The title caused press turmoil due to sounding pejorative. "Different" titles are actually part of Silvio Santos's strategy to attract media attention to his SBT productions, which had been the case of Chiquititas Brasil (1997). Like the original Castilian title "chiquititas" ("little girls") was kept, "pícara" is a Spanish word for "rogue" or "rascal" in Mexico.
Other titles considered were "A Smart Dreamer" and "Artful Dreamer".
Flávia Monteiro and Patrícia de Sabrit auditioned for the main role which went to Bianca Rinaldi. Monteiro and Rinaldi had both been part of Chiquititas Brasil (1997).
The word "pícara" is a Spanish word for "rogue" or "rascal" in Mexico. Another similar word is "travesa". Bianca Rinaldi's next starring role was Pequena Travessa (2002), another Mexican telenovela remake.
