The best R-rated animated comedies are also some of the best cartoon movies period. Today, both children and adults are well-versed in the style and tone of PG-rated animation, as many contemporary cartoon movies have become at par with live-action films in terms of storytelling. This, however, has stolen the spotlight from R-rated comedic cartoons. It's a pity because the lack of restrictions afforded by an R-rating allows these cartoons to further push the boundaries of the medium - in ways that animated comedies permissible for children cannot.
Indeed, between puppet-oriented dramedies, Adult Swim movies about anthropomorphic fast food, and a profanity-filled musical, R-rated animated movies almost prove that adults are more immature than kids. Moreover, from the unapologetic vulgarity of movies like Heavy Metal and Sausage Party, the philosophical inquiries of Mind Game, to the political hard sci-fi of A Scanner Darkly, the best R-rated comedies have come a long way.

Sydney-based Odin’s Eye Animation has secured sales of kids’ TV series “The Beachbuds” to Disney Japan and ABC Australia. Other territories are under negotiation at the MipTV market in Cannes.
“The Beachbuds” is a 52-episode x 11’ animated series set in Zoobak Resort, a fictional tropical island paradise with the funniest feathered friends. With a target demographic of 6 to 11-year-olds “The Beachbuds” teaches kids about harmony, hospitality and humor, so no matter what happens everyone can have their best day ever.
The series is produced by J-Toon Productions, a U.S. and Indonesian firm, established in 2013 by industrialist and minerals magnate Jimmy Budiarto, and Montreal-based producer-distributor Syon Media. The producers previously negotiated a license deal for Southeast Asia, where the series is now available on Disney Plus Hotstar.
The series is directed by George Samilski with writers including Primetime Emmy-winner Steven Banks, Ken Goin and John R. Morey (“Family Guy”).

Making the jump from flash game to console game is a move that is usually reserved for only the best of the best. The latest flash distraction to graduate to retail is Shifting World, the newest entry into the Shift series, games that have been around on flash, iOS, and Psn platforms since 2008. Originally developed by Antony Lavelle and published by Armor Games, Aksys Games is helping to bring the updated Shifting World to store shelves.
Shifting World has a bit more of a story injected to it than it's predecessors, in that it goes out of its way to introduce a main character, and an antagonist, along with a couple other non-playable characters that play their roles. After receiving a mysterious invite, the unnamed protagonist (as he is named in the instruction manual) enters a house, which leads to an entirely black and white alternate dimension. In this mysterious...

In the 1985-86 season of Saturday Night Live, comedian Terry Sweeney made history by becoming the first (and still the only) openly gay cast member of the landmark late-night comedy show.
But the achievement was more notable even than that: Sweeney was also the first out actor with a regular role on broadcast television ever.
And what did he get for his bravery? Despite the fact that Sweeney had performed one of SNL's bonafide break-out characters (a parody of a particularly vapid Nancy Reagan), he was unceremoniously fired, along with most of the rest of a cast that also included Robert Downey, Jr., Joan Cusack, and Randy Quaid, at the end of a season that was widely regarded as a failure.
As an out gay actor at the height of the AIDS crisis, Sweeney didn't work again for ten years.
But Sweeney was a survivor, eventually finding work as his first love,...

Sci Fi sets Thursday sked
The Sci Fi Channel will launch a new night of original programming on Thursdays, network officials said at the Television Critics Assn. press tour Wednesday. Beginning March 4, a two-hour block will sandwich returning series Scare Tactics between the rookie reality program Mad Mad House and new cartoon Tripping the Rift. Sci Fi currently utilizes Friday as its exclusive outpost for original series, anchored by the veteran show Stargate SG-1. "It will be a bit edgier, far less traditional and targeted at a younger crowd," Sci Fi president Bonnie Hammer said. Sci Fi also said Wednesday that it will begin production in New Zealand on Earthsea, a four-hour miniseries scheduled to air in December from Hallmark Entertainment in association with Bender-Brown Prods.
