Earlier this summer, filmmakers Mark and Jay Duplass, alongside Seed&Spark, the film-focused crowdfunding platform with built-in distribution, announced a brand new initiative designed to find and bolster new filmmaking talent all over the country. Their Hometown Heroes partnership was designed to challenge “filmmakers from all over the country to tell stories that have never been told from wherever they are,” including a large-scale call for crowdfunding campaigns for narrative feature films on the Seed&Spark platform.
Submissions opened for the initiative in August and the rally launched on September 12, when the 73 participating films began their crowdfunding campaigns. All campaigns closed on October 13. More than $860,000 was raised across all rally projects, who also amassed a total of 63,000 followers in the 30-day period.

Even though the worlds of film and TV are converging more than ever before, it’s interesting to note just how many of the people behind the biggest films of the year have tried their hand at TV work in the past.
“Get Out” director Jordan Peele never officially directed an episode of his long-running Comedy Central sketch show “Key & Peele,” but his debut film currently sits at No. 7 on the year’s domestic box office list. Go up and down the rest of that chart and you’ll find movies from directors who’ve made valuable contributions to TV comedies and dramas alike.
Most of these episodes were pilots or season premieres, ways for directors to help establish a template or shorthand for what governs life in front of and behind the camera for the duration of these series. While some of these filmmakers took multiple opportunities in the TV director’s seat,...

It’s been nearly 50 years since former Green Beret surgeon Jeffrey MacDonald’s wife and two daughters were brutally murdered at their Fort Bragg, North Carolina, home.
MacDonald claimed that on that 1970 night, four intruders killed his wife, Colette, 26, and daughters Kimberley, 5, and Kristen, 2. But MacDonald was convicted of the murders.
He has maintained his innocence, and on January 26, an appeals court in Richmond, Virginia, will hear oral arguments on his “actual innocence” claim, a legal term that sets a high bar for exonerations.
The case is the focus of the upcoming People Magazine Investigates episode “The Accused,” which airs Monday night at 10 p.

Chicago – When comedian/writer/director Mike Birbiglia is in his element, as during the interviews he conducted at The iO Theater in Chicago, he is relaxed and ardently philosophical. He has written and directed a new film, “Don’t Think Twice,” which is about a improvisation comedy troupe, but it’s also about life.
“Don’t Think Twice” – besides being a clever play on the famous Bob Dylan song title – is essentially about the stages of life, and how we react to our own ambitions. The members of the comedy troupe – portrayed by (clockwise in the picture below, starting top left) Mike Birbiglia, Kate Miccuci, Chris Gethard, Gillian Jacobs, Keegan-Michael Key and Tami Sagner – are at a crossroads in their professional and personal lives, and have to deal with the sudden uptick of fame to one of their members. As Birbiglia did with his first feature, ‘Sleepwalk with Me,’ he...

Buffy, Doctor Who, Star Trek and more have all devoted episodes to members of their supporting cast...
Over an extended run, some television shows give off the impression that all life in their universe revolves around a small number of characters, but if they run long enough, writers and producers will invariably have to look elsewhere every once in a whle. Maybe on another day to every other episode, when the forces of evil rally and all seems lost, the good guys are... otherwise occupied, leaving someone else to pick up the slack.
As a dramatic convention in pop culture, foregrounding minor characters dates at least as far back as Tom Stoppard's 1966 play Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead, which takes place “in the wings” of Shakespeare's Hamlet as the two minor characters have little comprehension of the tragic events going on concurrently. But over the years, geek...

Scream Queens delivers a cruel and ultimately disappointing season 1 finale, but that doesn't take away from its highlights...
This review contains spoilers.
1.12 Dorkus & The Final Girl(s)
It's hard to come to terms with how disappointing and infuriating Scream Queens' ending is. There are different ways a finale can let down its viewers and fans but Dorkus/The Final Girl(s) almost breaks new ground in this sense. I'd go so far as to say that Scream Queens has put Lost to shame. It doesn't so much fail to stick the landing but miss the landing entirely and break every bone in its body.
Back in July, Ryan Murphy said, "... at the end of the first season there will only be four characters out of twenty-five left" and yet ten remain. The thirteen-episode run has always seemingly been building up to a bloodbath, with Murphy effectively...

The saying that ‘TV is the new film’ hits close to home for Mr Robot creator and showrunner Sam Esmail.
Esmail recounted how he first thought of the project as a film, before turning it into the USA Network’s summer hit.
The story follows paranoid young man Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek) who works as an engineer at a cybersecurity company. Christian Slater plays an anarchist hacker-activist named Mr Robot.
“As far as I’m concerned we are making the movie version, it just happens to be on streaming and television,” Esmail responded to Screen at a Zurich Film Festival press conference.
“I don’t see the difference. Films are two hours long, and TV shows can go on for 20 or 30 hours or more, that affects your storytelling. But if [either format] is right for your story, I don’t see any difference.
“I originally intended [Mr Robot] to be a film, I’m not shooting it any differently. We’re executing...

As much as the whole idea sounds like an oxymoron, it appears Paramount's plans for a 'brain trust' of writers to steer the "Transformers" franchise has come to fruition.
Not long ago came word that Paramount intends to expand their mega-selling "Transformers" series with not just further direct sequels but interconnected spin-offs as well.
To do this, the likes of Michael Bay, Steven Spielberg and Lorenzo di Bonaventura would lend their support to a team of writers who would come up with story ideas for that film series. Said team would be lead by producer/writer Akiva Goldsman.
Today comes word on who will be a part of that team with five names you'll probably be familiar with - "The Walking Dead" creator Robert Kirkman, "Pacific Rim" and "The Incredible Hulk" scribe Zak Penn," "Fringe" and "Lost" writer/exec producer Jeff Pinker, and "Iron Man" scribes Art Marcum and Matt Holloway...

On this episode of Nashville, "I'm Lost Between Right and Wrong," Scarlett tries to keep Deacon's spirits up and gets a new love interest in the process. Rayna fights to nullify Maddie's Edgehill contract. Avery finds out Sadie's secret. Will, Luke and Gunnar hit the town for a boys' night. Teddy must face the consequences of his actions.
So Teddy folded and signed Maddie over to Jeff and Edgehill. This guy has absolutely no testicles whatsoever. If he does have anything dangling, Rayna's is sure to lay into him with such fury that they'll retreat upwards. Mama bear received a diamond necklace and note from Fordham sent to his new "star" via the Highway 65 office. I nice little F-u from Jeff to Rayna, I'm sure.

Hey, remember when Proudlock was the man who loved life? Every time we turned on Made in Chelsea, we'd see his happy face proclaiming another glorious day. Not now. It's all grim in the Lost Bois' camp... but it made this week's episode pretty thrilling, to be fair.
As if all that drama wasn't enough, there was a misjudged phone call, an awkward date and even accusations of black magic. Seriously. Read on for our 23 best bits from the episode...
1. The bit when... Jamie cracked on to Lucy and it was weird.
Jamie explained that he'd just been rowing with Spenny because he wanted to get fit. And then, inexplicably, he looked at Lucy and practically winked as he slithered: "I know you think I look fit and healthy." Lucy's reaction was... lukewarm.
Luckily, Andy stepped in to point out that Jamie and Lucy had only just got back...

Over the past few months, artist Travis Falligant has delighted fans of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! with tribute art showing the Great Dane and his gang with horror icons, and he recently launched an Indiegogo campaign to get those memorable moments printed in an art book. In his latest batch of vintage images, Travis pits the young sleuths against more horror characters, including Sam from Trick ’r Treat.
Travis Falligant has teamed up with Bloody Disgusting and Indiegogo with his recently launched “Lost Mysteries” art book. The fundraising goal is $25,000. If that amount is reached, Travis’ well-received twists on the vintage cartoon classic will be collected and published in a hardcover, full-color, 6″ by 9″ book, complete with new horror-themed adventures that would mix the Mystery Machine riders with characters from Carrie, The Lost Boys, The Shining, and more.

Well, this week's Made in Chelsea was jolly good. It seems it's all going down in the streets of SW3 - there were drama explosions all over the place. Even Mark-Francis and Victoria had a scene that actually had a point! Read on for our 24 favourite moments, from Alik and Louise's nightmare to everyone being mean to Jamie to, well, all the rest of it...
1. The bit when... Binky had work-out glow from seeing WIll.
"It was glorious," she gushed to Alik and Louise. "I'm so turned on." Now, we're not sure that's really daytime drinks conversation, but we did enjoy it. And so did Louise, who couldn't resist bursting into a chorus of "Binky and Will Sitting In A Tree". Bless.
2. The bit when... Alik said "love ya" to Louise when he left.
"Love ya, later!" Binky couldn't help but gasp, and even Louise was cringing, which is not exactly a good sign.

What would you do if someone told you it was up to you to finish some old songs Bob Dylan had lying around?
That's the question facing Marcus Mumford, Elvis Costello, Jim James (of My Morning Jacket), Taylor Goldsmith and Rhiannon Giddens (of the Carolina Chocolate Drops) in Showtime's new original documentary, Lost Songs: The Basement Tapes Continued, which documents the making of the new album Lost On the River: The New Basement Tapes.

If you've ever noticed, Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons sings an awful lot about hearts and hands and the like. But this new heart-hand-touch-you song? Not even entirely his. It's Bob Dylan's, from off of "Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes," new tunes based off of newly uncovered Dylan lyrics. This little tune stays little, for a soothing effect, never curling into a payoff but loping around the fantastic wanderer that is the lyric video. The whole handwritten thing is also a scheme of the Jim James-led song "Nothing to It" and Elvis Costello-sung "Married to My Hack," all three below. "Lost on the River" is out on Nov. 11, and gathers the collective talents of Mumford, James, Costello, producer T Bone Burnett, Dawes, Rhiannon Giddens and more. "Lost Songs: The Basement Tapes Continued" is a Showtime documentary focused on the album's creation and is directed...

Bob Dylan has written more songs than even he could ever record. After discovering nearly two dozen never-recorded lyrics written by Dylan during his exceptionally prolific "Basement Tapes" period in the late '60s, award-winning producer T-Bone Burnett has put together an all-star band to marry the lyrics to new music. The band includes Mumford and Sons' Marcus Mumford, My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James, Elvis Costello, Dawes, Carolina Chocolate Drops’ Rhiannon Giddens, and more. The result is the upcoming tribute album "Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes," and you can hear a taste of it below, with the animated lyric video for the Costello-led "Married to My Hack." Watch the video here: And take a listen to "Nothing to It," with James on lead vocals, here. The upcoming Showtime documentary "Lost Songs: The Basement Tapes Continued" will peek behind the scenes at the album's creation, and will...

What makes a good series finale? Three events this week bring this question into focus: Sunday's "True Blood" series ender, Monday's celebration of the departed "Breaking Bad" at the Emmys, and Wednesday's Vox interview with David Chase, where the "Sopranos" creator finally offered an answer to the question of whether Tony died at the end of the notorious blackout finale of the 1999-2007 series.
All three of these finales, plus others of shows that went off the air this year ("Dexter," "How I Met Your Mother") drew both kudos and complaints. Some fans found these finales satisfying and others found them cheap copouts. It almost makes you sorry for the writers, who seem bound to disappoint some faction of fans, no matter how they choose to wrap things up.

UK industry representatives arrive in Sarajevo as part of CineLink Partner Country initiative
Sarajevo’s CineLink Partner Country Initiative has been running for more than a decade, systematically strengthening the working relationship between the Southeast European film industry and its international counterparts.
This year’s Partner Country is the UK, and a delegation of around 20 British producers, sales agents, distributors, agents and festival representatives will be present at CineLink for four intensive days of meeting regional film makers and promoting the possibilities of cooperation with the UK.
As an introduction for the producers from Southeast Europe attending the festival, Isabel Davis, the head of international film fund at the BFI, held a presentation of its recently established minority co-production fund.
“The UK has had a good, long-standing relationship with this festival and this region, and it felt very timely to come here as a partner country,” Davis said.

If ever Under the Dome needed to totally bring it, it was this week. You don't just end on a Lost-style hatch shot without having something big in store. And there was something big — for Uncle Sam, at least. Everyone else, and the overall mythology of the series? Still on hold. I'll give Under the Dome this: It doesn't make us wait for the trip into Chester's Mill's personal Carcosa. Down the locker-hatch we go, into the center of … the high-school basement. Boooooo!! Alright, I take it back. I can't be booing this early. We'll see what happens. Inside the haunted high-school basement. (I mean, it better be haunted.)But first, a check-in at the Sweetbriar Rose. Apparently Barbie did take the sheriff gig last week? Didn't seem like it — at all — but we'll go with it. (Monarch + sheriff = No. 1 power couple on Forbes'...

It wasn’t exactly easy for genre television in 2005. Well, it’s really never been easy for genre television ever in the history of television, but in 2005, a deluge of genre shows premiered and almost all of them had fallen prey to the swift axe of the television gods by the next year. Start by thinking about television now. It’s a fruitful time for horror and science fiction and fantasy. There are a multitude of genre shows, running the gamut from The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, to True Blood and The Vampire Diaries. They’re all massive hits.
Now, think of all of the shows that premiered around that time in 2005. There was Surface, and that was cancelled after ten episodes by NBC. Invasion, a well-regarded show written by Shaun Cassidy (who created one of my favorite shows, American Gothic) and that was cancelled...

The relevant recommendation for Fox‘s new series, Gang Related, may begin and end with the knowledge that it is created/written by Chris Morgan. If the writing abilities that brought you the last five Fast & Furious films, Wanted, and 47 Ronin has left you impressed, you’re all set. Lock in to your new favorite show now.
If that fact alone doesn’t mean much to you, the show obligingly lays all its cards on the table in the first fifteen minutes of the pilot. You only have to invest that amount of time to know exactly what’s coming your way, I imagine for the entirety of the show’s run, but at least for the first few episodes. The show, and you have to give it some credit really, puts it out there and says, “Look, you’re in, or you’re out.”

While TV shows nowadays tend to concentrate on building complex mythologies, what's wrong with the odd one-off monster?
There was a time when the Monster of the Week was the standard format for genre television. There might be some character development across the series, but from week to week each plot stood alone and the audience didn’t need to have seen the previous week’s episode to understand a new story. There were exceptions and special cases of course. Classic Doctor Who was serialised, and some shows like The Prisoner, while largely following a distinct narrative each week, also incorporated ongoing plot progression, an ongoing story arc. But for the most part, you could tune in to a show a month after you last saw it and still know what was going on.

2013 has been a great year for TV. Because a movie and/or TV show in a catalog at a studio is now something to be licensed, rebranded and repackaged and resold, a romantic classic and cult series are getting fresh life on the small screen. First up, 1990 romance classic "Ghost" starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore is going to become a weekly thing. Paramount is putting a show into development with Akiva Goldsman ("Winter's Tale," "I Am Legend") and Jeff Pinker ("Fringe," "Lost") teaming up on a pilot script that will find some way to serialize the story of a ghost who teams with a psychic to connect with his living wife. Maybe it'll be told through the eyes of the psychic who was an adventure with romantic ghosts each week? Who knows... But maybe pottery will become popular again? Meanwhile, omnipresent producers Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci are behind a reboot of "Tales From The Darkside,...

Paramount is developing a Ghost TV show — as in the movie Ghost — with a pilot co-written by Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinker, the studio announced today. There's no info yet on a timeline for when this show would air, but those are some big guns working on the pilot: Goldsman won an Oscar for his screenplay for A Beautiful Mind, Pinker has been a writer and producer on Alias and Lost, among other things, and the two previously collaborated on Fringe. Twenty-seven seasons into Survivor, it’s hard to believe any contestant can get away with being the “manipulative” one. At this point it’s an embarrassing, outdated word for gameplay on reality TV, the kind of whodunnit connivery you associate with Richard Hatch or Project Runway‘s Wendy Pepper – self-fancied Iagos ginning up the green-eyed monster in otherwise rational competitors. Which is why it’s insane that any Survivor veteran in 2013 — let alone the veterans who’ve been invited back to play — can be so naive as to allow a blatant manipulator like Vytas plow through their preordained plan of attack with almost no pushback. Vytas is not just manipulative. He is hauntingly stalwart in his plan to undermine his female teammates with “vulnerability.” “We’re eliminating you!” his teammates tell him. He blinks once and responds, “Oh. Right. You are. Thank you for telling me. Thank you. But… you won’t.
