Leading Spanish production house Morena Films is teaming with A Contracorriente Films, one of Spain’s top indie distributors, and “The Beasts” French co-producer Noodle Productions to produce “Fairy Queen”, a feature inspired by “Paris 70” which was shortlisted on Dec. 17 for the 97th Oscars.
A Contracorriente Films will handle theatrical distribution in Spain.
One of 15 films in the live-action short category and reckoned by Variety to be one of the category’s frontrunners, “Paris 70” is directed by Dani Feixas, a short film and doc feature helmer. It is written by Nach Solis, turning on Jan (Alain Hernández) as he takes care of his mother, Angela (Luisa Gavasa), who suffers from advanced Alzheimer’s disease.
Every day, his mother asks about his father. Jan’s answer plunges her into deep sadness and confusion. Exhausted and distraught at his mother’s distress, one day Jan tells her a white lie: His father...

Hit by last year’s Hollywood’s strikes, total box office in 2024 in Spain dipped 2% compared to 2023, breaking three consecutive years of recovery over 2021-23, Comscore Movies Spain announced Monday. At 71 million admissions, attendance edged down 5% compared to last year.
At €477 million ($496.1 million), total box office in Spain was 29% below a pre-covid 19 average over 2017-19, but still 21% up on a post-pandemic average over 2021-23 as Spain and box office at large around the world continues its halting rebound from 2020.
That said, some 2024 results in Spain were heartening.
While first half admissions were 13% down on same period last year, the second half regained momentum against the same period in 2023, auguring well for 2025, observed David Rodríguez, Comscore Movies general manager for Spain and Portugal.
“Inside Out 2” grossed a spectacular €45.5 million ($47.3 million), the second best result for any movie in Spain since “Spanish Affair” in 2014 (€56 million: $58 million), just bested by “Avatar: The Way of Water...

Spain’s Latido Films has acquired Eva Libertad’s upcoming feature “Sorda,” adapted from her 2023 Spanish Academy Goya Award-nominated short of the same name.
“Sorda,” which translates to “deaf” in English, tells the story of Angela, a pregnant deaf woman, and Hector, her hearing partner. Pregnancy brings to the surface her fears about motherhood and how she will be able to communicate with her daughter. The arrival of the girl generates a crisis in the couple and leads Angela to face the upbringing of her daughter in a world that is not made for her.
Libertad wrote and is directing the film, a continuation of her 2023 short of the same name that starred her sister, Miriam Garlo. In addition to a Spanish Academy Goya nomination, the film was selected by more than 110 festivals and won more than 60 awards.

Powered by “Barbenheimer,” 2023 box office in Spain surged 31% to €487.5 ($541.1 million), still 18.2% below a pre-pandemic average of €596 million ($661.6 million) over 2015-19.
At 74.9 million tickets sold, admissions rose 26%, 24% down on pre-covid cinemagoing, according to Comscore Movies Spain, which announced 2023 results through Dec. 29 on Friday.
“2023 was the third consecutive year of box office recovery in Spain,” David Rodríguez, Comscore Movies general manager for Spain and Portugal, told Variety.
That said, Spain’s 2023 recovery looks set to continue down on France’s and Germany’s and most especially the U.K.’s, but in line with Italy’s.
“Economies in Northern Europe are stronger and Covid-19 restrictions on cinema attendance lasted longer in Spain and Italy,” said Rodríguez.
As all over the world, war in the Ukraine, Gaza and above all Hollywood’s double strike, which pushed back key releases to 2024 and 2025, created “turbulence,” frustrating a more powerful B.O. rally in Spain, he added.

The films were Ok but lacked some luster on the whole. The list of winners of the festival(s) follows. Women filmmakers swept most of the top awards from Competition to Un Certain Regard and Critics’ Week. The market was also Ok, but not great. Rights sold before the festival and during the festival are listed with the winning titles.
The disrupters, the big streamers, were in the background and theatrical rights were being acquired by indie distributors. France’s theatrical exhibition has sprung back to its pre-covid levels while others’ like Germany, Italy and the U.S. remain 30% below.

The most common line heard on the Croisette was that the main section was stuffed with minor films from major directors, which does no one any favors. But there were happy exceptions, which included 83-year-old Marco Bellocchio’s dramatically exciting and thought-provoking Kidnapped, a summing-up of his many films dealing with the Catholic religion and how a child’s cultural identity is created beginning at a young age. Disappointingly, the jury led by two-time Palme d’Or winner Ruben Ostlund overlooked the film entirely when they awarded their prizes.Another classic director who returned in top form was 77-year-old Wim Wenders with two masterful films: Anselm, a ravishing 3D documentary portrait of artist Anselm Kiefer, and Perfect Days, a lyrical Japanese-language character study of a Tokyo toilet attendant. Blessed by largely clement weather, San Sebastian fairly hummed, as hundreds of industry execs sat down to talk face to face – some, especially from Latin America, for the first time since February 2020. As at Venice, Latin American producers could talk on-site and with some degree of confidence about putting movies long in development into production. So the 69th San Sebastián Festival proved a joyous and energy-sluiced affair. Following, some of its highlights:
San Sebastian Rebounds
Through Thursday, total San Sebastian delegates numbers came in at 3,848, 46.5% up on 2020 and just 11% down on a pre-pandemic 2019. Industry reps drove much of that rebound, San Sebastian welcoming 1,686 this year, compared to 1,185 in 2020 and 1,749 in 2019. “Everyone’s very active, enthusiastic, appreciating seeing one another again. We really wanted to be here,” said Ventana Sur co-director Bernardo Bergeret. He added that late November’s Ventana Sur had received a record number of applications for accreditations. Expect...

Box office in Spain crashed 72% in 2020 to a total €169.7 million ($207 million), with Covid-19 wiping over half a billion dollars from box office sales this year, Comscore announced Tuesday.
By way of comparison, 2019 total box office in Spain stood at €605 million ($738 million). Spanish cinema admissions similarly plunged from 105 million tickets sold last year, a recent-year record, to 28.2 million in 2020.
In line with analysts’ expectations for not only Spain but much of Europe, admissions were the lowest since records began in 1965, and plunged despite cinema theaters remaining open in most of Spain since late June, save for Catalonia and Andalusia, in contrast to Europe’s other biggest markets.
Yet even in such dire circumstances, there were blue sky moments. The highest-grossing movie of the year opened in Spain, for example, after Covid-19 had hit Madrid harder than any other city in Europe.

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired the rights to the U.S. and select international territories for “The Father,” which stars Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman and is set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival later this month.
“The Father” is based on French writer Florian Zeller’s own adaptation of his acclaimed stage play. Zeller directed the film based on a screenplay he co-wrote with Osfar winner Christopher Hampton.
In the upcoming film adaptation, Hopkins and Colman star as father and daughter — one mischievous, the other caring — who battle the universal prophecy of loss that comes with age. “The Father” hums and bristles with compassion; celebrating an intimate, absorbing, comedic, and moving story about our own real-life human condition, according to Sony’s description. No release information has yet been set for the film.

For the best part of 20 years Chris Blackburn tried his hand at writing film scripts, a sideline to his day jobs as a newspaper and TV reporter, reality show producer and, currently, as a co-executive producer on Big Brother.
Eighteen months ago he had an idea for a crime drama about a young man whose sister has been brutally murdered, set primarily in a row of vacant houses near his home on the north coast of Nsw.
Blackburn wrote the script and asked his son Tim, a TV editor who has directed several short films to direct. Entitled Burns Point, the film is now in day seven of a 21-day shoot in and around the town of Ballina.
Asked how he.s financed the film, Chris tells If, .It.s mostly me. I.ve saved up for this and put money aside." Cast and crew are working on deferred. fees in some cases.

Chloë Grace Moretz and Keira Knightley star in director Lynn Shelton’s “Laggies”
Laggies
Directed by Lynn Shelton
Written by Andrea Seigel
USA, 2014
Keira Knightley stars in the new movie by director Lynn Shelton (Humpday, Your Sister’s Sister) that seeks to reason why a young woman hasn’t grown up yet. It’s a film about hesitancy and not knowing exactly what you need to achieve happiness. Swimming upstream of what everyone else wants for her, the lead character experiences a sea change and begins to buck other people’s advice. Laggies is a stimulating film that deals with individualism and perhaps relies too much on buoying a woman’s true identity with romantic interest but still succeeds in introducing a female character who dares to break away from expectation to do what she wants, even if she hasn’t a clue what that may be.
Sign-spinning for her father,...

While they often make us a feel a little uneasy about going into the water, shark movies have always proven a hit with audiences. Fans of the genre may be excited to hear that shooting has just started on the Gold Coast for Bait 3D, a new shark action film shot in, uh, 3D. The script was penned by Australian born Russell Mulcahy - director of 1986's Highlander, the Jesse Spencer/Geoffrey Rush starrer Swimming Upstream and more recently Resident Evil: Extinction - who was also originally meant to direct the film. However directorial duties were passed to Kimble Rendall, who finally follows up the Kylie Minogue and Molly Ringwald shocker, Cut (2000), in the meantime working as an assistant director on an impressive array of commercial hits including the recently shot actioner The Killer Elite, as well as Knowing and Matrix Reloaded.
