Director Ryan Rossell auditioned over two hundred girls for the lead role of Ashley. Jennifer Marlowe was the only one he felt could portray the character.
During filming under the Brooklyn Bridge for the "mugging" scene Ryan Rossell was told they'd only have until 10pm to shoot guns under the bridge. They only got a few takes done before 10pm and wanted to shoot more. A production assistant told Rossell that if they continued shooting he'd be arrested by the police who were on set monitoring the gunshots. "Fine. Have them arrest me. And while I'm in the car going to jail continue to shoot more gunshots." The police were told Rossell was willing to be arrested and they balked, giving him another hour to shoot more gunshots.
On the day of the big "piranha" scene Ryan Rossell told a production assistant to go pick up the fish from a local pet store. When the PA returned the piranha he brought back were the size a thumb. Panicked, Rossell called around to every pet store in the area before "Angeles R' Us" pet store saved the day. They also ended up using their pet store for the pet store scene with Blues Clues Donovan Patton.
A test audience was shown the movie with another additional half-hour added on to the ending where Detective Lane and Ashley form a relationship and he ends up finding out about Trevor. None of them liked it and agreed it should end where it ends now.
