A hastily assembled response to the box office success of MGM's That's Entertainment! (1974) by the 20th Century-Fox television division, this 90-minute special was aired in syndication in October of 1974 and has rarely been seen since.
Oddly, while this special included excerpts from four decades of Fox musicals, the producers neglected to include footage from five of its heavy-hitters, the Rodgers and Hammerstein blockbusters Oklahoma! (1955), Carousel (1956), The King and I (1956), South Pacific (1958) and the 1962 remake of State Fair (1962). Fox owned the rights to all of these in part, and footage from The Sound of Music (1965) was utilized, which indicates this was not a rights issue with the Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization.
