"All You Need is Lunch" is a new film reviewing the career of "The Rutles," and their music that will last a lunchtime.
Having loved the first Rutles documentary and its meticulous recreation of another famous band the Rutles were spoofing (and buying their hilarious albums with music by Neil Innes) I was geared up to watch the sequel.
And I thought it, too, was hilarious. For about twelve and a half minutes. Then I realized Eric Idle was doing a cheapjack rehash of his original "mockumentary."
Sure, they had some new shots not included in the original and a few new faces added to the roster of people influenced by the Rutles (Tom Hanks? Princess Leia? A smug-looking Robin Williams doing a German accent?) and the language could be more crass. But, for the most part, Idle had no great new ideas or explosive exposes about the Rutles' lives or career.
Idle might as well hang it up. He's repeating himself. The only difference between the last one and this one is, he looks a quarter of a century older. He probably did it to travel to exotic locales on someone else's dime.
Don't waste your time and money unless you want to see "All You Need is Cash" done worse. Ho-hum.
