Southern Ontario was experiencing one of the warmest winters in recent history, forcing the filmmakers to truck in blocks ice from Quebec to make snow.
Of the three main characters who did the most figure skating (Erin, Katie and Otto), only Brittany Bristow as Erin had any significant experience and skill on the ice. In Erin's final competitive scenes, a double was used, but otherwise she did most of the skating. Doubles did almost all the skating for the other two characters.
Despite being one of the rare Canadian movies to get a wide theatrical release in Canada, the movie was a big box office failure. The Canadian distributor (Alliance-Atlantis) was later blamed for not giving it a substantial-enough marketing campaign.
