services of a four-breasted woman. Welcome, say the opening credits, to the world of electric dreamer Philip K. Dick.
Or more properly, a world inspired by Philip K. Dick. Episode one of this ten-part anthology series has taken liberties with Dick’s 1955 short story The Hood Maker, and quite rightly. That was written under the shadow of McCarthyism, when loyalty and betrayal were matters of state. This was written under the shadow of the Snooper’s Charter and corporate data mining. This month marks the one-year anniversary of Catalog from the Beyond! I thank those of you who have followed along with my inane babbling for the last twelve months, and to celebrate, I’ve decided to do an extra large edition featuring not one, but two movies that I’ve been circling since I started this column. I’ve said before that I was a latecomer to the Psycho franchise, with my rationale being that the movie was so ingrained in pop culture that I assumed I knew what it had to offer without needing to actually watch it. Now, of course, I know that I was very wrong. But after finally coming to my senses, I subsequently noticed a sizable portion of the horror community that also sings the praises of the two sequels that it spawned in 1983 and 1986.
What intrigued me about these two movies is that although...

Reinforcing way too many stereotypes of directionless potheads, the cannabis laced Disjointed is a mess that doesn't even have the benefit of giving you the munchies. With the first 10-episodes of the series launching on Netflix on August 25, what the Chuck Lorre co-created and Kathy Bates-led show does do is make you wonder what was going through the heads of such talented people? Or, as I say in my video review above, what were they smoking? Take away the profanity and…...

Take away the hustle and bustle of the city, add green smoothies, massages and nail art and you pretty much have the recipe to happiness. Near the corner of Essex and Stanton in NYC, this happiness (or rather chill) awaits, thanks to Cyndi Ramirez. It's called Chillhouse, and you can go there for a manicure, massage or even...a beer. Sounds like a dream, right? Well, that's how it started, as an idea. "My husband and I were looking for a place to get massages one day, when it dawned on us that there wasn't a spa environment that appealed to us," the owner told E! News. In the last five years, Netflix Chef Content Officer Ted Sarandos has blown up old television and movie models. And judging from the audience that packed Fox’s Zanuck Theatre on the first day of this year’s Produced By Conference, the industry is coming around to his way of thinking.

A one-time “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman” Sunday-night binge-watcher and Superstar Video staffer in Phoenix, Arizona, Sarandos is now the biggest content creator in Hollywood as Netflix now boasts 100 million subscribers worldwide. And he easily won over the room.
Here’s how he did it.

Nearly three years after releasing the original Slumber Party Massacre as a special edition Blu-ray, Scream Factory has finally put a double feature disc of its two sequels: 1987’s Slumber Party Massacre II and 1990’s Slumber Party Massacre III. It’s something of a good news/bad news situation.
The good news is that Slumber Party Massacre II is really crazy and really fun. The bad news is that part 3 is not. Picking up the subversive campiness of where Amy Holden Jones’ original left off, Slumber Party Massacre II writer/director Deborah Brock dials up the weirdness and adds an abstract, hallucinatory bent to the first sequel. It’s bigger and stranger, more colorful and experimental; I’m reminded of the leap from Prom Night to Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II, except that the original Slumber Party Massacre is a better movie than Prom Night.

Deadpool is virtually indestructible and cannot be killed... or can he? Deadpool is one of my favorite Marvel characters because of his charming sense of humor. As you know, he has been blessed or cursed with a healing power that keeps him alive and kicking ass, so how does one defeat Deadpool if one finds oneself going up against him? Well, Looper lists six ways that could defeat him. The explain:
Filmgoers have finally discovered something Deadpool's longtime comics fans have known for a while: the Merc with a Mouth is nearly impossible to kill. He soaks up bullets, survives buildings burning down, and even regrows a hand in the weirdest way possible. It's easy to leave the theater wondering exactly how anyone could ever defeat someone with such an amazing healing factor. Fortunately, years of Deadpool comics have offered an array of techniques for accomplishing just such a goal.

There’s no getting around the latest Netflix original’s monumentally dumb premise. A British teenager has an accident that causes shards of his smartphone to become lodged in his brain. This grants him iPhone superpowers, leading him to battle crime as the heroic vigilante iBoy.
Okay, okay, stop giggling. Yes, it’s stupid. Yes, it doesn’t make sense. And yes, ‘iBoy’ is a godawful superhero name. But consider how ridiculous it is for a teenage boy to be bitten by a radioactive spider and getting spider superpowers, or four pet turtles being splashed by mutagenic goo and becoming ninjas, or a scientist being irradiated and turning into a big angry green man or… Well you get the picture. My point is that superhero origin stories are usually pretty silly and you shouldn’t be so quick to judge iBoy, an unexpectedly compelling and contemporary take on the classical superhero template.

Main Street was inundated during Saturday’s March On Main as approximately 4,000 people according to police estimates took over Park City.
Marchers resisted the snow and low temperatures to bear placards in support of women’s rights, the environment and healthcare as a strong anti-Donald Trump sentiment rippled through the crowd. At time of writing there had been no arrests.
The march was one of 350 sister events across the Us and 20 countries in conjunction with the huge Women’s March On Washington on the first day of the 45th Us president’s term of office.

By showing signs of intelligent life in a universe of diseased, digital drivel, Assassin's Creed stands above the herd of movies based on video games by default. Given the low-bar status of the genre, that's not saying much – remember Warcraft, when the gifted filmmaker Duncan Jones tried and disastrously failed to instill soul into a lifeless, role-playing franchise? That should have been a lesson to director Justin Kurzel and his producer/lead actor Michael Fassbender ... and yet these defiant rebels think they can change things. Ensemble festive comedy Office Christmas Party stars Jason Bateman, Kate McKinnon, Jennifer Aniston and 40 minutes of good material...
You sit through a lot of middling comedies in this racket, and I find it more interesting to read the audience than the film a lot of the time. Earlier this year The Boss was a good example of when a failure to establish character and grab a couple of big laughs early on leads to a quick death, and you could hear how no one felt up for laughing at some great stuff that came later, because they knew the rest of the room was staying quiet. Office Christmas Party is far better than that, but there came a point, about 40 minutes in, when the room decided: nah, no sale.
And yet all the ingredients are there: it’s an original property with built-in sequel potential, a cast full of all...

Live sports and “Empire” — that’s what Fox does. Or at least, that’s what has made the broadcast network a surprising No. 1 for the still-young fall TV season. Take away those NFL overruns and a classic 2016 World Series, however, and it’s a very different story. Remove news programming, as well, and you’ve got completely different rankings for entertainment series-only. And in case you were wondering, that’s a legitimate way to measure these things. Through seven weeks, NBC is actually tops in entertainment programming, averaging a 2.0 rating among adults 18-49 — the key demographic for advertisers. That number includes.

Entropy. That is the ultimate theme in Star Trek: Generations. As signified by the long tracking shots of a bottle of champagne, culminating with it smashing upon the bow of the new Enterprise. The mechanism by which all change happens. How order turns to chaos, and why all good things must come to an end.
It’s also the only word that can possibly integrate the two disparate halves of the film. The treatise on the afterlife and impermanence, versus Data discovering the meaning of laughter. But really, that’s clutching at straws (and that’s coming from the guy who defended Star Trek V). For all the good ideas and fascinating moments, Generations is the curate’s egg...

Episode one of handsome new BBC supernatural period drama The Living And The Dead feat. Colin Morgan ends on a gripping hook…
This review contains episode 1 spoilers.
Ashley Pharoah, the creator of The Living And The Dead, made his name writing genre TV with a twist. He and Matthew Graham added a time travel mystery to the police procedural in Life On Mars and Ashes To Ashes, then spliced the supernatural with court drama in Eternal Law.
Pharoah’s new series The Living And The Dead plays the same game. It’s a traditional Victorian ghost story with Something Else Going On. Two events in the first episode alert viewers to this fact – the vapour trail of a modern airplane in the 1894 Somerset sky and the closing sight of a twenty-first century woman, iPad in hand, walking around the nineteenth-century farmhouse in which the story is set.

President Obama said Thursday that the Supreme Court's decision to block his plan to defer the deportation of millions of undocumented immigrants was "frustrating" and indicative of the court's inability "to function the way it is supposed to." Obama spoke out about the court's 4-4 deadlock - which effectively blocked his executive action on immigration - at a press conference on Thursday, saying, "Our founders conceived this country as refuge for the world. Normally when new consoles are announced it is an exciting time in the generation, but when the new consoles are not really a leap in value that excitement quickly vanishes. Do console owners really need a half step up mid-generation? I don’t think so.
Generally speaking, when a console generation comes to an end things get rather exciting. The current consoles have been milked of all their glory and people start dreaming up what new consoles can do. Console gamers are unique, we buy a unit and we expect it to last 8-10 years, we expect to have the best experience with the unit we bought. If we wanted (or if we could afford) PC gaming, we would switch, but we don’t. We watch as a console grows and the hardware is pushed to the absolute limits by the end of its lifecycle.
Yet the major game companies figured they could destroy that formula and nobody would notice. “But nobody gets left behind,” right? No, and for this reason, I’m not thrilled about the announcement of Microsoft’s Project Scorpio or Sony’s PlayStation Neo.
For those that may have missed the announcement, Microsoft took time at the end of their press conference to squeeze in a sizzle reel that announced a new Xbox One. Or a new console, I’m not sure entirely what their plan is with it. Nobody is at this point. The new unit is called Scorpio and it will boast 8 Teraflops of power, support 4K 60Fps gaming, and have additional heavy hitter tech. To put that in perspective even current high end PC’s have a hard time maintaining that visual output, so the thing is a beast to say the least. (But with that type of tech in a box, it’s no wonder a price point was left out.) The new unit is expected to launch in 2017, but the twist to the story is that it’s basically an Xbox One. The unit will play the same games and have the same support as an Xbox One, but with added performance.
People will be left behind.
I don’t know why both companies keep pretending we are all stupid and saying “nobody will be left behind.” The dumb slogan is working because people that fell for it are repeating the phrase all over the place, but I’m sorry to break the news….people Will be left behind.
Why the hell would a console maker put money and time into a new unit, and increase the price, with absolutely no benefit behind it? They won’t. Yes games will release across both platforms, but there will be a noticeable different experience between the two. The further we move along, the further that gap will spread. Eventually the bigger and better version will become the focus and the old units will be tossed.
Yes you will get Game A on both sides, but people with the new console are going to have a way better experience than those on old units. Visual differences, performance differences. Look at the 3Ds. People couldn’t even review Hyrule Warriors properly on “old 3Ds” units because it was such an inferior version of the game in every way.
Microsoft Outright Lied
Look I don’t support either new units from Sony or Microsoft. I don’t blame Microsoft for doing it because Sony already ran away with the idea laughing. They had no choice. Yet even with all this pressure resting on their shoulders when asked straight up by multiple sources if they would follow, Microsoft said no. They denied it, they said it was a dumb move, they said they wouldn’t alienate fans.
In fact a direct quote from Phil Spencer himself: “"I’m not a big fan of Xbox One and a half. If we’re going to move forward, I want to move forward in big numbers."(GameSpot)
That’s why when Microsoft announced Xbox One S I was thrilled. It looked like they stuck to their word and were instead going the slim route. It was an enticing console, it was exciting…. Then they kill that positivity by announcing Scorpio. Did Microsoft not learn at all about flip flopping all over the place? This backtracking method is what got them into trouble with Xbox One to begin with. At this point when Microsoft says anything, expect them to go in a totally different direction.
So What Purpose Is Xbox One S
Did I mention Xbox One S? Why did Microsoft announce two different units during the same E3 conference? Xbox One S took a good amount of time from the conference and seemed to be a big highlight, which is great. Then they go announce a new unit which is a beefy Xbox One, or a new unit, I’m not sure. But why? Which one as a consumer am I expected to get excited about? They had me hooked as an Xbox One owner to upgrade to the S, and now I think I have to save my money for Scorpio.
Vr Was Planned
A big purpose behind these slight upgrade units seems to be blame on Vr. Yet why wasn’t this planned for when the units released to begin with? Vr has been in development for years now, or at least that is what the marketing has been telling me. Now it’s finally hitting and we suddenly need new units in order to experience things correctly…..
That being said, Microsoft has always gone the Ar route when talking about Vr. They have the Hololens in development and their past E3 spent a majority of the time on that tech. Now we skip to this E3 and the focus is now Vr?
Where Are The Games
My biggest complaint about all of this is the outright lack of content we have explored so far this generation. Take away Fps titles and you are not left with very many titles to choose from. Yes there have been some gems to talk about here and there, but nothing that truly made me say “this is why I bought this console.” So why would I go buy it again?
Microsoft Has PC
The thing about this unit is that Microsoft full on jumped in the PC wagon. All their upcoming games are being bridged to PC, and they are all cross platform play with Xbox Live. So we don’t really need a new console. If people want the better experience they can buy a PC and get the better experience at this point. They opened up that network and it was a really smart move on their behalf.
For what the Scorpio is going to offer I’m interested to see where the price point falls. The power they noted costs PC gamers $400 just for a card to barely support the same output. The current Xbox One is $350. If this unit is around $800 dollars, why not just get the PC? Perhaps this is Microsoft’s plan all along, to push people to PC. They profit from either side, so maybe it was a smart business move.
Overall, I’m not excited for Scorpio. I’m not excited for PS4 Neo. As a console owner this is not what we want. We don’t want console lifespans of maybe 4 years. I’m a person that finds it annoying when a perfectly good phone is “outdated” because a slightly better phone releases a year lately. I also find it extremely annoying when they say “nobody will be left out” because we will be. If we are not being left out then there is no purpose to the new units, so why bother having them?

Deadpool (Tim Miller)
As Hollywood struggles to reinvent their array of superheroes with each iteration, it’s no surprise that audiences would become hungry for something off the beaten path. While it’s not the first post-modern comic-book adaptation, Deadpool is billed as ushering in a new direction: a fan-spurred, self-aware tentpole that’s R-rated to its core, featuring a wise-ass character (don’t call him...

The first issue of this new Heroes Reborn mini-series was decent, without being much more. It is hard to be too critical of these Heroes mini-series, as I believe their heart is genuinely in the right place, but they do consistently underwhelm the reader, tantalising us with just enough to keep us reading but then fail to deliver. The first issue of Heroes: Godsend had all those same flaws, so I was hoping this issue would pick up the slack and prove me wrong.
Godsend is Farah Nazan, an American Muslim who has the ability to turn invisible, and who has been trained in the art of unarmed combat. She, in the anti-Muslim hatred following 9/11, used her abilities to help her local communities, to fight back against racist violence, but kept firmly out of sight.

WrestleMania 33 is officially set for April 2 2017 in Orlando, Florida.
The news had been expected for some time, with Orlando aggressively campaigning for the event and WWE impressed by the improvements made to the 74,000 capacity Citrus Bowl.
Numerous big cities had bid for the event, due to the economic impact WrestleMania has on the local area. In the end, only Minneapolis came close. Orlando was by far the safer bet, thanks to its well-established transport hubs and vast accommodation options. Indeed, ‘Mania was there in 2008 so WWE know full well what they are getting with the location.
For the fans, it should be a lot of fun. The Sunshine State is famed for its tourist attractions and theme parks, meaning the ‘Mania 33 experience is going to feel more like a vacation. Another exciting factor is that coinciding with the event will reportedly be the launch of the new WWE...

An 11% Top Ten drop from the same weekend last year can be blamed mainly on the shortfall of this week's sole new release, Ron Howard's whaling saga "In the Heart of the Sea." Its $11 million gross is about half of what "Exodus - Gods and Kings" opened to in 2015. Take away those two films and grosses actually inched slightly higher than last year. The weekend was ho-hum, as several films jockeyed to stay on screen for the lucrative holiday weeks ahead. Next week any movie that is not "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" will battle for screen space. The Top Ten pre-Christmas weekend last year totaled about $124 million. Next weekend by most estimates should easily top $200 million, possible with "Star Wars" approaching (or even exceeding) that figure by itself. Many all-time top grossers —"Titanic," "Avatar," both the "Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" series —have opened around the same date and had less.

A whole new audience can discover that these real life stories are just as thrilling, entertaining, and incredible as the latest big-budget blockbuster. What’s more, they’re all true too. But with a new found glut of them comes the ever more impossible choice, what’s worth your time? Below is my pick of the 50 best modern feature length documentaries.
I’ve defined modern as being from 2000 onwards, which means some of the greatest documentaries ever made will not feature here. I’m looking at you Hoop Dreams.

Patchwork
Written by Tyler MacIntyre & Chris Lee Hill
Directed by Tyler MacIntyre
Canada/USA, 2015
Director Tyler MacIntyre’s film, Patchwork, is horror/comedy that puts a modern spin on the mythology established in Mary Shelley’s classic story, Frankenstein. At its core, Patchwork is an examination of life death in the modern age, mixed with violence, gore, and a cheeky tone sure to delight fans of classic 80’s scream-fests.
In Patchwork, Jennifer (Tory Stolper) is a young professional woman living in Los Angeles, and the embodiment of the fast-paced L.A. lifestyle: she hangs out in bottle service booths inside trendy nightspots, wears pantsuits, and dates a douchey guy that wears a Bluetooth headset while at a club (and he also cheats on his wife). There are two things we see straight away in A Bigger Splash: Tilda Swinton, naked and sunbathing, and her character Marianne then having sex in the pool with her boyfriend Paul (Matthias Schoenaerts). No words are spoken as we silently follow the pair from their villa to the beach and when the first notable sound is heard, a cellphone, it's an assault on the senses. This opening immediately sets the tone for this sexually-charged and sun-kissed movie, from Italian director Luca Guadagnino, that does not hide from both the raw ugliness and beauty of relationships so interwoven they can quickly shift from great to toxic. Tilda Swinton, who leads this unlikely foursome, is one of the greatest actresses we have working today. Take away her ability to speak – as they have done here in this film – and she only proves that all the more by conveying so very much whilst saying so very little.

Selena Gomez just released one of her hottest videos ever! The singer dropped her new music video for "Same Old Love" on Tuesday. In the sexy clip, the 23-year-old shows off her curves in a plunging black dress, her hair perfectly styled in big curls. The video opens up with Gomez getting into a car, and during her ride she sees several strangers dealing with various forms of happiness and heartache. After witnessing the effects of love, some good and some bad, Selena finally makes it to her concert where she stuns in the sexy black number and performs the catchy single. Check out Selena's "Same Old Love" video above! While we're loving the former Disney star's new song (and sultry video), we can't help but wonder if the track is about her ex, Justin Bieber. With lyrics like, "Take away your things and go/You can't take back what you said,...

Take away the gore in Peter Nicholson’s story of young hikers and you’d have an attractive promo for Dartmoor tourism
Peter Nicholson’s low-budget horror-thriller starts better than it ends. As two young hikers (Gemma-Leah Devereux, Rebecca Night) are led off the beaten track by a hunky guide (Callum Blue), the first act’s every set-up benefits from the screen-filling backdrops of the eponymous moors. It’s disappointing, then, that Nicholson should retreat from this spectacular stage to a farmhouse haunted by mysterious deaths; doubly so when the relationships, dialogue and action all stop ringing true. Redact the gore, and it’d make an attractive promo for Dartmoor tourism, but A Night in the Woods (2012) hounded its characters far more persuasively over this particular terrain.

The forgotten grandfather of the third-person cover shooter? Ryan takes a look back at the brilliant Cabal...
As far as military shooters went in the 1980s, Operation Wolf was the last word. It was loud, brash, and the cabinet had a colossal Uzi 9mm strapped to the front of it. The game was a distillation of the decade's cheerfully excessive action movies: traces of Rambo, Commando and Delta Force could all be found in its DNA.
It could even be argued that none-more-80s movie studio Cannon Films were indirectly responsible for Operation Wolf's visual style and "rescue the hostages" plotline.
The only problem with Operation Wolf is this: it isn't exactly what you'd call strategic. Take away the Uzi, the incredible sound effects and the phalanxes of hapless soldiers, and you're essentially left with Duck Hunt. You can't move around, you can't take cover and you can't avoid bullets...

"You gotta follow the white guys," director Ava DuVernay told a crowd of female bloggers (via The Hollywood Reporter) during her closing keynote address at the 2015 BlogHer Conference, offering up advice for women and minorities looking to make it in their industry. It was an interesting point for the Selma director to make. After all, the conversation has grown louder and louder when it comes to the discussion regarding women and people of color blazing their own trails and charting their own paths to the top in industries that have been primarily dominated by white males. But according to DuVernay there is an advantage to utilizing the roads paved by those already in positions of privilege and power. "They've got this thing wired. Too often, we live within their games, so why would you not study what worksc Take away the bad stuff -- because there's a lot -- and...

Ava DuVernay shared advice on how to get ahead in an industry in which she finds herself to be a minority. "You gotta follow the white guys. Truly. They’ve got this thing wired," she advised during her closing keynote at the 2015 BlogHer conference, held at the Hilton in New York City. “Too often, we live within their games, so why would you not study what works? Take away the bad stuff — because there’s a lot — and use the savvy interesting stuff and figure out how they can apply. It’s a good one for the ladies.” The Selma helmer continued to the ballroom of female

Channing Tatum’s ‘Magic Mike Xxl’ Outstrips ‘Terminator: Genisys’ but July 4 Box Office Could be Dud
Channing Tatum‘s “Magic Mike: Xxl” danced past Arnold Schwarzenegger and “Terminator: Genisys” in their first day at the box office Wednesday. But the numbers suggest they’ll have trouble lighting it up over the full July 4 weekend. Warner Bros.’ “Magic Mike Xxl” was No. 1 on Wednesday with $9.3 million, ahead of the $8.9 million that second-place “Terminator: Genisys” rolled up for Paramount and Skydance Productions. Those figures included their respective Tuesday night hauls of $2.4 million and $2.3 million, however, and that’s what put them ahead of heavyweight holdovers “Inside Out” and “Jurassic World.” Take away the Tuesday grosses and it’s.
