Sunset Blvd. had its best box office numbers yet last week, while Maybe Happy Ending showed some welcome improvement and both Elf and A Wonderful World opened to houses with 90% of seats filled.

The pre-holiday news wasn’t quite so cheery for all of Broadway though, as no fewer than 26 of the 37 productions saw downturns, some small, some not so small, for the week ending November 17. In all, the 37 shows took in $35,104,796, a slip of just about 4% from the previous week, with attendance of 304,368 off by less than a full percentage point.

Among the notable numbers:

Sunset Blvd., a couple weeks out from the Nicole Scherzinger social media flap, posted a gross of $1,902,072, up more than $44,000 over the previous week. The Paramount+ Holiday Collection ‘Tis The Season for Streaming returns to the service today with hundreds of seasonal movies and beloved specials for the whole household to enjoy, including the debut of the streaming service’s first original holiday film, Dear Santa.

The Farrelly Brothers holiday comedy Dear Santa stars Jack Black, Robert Timothy Smith, Keegan-Michael Key, Brianne Howey, Hayes MacArthur, and Post Malone in a story of a young boy who mails his Christmas wish list to Santa with one crucial spelling error, resulting in a devilish Jack Black’s arrival to wreak havoc on the holidays. Broadway’s hit musical revival Sunset Blvd. stayed strong last week amidst the controversy surrounding star Nicole Scherzinger’s social media post interpreted (or rather misinterpreted) by many as an endorsement of Donald Trump.

The latest Broadway grosses (for the week ending November 10) indicate that Sunset Blvd. was up $134,498 over the previous week. With attendance at the St. James Theatre at 97% of capacity (compared to 95% the previous week), the show’s total gross was a very strong $1,857,562.

In fact, the weekly gross for Sunset Blvd. was the Broadway roster’s third-highest for the week, behind only the usual favorites The Lion King ($1.9M) and perennial top grosser Wicked ($2.5M).

Scherzinger, in case you somehow missed it, set off a backlash last week after posting a response to Maga comedian and accused sexual assaulter Russell Brand, with Scherzinger asking where she, too, could get a red ball cap inscribed with “Make Jesus First Again.

It’s never too early to start your Christmas movie marathons.

Ok, that’s not true. People shouldn’t be watching Christmas movies in April. But November is fair game! There still might be a few people who throw a side-eye at you for diving deep into the Christmas canon right after putting away the Halloween decorations but there’s an easy fix – find holiday movies that toe the seasonal line.

Actor Sean Astin will make his Broadway debut this holiday season as Santa in the revival of Elf The Musical, producers announced today.

Astin, best known for his roles in the original Lord of the Rings films and more recently Stranger Things and The Conners, will costar opposite Grey Henson who will play Buddy the Elf.

Elf The Musical, returning to Broadway for the first time in more than a decade, begins previews at the Marquis Theatre on Saturday, November 9, with an official opening on Sunday, November 17. The limited engagement runs through Saturday, January 4, 2025.

Astin will play Santa, with Tony Award nominee Grey Henson (Mean Girls, Shucked) playing Buddy the Elf. The musical will play The Marquis Theatre starting Nov. 9, with an opening night Nov. 17.

Astin is well-known for his onscreen roles as Mikey Walsh in The Goonies, the title character of Rudy, Samwise Gamgee in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Doug Whitmore in 50 First Dates and Bob Newby in Stranger Things.

Producers Temple Live Entertainment and Crossroads Live North America announced the engagement today. The musical, which originally opened on Broadway in 2010, will begin previews at The Marquis Theatre on Saturday, November 9, with an official opening night on Sunday, November 17. The engagement will run through Saturday, January 4, 2025.
