The Farrelly brothers have had a long career both collaborating and helming projects individually. They’re coming together again for the holidays with the new Paramount+ film “Dear Santa,” a naughty but sweet Christmas confection starring Jack Black as Satan, who is accidentally summoned by a boy named Liam (Robert Timothy Smith) who can’t spell when writing a letter to Kris Kringle.
Peter and Bobby Farrelly spoke with Variety about their favorite Christmas movies, the power of underdog stories, and which of their movies would be worth revisiting.
Where did the idea for “Dear Santa” come from?
Peter: Pete Jones and Kevin Barnett, who we work with a lot, brought us the idea and they said, “A kid’s writing a letter to Santa, but he misspells it and instead writes it to Satan.” We’re like, “We’ll buy that. Ok, let’s do it.” It was like...

In “The Wizard of Oz,” Dorothy (Judy Garland) just needs to click her heels three times to be transported from the dreamland of Oz. But right from the opening shot of “Wicked,” director Jon M. Chu’s sweeping camera — flying up from the sea to the cliffs, over miles of landscape, past the flying monkeys — grounds his Oz in a tangible place.
“If you’re going to believe characters that exist there that have real stakes, then you have to believe that this place exists,” said Chu while he was a guest on IndieWire’s Toolkit podcast. “What I realized is in [‘Wicked’ the Broadway] show, you walk into a theater, and you are in Oz, it’s decorated that way, and the bubble comes down [with Glinda], and you absolutely buy in… but the perspective of a movie audience is very different.”

Sunset Blvd. had its best box office numbers yet last week, while Maybe Happy Ending showed some welcome improvement and both Elf and A Wonderful World opened to houses with 90% of seats filled.
The pre-holiday news wasn’t quite so cheery for all of Broadway though, as no fewer than 26 of the 37 productions saw downturns, some small, some not so small, for the week ending November 17. In all, the 37 shows took in $35,104,796, a slip of just about 4% from the previous week, with attendance of 304,368 off by less than a full percentage point.
Among the notable numbers:
Sunset Blvd., a couple weeks out from the Nicole Scherzinger social media flap, posted a gross of $1,902,072, up more than $44,000 over the previous week. Attendance at the St. James was at 95% of the venue’s capacity; A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical, opened at Studio 54 to mostly decent reviews, filling 92% of seats and...

The owner may be a real Grinch, but Max has some pretty magical presents to offer subscribers this holiday season.
Every year sees new Christmas movies pumped out to meet the insatiable demand of the Yuletide-obsessed. But the holidays are more often a time when people revisit the classics from their childhood or someone else’s, and it’s no surprise that Max and its deep film library — thanks to Warner Bros. Discovery’s Turner Classic Movie collection — has pound for pound the most seasonal mainstays of any streamer.
From the ’80s, you can enjoy the nostalgic childhood antics of “A Christmas Carol” or the raunchier family fun of “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” The ’90s offers an offbeat gothic selection from Tim Burton in “Batman Returns.” And for some 21st-century Max selections, you can spend Christmas in Hogwarts with the first “Harry Potter” movie, delight in all-time classic “Elf.”

Elf The Musical, the cheery – very, very cheery – revival opening tonight for a limited holiday run on Broadway, is an entirely suitable gift from a hard-working cast for fans of the well-liked 2003 Will Ferrell Christmas perennial. If you crack up at memories of Mr. Narwhal, Elf has your tinseled name on it.
For the everyone else – adults anyway – the updated Elf remains as much a mixed bag as it was during its previous two Broadway stagings in 2010 and 2012, with one major improvement: Grey Henson, the immensely likable, pitched-to-the-rafters firecracker from Mean Girls and Shucked, steps as easily into Buddy’s green winklepickers as Cinderella ever did a glass slilpper.
Henson and the rest of the cast go big and loud in the style of children’s theater,...

Early on in Denzel Washington's brilliant career, he gave critics a preview of how he was going to play the movie star game going forward -- and they weren't pleased. In between making acclaimed dramas like "Cry Freedom," "Glory," and "Mississippi Masala," Washington cut loose and sought to build up some box office cred in formulaic action movies like "Heart Condition" and "Ricochet." Reviewers who viewed Washington as a major star in the making were disappointed with, if not aghast at, his choices. What a colossal waste of the man's time and talent, they reasoned, to run around in his boxer shorts after John Lithgow in full glazed ham mode. Then he'd go and make "Malcolm X," and everyone would hush up until a frivolity like "Virtuosity" dropped.
Washington had it right. If he wanted to ensure more movies like "Malcolm X" or "Philadelphia" got made further down the line,...

A red knit scarf. That’s all Dustin Milligan’s sexy snowman ‘Jack’ is wearing when audiences first meet him in Netflix’s latest Christmas film “Hot Frosty.”
“I was obviously very exposed during all of that, but in a way, doing what I could to just shed all of my own inhibitions and be liberated as Jack would have been in that moment, Milligan tells Variety of stripping down. “It was liberating for me!”
In a fantastical plot that’s just off-the-rails enough to work, “Hot Frosty” follows Lacey Chabert’s Kathy, a widow and paragon of her local community, as she unwittingly brings a snow sculpture (with chiseled abs) to life with the help of that red scarf and a little Christmas magic.

Broadway’s hit musical revival Sunset Blvd. stayed strong last week amidst the controversy surrounding star Nicole Scherzinger’s social media post interpreted (or rather misinterpreted) by many as an endorsement of Donald Trump.
The latest Broadway grosses (for the week ending November 10) indicate that Sunset Blvd. was up $134,498 over the previous week. With attendance at the St. James Theatre at 97% of capacity (compared to 95% the previous week), the show’s total gross was a very strong $1,857,562.
In fact, the weekly gross for Sunset Blvd. was the Broadway roster’s third-highest for the week, behind only the usual favorites The Lion King ($1.9M) and perennial top grosser Wicked ($2.5M).
Scherzinger, in case you somehow missed it, set off a backlash last week after posting a response to Maga comedian and accused sexual assaulter Russell Brand, with Scherzinger asking where she, too, could get a red ball cap inscribed with “Make Jesus First Again.

It’s never too early to start your Christmas movie marathons.
Ok, that’s not true. People shouldn’t be watching Christmas movies in April. But November is fair game! There still might be a few people who throw a side-eye at you for diving deep into the Christmas canon right after putting away the Halloween decorations but there’s an easy fix – find holiday movies that toe the seasonal line.
Save the big guns like “Home Alone,” “Love, Actually,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “Christmas Vacation,” and “It’s a Wonderful Life” for December. There’s plenty of other movies that can scratch the holiday itch for you to take up November watching.
These are the Christmas films we feel are marked safe to binge in November.
Sony Pictures The Holiday
This might be the hardest sell for Christmas movies to watch in November just because it’s such a top-of-mind film for the holidays.

It’s not a horror movie, to be clear, but we thought you’d at least like to know that Jack Black is reteaming with the Farrelly Brothers (Dumb and Dumber, There’s Something About Mary, Kingpin, Shallow Hal) for the Christmas comedy Dear Santa this holiday season, with Jack Black playing Satan Claus rather than Santa Claus! EW shares the first images today.
In the upcoming Dear Santa, “Young Liam Turner (Robert Timothy Smith) still believes in Santa. To prove to all of his disbelieving friends that Santa is real, he writes a letter to the big guy inviting him to show himself. The only problem? Liam isn’t a very strong speller and addresses the letter to Satan (Jack Black) instead.
“Satan, who never gets letters from kids, is flattered and goes to meet Liam. Hijinks, chaos, and hilarity ensue.”

If you've never seen "Goodfellas," it's probably best you stop what you're doing and watch Martin Scorsese's seminal mob flick now. The film is only one of the best mob movies you need to see immediately, and alongside "The Godfather" occupies a hallowed space within the genre. Luckily, for those that are somehow uninitiated, "Goodfellas" is now streaming over on Max, where it's managing to prove its worth as an undisputed classic all over again.
Based on the book "Wiseguy" by Nicholas Pileggi, who co-write "Goodfellas" with Scorsese, the film tells the story of Henry Hill, a Brooklyn kid whose dreams of joining the mob are fulfilled after Robert DeNiro's Jimmy Conway takes him under his wing. Spanning three decades, the movie is a sweeping look at the life of a gangster, depicting all the glamor that comes with it while also not shying away from the brutality...

Halloween has come and gone, but the holidays continue. It’s that time of year again, folks! What about where to stream it? We’ve got all the answers and more!
Watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade while getting ready to have family over for dinner is a tradition many participate in. The event always airs live and features celebrity appearances, fun hosts, and musical performances. It’s a magical time, really. This year, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will air live on Thursday, Nov. 28, from 8:30 a.

Yuki Tabata’s Black Clover has great villains among its cast, and their ruthlessness and ambitions are boundless. Even among these menacing villains, Zagred’s actions are bone-chilling. He stands out for fulfilling his goals at the expense of other characters. His introduction in the anime and manga changed the momentum of the arc for the better, making the storyline more exciting.

When Disney released its new version of “The Lion King” in 2019, the company was quick to describe it as the live-action version of the beloved 1994 original.
Director Jon Favreau, who made a Christmas classic in “Elf” and jumpstarted the Marvel Cinematic Universe with “Iron Man,” was covered by the Directors Guild of America, which afforded him insurance and incentives, along with profit participation. One reported estimate had the director earning $60 million from his involvement in the film, which grossed $1.66 billion worldwide.
But this version of “The Lion King” wasn’t live-action — it was fully animated. And directors of animated films are not traditionally covered by the DGA, hence the push to categorize this feature as “live-action.”
The DGA has long kept animation directors out of the guild. And the chasm between the benefits afforded to live-action directors and animation directors is a growing source of frustration within the filmmaking community.

Many a comedian has gotten their start or boosted their career on Saturday Night Live. The sketch television show has provided commentary on historical happenings and popular culture since October 1975. The 50th anniversary of the series approaches, as does the 2024 presidential election, full of commentary opportunities and sketches.
While hosts and musical guests — in some cases the same celebrity who pulls double duty — keep the show current with actors promoting works and musicians promoting albums, a group of cast members has always been the staple backdrop for the rotation of guests. Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis as well as Elf star Will Ferrell came up on SNL as did Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Actors like Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Billy Crystal. Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis as well as Elf star Will Ferrell came up on SNL as did Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Actors like Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Billy Crystal. Golden Bachelorette Joan Vassos is well known to Bachelor Nation fans because she self-eliminated from Gerry Turner’s season of The Golden Bachelor. Golden Bachelorette Contestants, Joan Vassos
Gerry Turner owned a food franchise before his retirement, and the first Golden Bachelorette seemed to get along with him. Well, there is a contestant involved in the food industry vying for her heart. He is Jack, a caterer, 68 from Chicago, Illinois.

The Big Bang Theory stands tall among the upper echelons of popular sitcoms that audiences have loved over the years. Along with Friends and How I Met Your Mother, the Jim Parsons-led show always managed to grab eyeballs and still finds new audiences. Parsons, Johnny Galecki, and Kaley Cuoco kicked off as the main leads from season 1.

By season 3, supporting players such as Kunal Nayyar, Simon Helberg, Melissa Rauch, and Mayim Bialik became fan favorites. However, the three main leads continued to be the top earners from the show and the cast’s pay continued to be raised each season. “Harold and the Purple Crayon” is a picture book — now a movie — about the importance of imagination. So let’s try to imagine something together, shall we? Let’s all imagine a film starring Zooey Deschanel as an employee of a great big store who meets a childlike fantasy character who left home and now enters the real world in search of his father, who messes up the store she works at but ultimately teaches her a valuable lesson about believing in magic.
Have you got that film in your head? Does it look exactly like the movie “Elf,” that Christmas classic that came out over 20 years ago? Well, now imagine that it’s very purple, not very funny, and it stars Zachary Levi instead of Will Ferrell. “Harold and the Purple Crayon” claims to be about the power of the creative spirit but it’s cobbled together from so many similar films —“Enchanted,...

It’s very easy to understand why kids might love a picture book about a curious four-year-old whose purple crayon gives him the power to create anything he can think to draw. On the other hand, it’s virtually impossible to understand why kids might enjoy a meta, live-action movie continuation of Crockett Johnson’s classic story, in which the wee hero — now a swole 43-year-old manboy played by Zachary Levi — escapes into the real world as part of a “Barbie”-like quest to meet his creator, and in the process fights to protect a worn-down widow (Zooey Deschanel) from the romantic overtures of a creatively frustrated librarian (Jemaine Clement). Nothing delights young children like an existential journey through the suburbs of Providence!
