Liz Tigelaar is readying her next Hulu series.
The showrunner of Little Fires Everywhere and Tiny Beautiful Things is developing a limited series based on Lucy Foley’s best-seller, The Guest List, which Hulu won the rights to in what proved another wild bidding war. The news comes as the broader IP market has only grown frothier amid the dual Hollywood strikes, which ground production to a halt and left the industry with little else to sell.
The TV iteration, like Foley’s 2020 book, will be set on a remote island off a rugged coast, where guests attend an elaborate celebrity wedding. “But with a storm brewing, the picture-perfect affair darkens as the guests and their shared histories dangerously collide — and then the lights go out. And a body is found,” reads the project’s official logline. “As old secrets are brought to the surface, and the mysteries swirl — the question remains,...

Ke Huy Quan fought back tears and embraced the euphoria as he accepted the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his turn in Everything Everywhere All at Once on Sunday.
Quan began his speech in the most classic way, speaking directly to his mother: “My mom is 84 years old, and she’s at home watching,” he said. “Mom, I just won an Oscar!”
Quan went on to speak about his remarkable journey to acting in the first place, noting the year he spent in a refugee camp after his family fled Vietnam in 1978. “Somehow,...

The final stretch of the 2023 Oscar season has started with voters casting their ballots for the winners of the 95th annual Academy Awards. All season long, Gold Derby has been interviewing dozens of nominees, including three contenders for Best Supporting Actor. Click on each actor’s name below to watch each of these 20-minute interviews.
Brendan Gleeson, “The Banshees of Inisherin”
In “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Gleeson plays jaded folk musician Colm, who abruptly ends his life-long friendship with his drinking buddy Pádraic (Colin Farrell), and a shocking standoff ensues. The actor admits that he feels sympathetic to his character: “I feel very defense towards him, because I really do feel he was in the pits of despair. I have a theory about it. I think it’s just because people have had enough cynicism and the world is in enough trouble where we need optimism to get out of it rather than cynicism.

When “Everything Everywhere All At Once’s” visual effects artist Evan Halleck was working on the rock universe scene, he brought in cutting-edge artificial intelligence tools from Runway — such as the green screen tool that removes the background from images. “It was cutting things out better than my human eye was, and it gave me a clean mat that I could use for other things.”
From the rise of deepfake technology to AI being used to generate scripts, AI is on the rise. It’s faster, cheaper and Halleck says, on a film like the Oscar-nominated A24 film, “Rotoscoping, in my opinion, has been a very slow and painful process. So, it was nice to automate things.”
For the film’s rock scene, Halleck says, “We used a green screen tool. Pulleys pushed the rocks, gravel and sand forward. But when I was cutting those things out of the shot,...

"It's a crisis. But opportunities are born from crisis." Netflix has debuted the trailer for a documentary film titled Convergence: Courage in a Crisis, created by Academy Award-winning doc filmmaker Orlando von Einsiedel. Debuting on Netflix this October. While Covid-19 exacerbates vulnerabilities across the world, unsung heroes in all levels of society help the tide turn toward a brighter future. The film examines the pandemic-related crises occurring around the world and how communities are coming together to solve major problems and make a difference - from a Syrian refugee fighting the UK government to include hospital cleaners and porters in bereavement pay to a doctor committed to serving Miami's homeless community. "Activists and volunteers work through the darkest days of 2020, galvanizing social change amidst chaos as governments start to fail local communities. This epic, globally spanning and deeply passionate documentary serves as a clarion call that great change can be born of crisis.

Exclusive: Kate Atkinson’s best-selling and award-winning novel Life After Life is to be reimagined as a four-part BBC series, which will be made by Brexit: The Uncivil War producer House Productions.
House founders Tessa Ross and Juliette Howell have attached some eye-catching creatives to the project, including Outlaw King and Traitors writer Bash Doran, and John Crowley, the two-time BAFTA-winning director who helmed Saoirse Ronan starrer Brooklyn.
Life After Life tells the vivid story of the alternate lives of Ursula Todd, who dies one night in 1910, only to be born and survive on the same night. She finds herself time and again, living and dying in different circumstances only to be reborn into a new, alternative iteration of life once more. Her journey spans two World Wars and an encounter with Hitler.

Judging by the meager slate of new movies that Netflix is adding to its library this September, it seems like the streaming giant is saving all of its resources and energy for a go-for-broke awards season push; with all eyes on “Marriage Story,” “The Irishman,” and documentary heavyweights like “American Factory,” as well as Disney+ giving the company a world of new competition come November, this isn’t the time for Netflix to pull out all the stops. But that doesn’t mean subscribers will be completely out of new content to stream this month. “The Lord of the Rings” is nothing to sneeze at, even if Netflix is just replacing the first part of the trilogy with the last two. And the addition of Wong Kar-wai’s “The Grandmaster” will give millions of people new access to one of the most dazzling biopics of the 21st century, even if only in truncated form.

Orlando von Einsiedel has always been comfortable in dangerous situations. His Oscar-winning documentary “The White Helmets” took him into the heart of the Syrian Civil War, while his widely acclaimed “Virunga” forced him to dodge bullets in eastern Congo as he watched a small team of park rangers protect the last surviving mountain gorillas from poachers and armed militias. In that light, it’s rather jarring to see the British filmmaker so frightened in the opening moments of “Evelyn,” which is essentially a documentary about a stroll he took around the British countryside with his siblings and their parents. A few minutes later, as Orlando stares into the camera and explains the situation, it’s all too easy to appreciate the reason for his terror.
13 years ago, Orlando’s brother Evelyn committed suicide. He was barely 20 years old. His death wasn’t entirely unexpected — Evelyn was schizophrenic, and spent the...

It’s been over two years since director Marc Webb finished his four-year run of revamping The Amazing Spider-Man for Sony Pictures, and some may not be surprised he decided to return to smaller character-driven films like his directorial debut (500) Days of Summer.
Written by Tom Flynn, Gifted is a movie that’s bigger for its emotions than it is for the type of CG-driven action we saw in Webb’s Spider-Man movies, although it does star another superhero, Captain America’s Chris Evans, playing Frank, the uncle and guardian of a 7-year-old girl named Mary (Mckenna Grace). Frank has been home-schooling Mary in their Florida trailer park home, but when she’s finally sent to public school, her teacher (Jenny Slate) discovers the girl’s amazing math skills.
As word gets around about Mary’s ability to solve complex math equations, her grandmother Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan) wanting to claim custody for the girl,...

The movie industry has long since moved away from films that I think of as “somber yarns.” These are films that, while they likely have many happy moments, are generally sad and slow-moving, and aren’t exactly about anything. Last year’s Brooklyn is a good example, and I suspect that at least a small part of the reaction to that film is by way of its being, at this point, so out of the ordinary.
Mr. Church is such a film as well, and Bruce Beresford (Tender Mercies, Driving Miss Daisy, Evelyn) is a director who has just the right history to know how to meander through a young woman’s walk down memory lane.
Charlotte, who goes by Charlie (Britt Robertson – Tomorrowland, Mother’s Day), narrates our way through a story that started when she was 10, in the early 70s. She woke up one day to find Mr. Church...

For this week’s spotlight piece, I wanted to take a go a bit old school and take a look at an A-lister who’s been around for a while now…Pierce Brosnan. A very charming actor, he went from being well known and well liked on television to a mega star when he became one of the notable few ever to essay the role of secret agent 007 in the James Bond franchise. Brosnan has also been one of the more successful post Bond actors, doing his best not to be defined by the iconic role. As such, he’s retained that A-list status and is well deserving of today’s spotlight piece. Here we go! Brosnan had his beginnings on television, in made for TV movies and bit parts, before he became a known commodity with his series Remington Steele. That show made him a small screen star (and...

Oh, the curse of being an attractive film star! Nobody takes you seriously. Those poor, pretty people! Enough with the bitter sarcasm, I know, but there’s more than a bit of truth in it, especially for actresses. Often Oscar has rewarded them for “glamming-down”! Charlize Theron gained weight, wore fake choppers, and endured hours in the make-up chair for Monster and took home the gold as did Nicole Kidman when she donned a phony “schnozzola” in The Hours. And there’s reward in tackling a role from the down-trodden classes as Halle Berry did in Monster’S Ball. Of course, this is not exclusive actress strategy. Vacant Domicile: Shepard’s Latest Hides Absence of Narrative Behind Titular Character
As foul mouthed and over-the-top as it sometimes tends to be, Richard Sheperd’s latest, Dom Hemingway falls a bit short absurd glory, considering the balls out bravado it promises prior to the opening credits. While it features perhaps one of the best performances of Jude Law’s career, its raunchy energy fizzles out by the mid-point as it switches gears from uneasy gangster flick to family dramedy. That’s not say it isn’t without merit, as even though the plot can’t get it together, Shepherd’s got a knack for engaging dialogue and entertaining characterization, something the film tends to bank on a bit too broadly.
Loud, onerous and with a tendency to spew curse word laden diatribes like an acolyte of Tom Hardy’s Bronson character, Dom Hemingway (Law) has just been released from...

The Olympics are over and scripted TV is back, which means juicy quotes from shows like "The Blacklist" and "Scandal," which have taken a backseat to all the winter sports we've been watching for the past month. Read on for more of TV's best lines from the week of Feb. 23 to March 1:
'Broad City'
Ilana, after looking at the Facebook profile of the guy who just friended Abbi: "He likes 'Roseanne'?! This -- this is your next sexual partner."
'Hannibal'
Hannibal: "I never feel guilty about eating anything."
Hannibal: "It's rare that I cook a meatless meal."
Will, to Hannibal: "I'm going to remember, and when I do, there will be a reckoning."
'Shameless'
Fiona, after telling Lip she doesn't want to accept a plea deal after their baby brother ingested her cocaine: "I can't go back to jail."
Lip: "Of course this is all about you.

London, April 24: Irish actor-producer Pierce Brosnan is happy producing rather than directing projects.
The actor was back on the big screen last week with his romance movie "Love Is All You Need". He admitted that he has never had a burning ambition to direct.
Brosnan has produced and worked in movies like "The Matador" and "Evelyn" and he said that it is a process that he enjoys.
Talking about direction plans, Brosnan said he thought about it, but "I've never really got around to doing it". "The want has never been that burning," femalefirst.co.uk quoted him as saying.
"I enjoy producing. It gives you.

71-year-old Mary Beth Peil is stealing scenes for her work on CBS’ The Good Wife. Over at The Daily Beast, you can read my latest feature, "The Good Wife's Bad Mother," in which I talk to the former opera singer and Dawson’s Creek star about playing Jackie Florrick. While The Good Wife’s title refers, rather cheekily, to Julianna Margulies’ Alicia Florrick—who found herself embroiled in a political and sexual scandal at the start of the series’ run—the show explores both individuals’ and society’s definitions and expectations of wives, mothers, and career women. Margulies’ Alicia juggles work, children, and romance, often without much regard for her own well being, perhaps outside of a solitary glass of red wine at the end of a day in court. Yet Alicia’s outlook, behavior, and mores are constantly commented on or outwardly attacked by her mother-in-law Jackie Florrick,...

Hello, everyone—
I’m sorry for the delay in writing, but here I am, finally.
Before talking about this star-studded event, I—like an award winner (which is what I felt like)—need to give some thanks. First, to Db for helping to arrange this. Second, to Comedy Central for giving Red Carpet and Press Room access to a blogger—and to the very pleasant Chris, who handed me my treasured credentials. Third to…well, as always, to Stephen and staff, for consistently creating something worth writing about and getting excited about. There are not many people in this world that can make you laugh hysterically and think seriously at the same time—and then do it over and over again, four nights a week, many weeks a year, seven years and counting.
I have to admit I felt pretty nervous before going, and unsure of what the situation would be.

If I could get dime every time Bruce Beresford's name was attached to a project, I'd have made at least a buck in the last decade. André Fleuren, Bereford's Dp on Evelyn, has also boarded the project.

As the trailer suggests [cough], the film takes place in the 19th century in the USA. Jonah Hex (Josh Brolin) escaped from death, had been scarred and lost his family because of a scum named Quentin Turnbull (John Malkovich). After that incident, Hex has become a legend in the USA's West and has had a price on his head for a while. However, after the American army had located Jonah, they propose him a deal he can't refuse: in exchange for the freedom on the warrant on his head, Jonah Hex must stop Quentin Turnbull, who is gathering an army and who...

A few weeks ago I peeled open my rib cage to reveal my raw, beating heart and the sound of that heart was (to the tune of “thump-thump, thump-thump”) : Fright-night, Fright-night, Fright….
Yeah, I worship writer/director Tom Holland’s 1985 vampire gem and I fly that fanged flag with pride.
But outside of the ace performances from Chris Sarandon, William Ragsdale and Roddy McDowell, outside of Holland’s sharp, affectionate script and tense – yet playful – direction and outside of Richard Edlund’s gorgeous special effects, one of the major hooks that Fright Night jabbed into me was the soundtrack, a sexy, atmospheric synth score by Brad Fiedel and a motley collection of 80’s pop and metal tunes that fit the material perfectly, almost as if they were written specifically for the action on screen.
Well, it turns out for the most part, they were.

Pierce Brosnan just wrapped filming for “Remember Me” with Robert Pattinson, but it looks like the Irish actor won’t be taking a break from the movie set anytime soon. Brosnan signed on for the starring role in “The Hunter,” a film written and directed by fellow actor Stanley Tucci and produced by Brosnan’s company Irish DreamTime. In this “coming-of-age” story set in New York’s wealthy Westchester County, the Irish James Bond will play a middle-aged man who desperately clings to his once-charmed life as it starts to slip away. The comedy/drama will also star Hollywood actresses Julianne Moore and Patricia Clarkson. Pre-production for “The Hunter” will begin in September. Brosnan’s production company, Irish DreamTime, has previously released films “Evelyn” and “Laws of Attraction” starring both Brosnan and Moore. ...

Brosnan To Sing With Streep In Mamma Mia!
Former James Bond star Pierce Brosnan will be showing off his singing skills when he teams up with Meryl Streep for the big screen adaptation of hit musical Mamma Mia! Brosnan sang a few Irish standards in the independent film Evelyn and also crooned onstage early in his career. But now The Thomas Crown Affair star will play Sam, one of the three men summoned to a Greek island by a young woman who believes one of them is her father, in the new film. Brosnan claims the opportunity to sing Abba standards such as S.O.S. - a duet with Streep - was irresistible. He explains, "I said yes right away because it meant working with Meryl Streep. "Secondly, I saw the show with my family in London, and found it just so wonderfully happy and joyful, and so pitched in time forever in the 1970s. "What a kick in the pants to be able to go off and spend some time with Meryl on some Greek island, singing Abba songs!" Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson will serve as producers of the film project, along with former Abba members Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus.

NL catches Brosnan for 'Sunset' sail
Pierce Brosnan, used to catching criminals in his role as James Bond, will try his luck as a thief in New Line Cinema's After the Sunset. Brosnan is attached to star in the film, which was penned by Paul Zbyszewski and is being produced by Firm Films. Sunset begins where most heist movies end, with a master thief (Brosnan) sailing off to an island paradise after his last big score. However, when his lifelong nemesis, an FBI agent, shows up to make sure the thief is really retired, a new cat-and-mouse game of friendship, suspicion and thievery begins. Firm Films' Beau Flynn is producing Sunset, and Tripp Vinson is executive producing. Chris Pollack is associate producing. New Line execs Kent Alterman and Keith Goldberg are overseeing for the studio. Best known for his portrayal of Bond in the past four installments of the secret agent franchise, Brosnan also has appeared in such films as Evelyn, The Tailor of Panama and The Thomas Crown Affair. He is attached to star in the upcoming indie feature Laws of Attraction. Brosnan is repped by CAA.
