As another year of horror ends, we reflect on the best this genre had to offer. Usually, that means focusing on those movies that drew the most attention. However, there are also those movies that slipped under everyone’s radars for whatever reason, ultimately causing them to be overlooked. So the objective here is to bring more attention to these releases as horror fans play catch-up.
Like last year, 2023 was a strong year for horror. And these ten hidden gems might have escaped notice at the time, but it’s never too late to discover them now.
Pollen

In the vein of other horror movies about misunderstood outsiders, like May and Love Object, D.W. Medoff‘s first long feature Pollen focuses on an individual whose awkward and unconventional ways make her stand out in society. Although, it wasn’t always...

This month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies. Some selections reflect a specific day or event in February, and others were chosen at random.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
From a killer bear to a man-eating demon, here are five hidden horror gems and deep cuts that you can check out in February 2023.
Trapped (1973)
Directed by Frank De Felitta.
In this offering from ABC Movie of the Week, James Brolin plays a divorced father looking for a certain gift for his daughter. Had he not tried to thwart a mugging, though, his character might have been able to deliver the gift on time. Instead, the protagonist is rendered unconscious until he wakes up alone in the mall. Well, not completely alone because the grounds are...

A subset of killer doll horror movies features psychological horror movies where the doll remains an inanimate object throughout; any homicidal urges or personality are merely a projection by a fractured mind. Anthony Hopkins’ Corky in Magic serves as one of the most prominent examples, and love presented a warped love triangle that catalyzed self-destruction. It paved […]

The Academy Award nominations have been announced and cinephiles are scrambling to catch up on the Best Picture honorees before the big ceremony. Not everyone is a fan of Oscar, though. Perhaps you are already sick of hearing about the Wolf of Wall Street controversy or Matthew McConaughey's weight loss. If you prefer something a little more scary, silly, and/or gory than what the Academy Awards has to offer, here are nine comparable alternatives for horror fans.
Instead of: Gravity
Watch: Europa Report (2013)
While Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity is arguably a horror movie itself (and a gorgeous one at that), it was not the only critically-acclaimed space-terror film of last year. Sebastián Cordero directed an international cast of actors in this tense sci-fi/horror about a space crew seeking alien life on Jupiter's moon. Just when we were all sick of found footage, Europa Report proved there is still life in the subgenre.

Some people go to therapy. Tim Burton makes a music video.
The "Frankenweenie" director seems to be working out some personal issues with the music video for The Killers' "Here With Me," the new single from the band's latest album, "Battle Born." Some of it's kind of cute. And some of it might make your skin crawl a little.
We agree with Shock Till You Drop that the whole thing has a "Love Object" (remember that movie?) and "Lars and the Real Girl" (we know you remember that one) kind of vibe with its tale of a young weirdo pining after some sort of inanimate object made to look like a woman (in this case, a sort of wax museum statue). But there's a little more going on here than just a twisted yet whimsical love story ...
Okay, is it just us, or has Burton made Craig Roberts ("Submarine") look...

The Killers, who have a new album out called "Battle Born," and the band has reunited with director Tim Burton for a new music video for the single "Here With Me."
Submarine's Craig Roberts stars as does Burton regular Winona Ryder and the whole thing has a very Love Object/Lars and the Real Girl vibe. Amusing stuff and a must-see for Burton fans.
Burton previously worked with The Killers on the Ray Harryhausen-inspired music video for "Bones."

It is no secret that I have somewhat of an obsession with RealDolls – the $6,000 life-size sex toy – and the whole idea/fetish surrounding them. I'm constantly hunting down films that creatively explore the topic, such as Love Object, Lars and the Real Girl and Air Doll. So, when I saw the trailer for The Mechanical Bride, Allison de Fren's documentary on the topic, I knew I had to see it.
As is often the case with "pop" documentaries about alternative lifestyles and sexuality, I was expecting The Mechanical Bride either to rely on shock value by exploiting its participants for entertainment purposes or to take a critical/judgmental approach to the topic. I'm happy to report that was I wrong.
Instead, de Fren takes an anthropological approach, skillfully providing an overview of this fascinating "fetish" while trying to...

Welcome to the inaugural edition of The Streaming Dead, where I will be sharing with you some titles of note that have been added to Netflix Instant during the month of April 2012.
If you missed my initial post on what to expect from this column, you can read it here. However, if you don’t feel like reading that piece, the gist of it is that this column will feature three recommendations from the new crop of horror titles that are currently available for streaming via Netflix Instant: One “Featured” title from the latest additions to the streaming library; One title chosen from the many pre-existing titles that the service offers; One pick chosen from the titles that will be expiring within the next few weeks. Following those recommendations will be a quick rundown of several other horror-related titles that have recently been added or renewed that you may be interested in checking out.

With Screamfest La celebrating its 11th anniversary this fall (the venerated Los Angeles film festival – which is spearheaded by Rachel Belofsky – runs this October 14-23 in Hollywood, CA), the fest hosted last Thursday night another of its monthly mixers, and we were there to snap a few photos and to chat with the filmmakers in attendance.
On hand for the event (which took place at Hollywood Boulevard’s tequila bar Te’Kila) was FX artist and reality TV star Frank Ippolito, who stated of the release status of his short film Night of the Little Dead (a flick we were able to see the subsequent night at the cast and crew screening, and a trailer to which you can see here), “It’s finished. We have a 5.1 Surround mix, it’s all HD and shit, and we are shopping it around to find what film festival we are going to premiere it at.

File these films under “things that can’t be unseen.” A disturbing horror movie is something beyond the average horror film. It’s a film that challenges our humanity through the presentation of inhumane behaviors. These films unsettle the viewer during the movie and long after the credits have rolled. They offer an opportunity for the viewer to understand and strengthen his or her beliefs and ethics. The following are the top ten best disturbing, original horror films. 10. “Love Object” (2003)—Kenneth (Desmond Harrington of “Wrong Turn” ...

Blow-up dolls and their various incarnations are, surprisingly, a fairly popular source of inspiration for modern filmmakers. From Craig Gillespie’s grossly underrated comedy “Lars and the Real Girl” to Robert Parigi’s deeply disturbing horror opus “Love Object,” these strange dolls have provided plenty of entertainment to those in the market for something oddly sexual and decidedly off-beat. Japanese director Hirokazu Koreeda (“Nobody Knows”, “Still Walking”) tosses his hat into the proverbial ring with “Air Doll,” a film based on the manga by Yoshiie Goda. And while I’m usually not attracted to this sort of melodramatic motion picture, the idea of a blow-up doll’s struggle to understand her newfound soul is very intriguing to me. Then again, maybe I’m just a closet pervert with an insatiable fetish for inflatable rubber women. A synopsis for the uninformed, courtesy of 24 Frames Per Second: A life-size Air Doll lives...
