It’s no longer shocking when established film directors turn to TV — after all, Martin Scorsese, Jane Campion, and David Fincher have all done it recently to great acclaim.
Still, you may be surprised to learn that Lifetime’s upcoming Anna Nicole Smith biopic was directed by none other than Mary Harron — a filmmaker best known for her wicked work on controversial cult favorites like I Shot Andy Warhol and American Psycho. Thanks in part to Harron’s pedigree, the movie also managed to attract an unusually accomplished cast, including Oscar winner Martin Landau (as Anna Nicole’s wealthy husband J.

"We saw a marriage in Season 1, and now we are going to see Kendra navigate the unfamiliar waters of being a newlywed and a new parent all at the same time," said Lisa Berger, executive vp original programming and series development at E! "We can't wait to be there with her every step of the way."

More than two years after Anna Nicole Smith died from a lethal cocktail of prescription drugs, authorities have filed the first criminal charges – targeting her former attorney and boyfriend, Howard K. Stern. Stern, 40, a fixture at Smith's side for years who once claimed to be the father of her daughter Dannielynn, has been formally charged with conspiring to furnish drugs to Smith prior to her death, prosecutors said Thursday. He was arrested and booked by police in Whittier, Calif., with bail set for $20,000, police records show. Former model and reality TV star Anna Nicole Smith has died after being rushed to a Florida hospital following a collapse at a Florida hotel; she was 39. According to initial reports, Smith was found unconscious in her room at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, Thursday afternoon, and was unresponsive when a rescue unit arrived at the scene. She was then rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital after 2pm ET. Her attorney, Ron Rale, confirmed that Smith died at the hospital about an hour later. Smith had most recently been involved a paternity suit over her daughter Dannilynn, instigated by her former boyfriend Larry Birkhead, who claimed he was the father of the child and not Howard K. Stern, Smith's lawyer, boyfriend, and co-star on her reality TV show. The paternity suit, as well another lawsuit, a class-action suit brought against her and the diet company TrimSpa, came on the heels of the death of her son, Daniel Smith, who died in his mother's hospital room in the Bahamas of a drug overdose just three days after the birth of Dannilynn on September 7, 2006. Ultimately, the death was ruled accidental after extensive coverage and private medical examination. Born in Houston, Texas, Smith cultivated a blonde, Marilyn Monroe-style image and became famous initially as 1993's Playboy Playmate of the Year and as a model for Guess jeans in the early '90s. In 1994 she married millionaire and oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II, who would be her second husband; he was 89, she was 27. When he died in 1995, she became embroiled in a feud with her husband's family over the rights to the $400 million estate, the beginning of a protracted legal battle that would go all the way to the Supreme Court, which decided that the case could only be tried by the California federal courts, invalidating a Texas state court ruling. After fading from the spotlight, Smith resurfaced in 2002 with a reality show, The Anna Nicole Show, and as the spokeswoman for TrimSpa diet pills, to which she attributed her dramatic weight loss. For years, she became a prominent tabloid figure, as magazines chronicled her life's ups and downs and the continuous court battle with her in-laws. Smith reportedly married Howard K. Stern in September 2006 in the Bahamas, though according to some reports, the marriage was not legally binding. Further details surrounding the cause of death were not immediately available. --Mark Englehart, IMDb staff...

Fears Grow for Anna Nicole's Health
Reality TV star Anna Nicole Smith's strict slimming regime has become the subject of grave concern for close pals - because she's shifting pounds by refusing to eat. The busty star - whose svelte figure bears no resemblance to her buxom frame in hit TV program The Anna Nicole Show - is continuing to shed weight by avoiding food, and friends fear her extreme efforts to slim down are posing a dangerous threat to her health. One says, "She hardly eats. A while back she couldn't pick up a box of cookies without eating them all - now she won't even read the label. She hardly eats at all because she loves all the praise she gets for getting slim again. She's wasting away." Smith is heading to France to film a European vacation documentary for her next professional venture.

Anna Nicole's Reality Show Cancelled
Busty heiress Anna Nicole Smith has just learned her critically-panned reality show has been cancelled, after more than seven months in limbo. The Anna Nicole Show debuted on entertainment TV network E! in 2002 to shockingly high ratings, which quickly dwindled over the months. And now the voluptuous blonde is free from her series, she's quickly signed up with E! to take on another show called Anna Nicole Bares It All, which debuts on February 22. Cameras will follow the Texas native as she prepares for her first catwalk job in years for New York's Fashion Week. Production begins this week.

E! sets sights on A-listers with 12 new series on slate
Facing stiff competition in the celebrity-reality genre, E! Entertainment will bolster its schedule with 12 new series this year. The cable channel responsible for The Anna Nicole Show has seen its programming specialty co-opted everywhere, from broadcast series like ABC's I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here! to fellow cable nets like VH1 with The Fabulous Life. The new dozen, shepherded to air by E!'s new development division, refocuses the network on A-list stars rather than the figures on the fringes of showbiz -- as seen in The Michael Essany Show and Star Dates. Both of those first-year series were renewed; the verdict on Anna is still to be determined.

'Shield' finale down from '02
NEW YORK -- The second-season finale of the original FX series The Shield didn't match last year's results, but the season average did. Tuesday night's episode scored a 3.2 household rating (3.7 million viewers and 2.6 million households). Those Nielsen numbers represent a step down from last year's finale, which drew a 3.9, but Shield closed out the season strong in the male 18-34 demo, notching a 4.2 rating. The second season averaged a 2.8 rating and a 2.3 in 18-49, identical to the first-season average in both of those demos. Shield actually improved its totals in adults 18-34 (9%), men 18-34 (7%) and men 18-49 (18%) over the previous season. "Considering the track record cable series like The Osbournes and The Anna Nicole Show have in their sophomore seasons, 'Shield' has had a remarkable season," said Steve Leblang, senior vp strategic planning and research at FX.

Anna Nicole Gets Second Season
Anna Nicole Smith's reality documentary show has won a second season. The Anna Nicole Show - which follows the life of the 34-year-old former Playboy model - has been panned by critics. But if Mark Sonnenberg at cable network E! Entertainment Television is to be believed, "Viewers are captivated by Anna Nicole's surreal world." In an announcement yesterday Sonnenberg revealed 13 more episodes of the show will begin production next month. He said, "They (viewers) are rooting for her to turn her life around, get back into shape and revitalize her love life. What's in store next for Anna Nicole remains to be seen." When the show first aired in August it scored the highest ratings ever for an E! program, but numbers have since slipped.

Liza's Diva Behavior
Liza Minnelli has been behaving like a diva while preparing her new VH1 reality show Liza And David's Dinner Party. The Cabaret star and her manager/husband David Gest haven't been very co-operative in the preparations for the show, which is meant to challenge MTV's The Osbournes and E!'s The Anna Nicole Show in the cable voyeurism sweepstakes. An insider told the New York Daily News, "They haven't been nasty but haven't exactly been considerate." VH1 execs had arranged to hold interviews for the job of executive producer in the "nicest conference room in the Viacom building" in New York, but the room proved unacceptable to the couple, who insisted the meetings took place at their favorite hotel, the Plaza Athenee. And when VH1 booked the luxury suite, Liza didn't turn up. The source says, "Liza didn't even show up. It was just David, which is OK, since he's the TV producer. But eventually she'll have to meet the producer, so they'll have to do it again." Liza also cancelled a photo shoot. The couple's rep Warren Cowan explains, "Liza had a little cold. So they were a little late. So they changed the site to the Plaza Athénée. What difference does it make? There's no problem here. There is a love affair between VH1 and Liza and David." A VH1 rep vouches the delayed meeting "was mutually changed. VH1 is really happy with Liza and David. They're our No.1 project."...
