Based on the novel by Anthony Burgess, Stanley Kubrick's 1971 film "A Clockwork Orange" is set in the not-too-distant future when roving British teenage gangs have mutated into bizarre, ultra-violent, morals-free hedonists who commit crimes to their hearts' content. The protagonist is Alex DeLarge (Malcolm McDowell) a 15-year-old punk who drinks drug-laced milk before taking to the street with his gang of droogs to savagely and gleefully beat and assault anyone who passes into their field of vision. Alex is eventually arrested and put into prison where the government subjects him to bizarre new rehabilitation techniques in an attempt to turn his mind away from violence.
Throughout, Alex is depicted as clearly beyond redemption. He has no compassion and will never have compassion. When he reads about Jesus Christ being crucified, he imagines himself to be the Roman soldier whipping him. The government's brainwashing techniques only instill in him a...

Guest review by Darwyn Carson Right off, I admit there's a soft spot in my heart for British-produced mysteries and dramas. The Last Detective is right at the top of my fav's list. This lighthearted BBC TV-fare, based on the Dangerous Davies novels by Leslie Thomas, escaped my attention until last year after Acorn released season four on DVD. I watched it all one weekend and wanted more. Lucky me: Acorn is distributing the entire series in one package (17 episodes) and I get to see how Detective Constable Davies came to be nicknamed Dangerous—he is not—from the very beginning. Peter Davison stars as Davies, a forty-something man on the fast-track to nowhere in the township of...

While the MST3K version is still near and dear to my heart, it is fun to see the restored original Gamera: The Giant Monster (Shout Factory, Not Rated, DVD-$19.93 Srp) in its DVD debut, sporting an audio commentary and a retrospective featurette. It’s a giant turtle, for criminy’s sake!

obsession: the plays of William Shakespeare (cuz he never goes out of style) boyfriend: Peter Davison in The Last Detective at the moment (but pretty much forever in anything) psyched: absolutely nothing (the next month or so is a movie wasteland) dreading: Knowing (see above about cinematic wastelands) enemy: everyone responsible for Fired Up! (for trying to pass off such disgusting oafs as heroes) I consider my current obsession with Shakespeare movie-related, not only because so many of his plays have ended up on the big screen. He was the consummate teller of stories in motion, full of action and intrigue and murder and romance. He’d have loved movies, and he probably would have written some great ones. Very soon -- I promise -- I’ll share my reactions to the Royal Shakespeare Company’s productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Taming of the Shrew that...

Speaking of gorgeous guys and The Last Detective... Included in the Complete Collection DVD set of The Last Detective is an interview with Peter Davison. And he’s very charming as he talks about the show (I met him twice years ago in Doctor Who fandom settings, and he was charming then, too). But he also has an adorable growth of facial hair, which I have never seen him sport before: Why the beard? He was playing King Arthur in Spamalot! in the West End. I would have loved to see that.

All through my viewing of The Last Detective, familiar faces kept popping up. One episode features, in a small role, Peter Davison’s own daughter, Georgia Moffat (not playing a relation to his character, though) -- she, of course, played the Doctor’s cloned offspring in “The Doctor’s Daughter.” That same episode of Last Detective also featured Camille Coduri, who has played Rose’s mum Jackie in numerous episodes of Doctor Who. That episode just about imploded from meta Doctor Who referencing. Battlestar Galactica’s Jamie Bamber appears in the fourth series episode “Dangerous’ Liaisons”:...

Oh my goodness, I’ve been in love with Peter Davison for 25 years -- through All Creatures Great and Small and Doctor Who and Albert Campion and A Very Peculiar Practice -- and oh dear, I’ve just fallen in love with him all over again in The Last Detective. This 2003-2007 ITV series never aired in the U.S., but now at least we can watch it on DVD. Which is a damn sight better than the Brits get, actually: a two-disc set is all that’s available in Region 2, which, I’m guessing, includes only the first of the four series in the Complete Collection, just out in Region 1. We get nine discs and seventeen episodes... although they’re more like mini movies: after the 90-minute pilot, each subsequent story is about 75 minutes long. (There’s also an entire bonus movie: a standalone adaptation from 1981 starring Bernard Cribbins...
