According to John McLaughlin, when Cheers aired its pilot, it was ranked the 77th watched show out of 77 shows. By the 199th episode, it was the most watched comedy sitcom on television.
Depending on the length of an episode, the theme song during the opening credits may sometimes be truncated to just the chorus. This episode opens with the longer version. It also features a full length version of the song, including three verses and a sax solo, at the end (of the second half, when it's cut into two half hour episodes).
John McLaughlin closes the show by expressing his wish that Cheers (1982) would last to its 400th episode, a suggestion which elicits a wry chuckle from Kirstie Alley. In reality, the show was almost three-quarters of the way through its run. It would continue for only 75 episodes beyond its 200th, of which just 72 episodes were first aired after this special.
