Ethan Hawke must have taken a shine to the feeling of a leather hat on his head as he can now be seen again in the ol’ wild west as a rugged hero and damn fine shot in the first trailer for Ti West‘s In a Valley of Violence. When a drifter (Hawke) and his dog wander into a small town, a local gunslinger (a gleeful James Ransone) picks a fight he wasn’t ready to start in earnest, but soon becomes hellbent on finishing after he’s shown up and knocked out cold by the loner. The sheriff (John Travolta, sporting some facial hair) just wants peace and quiet, upset once the violence breaks out in spades as he knows the drifter has a military past. The trailer for the film set to arrive this October promises dark humor, plenty of violence, and a tad bit of human-dog bonding.

With production kicking off in just over a month, Christopher Nolan has been assembling his ensemble for Dunkirk, an IMAX-shot World War II actioner that Warner Bros. have given a prime summer spot on their 2017 slate. Having already cast some familiar faces (Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, and Tom Hardy), newcomers (Jack Lowden, Aneurin Barnard, and Fionn Whitehead), and a requisite One Direction member (Harry Styles), another name has been added to the call sheet.
The Wrap reports that Cillian Murphy, who worked with Nolan on Inception and The Dark Night trilogy, has joined the project. While his specific role is unknown, he’ll be more on the supporting side alongside the well-known group of Hardy, Branagh and Rylance. Murphy, who has done fantastic work in films such as Sunshine and The Wind That Shakes the Barley, will also be seen in Ben Wheatley‘s Free Fire later this year.

One of the more famous stories that came out of the production of Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Night" was that in order to prepare for his role as The Joker, Heath Ledger locked himself in a hotel room for weeks on end and documented his preparation in a journal to allow himself to get into the character.
Now a clip has gone line from a sequence in "Too Young To Die," the upcoming documentary about the late actor, with Ledger's father Kim looking over that very journal. The older Ledger says: "He pretty well locked himself up in a hotel, in his apartment, for a month or so, to sort of galvanize the upcoming character in his own mind. That was typical of Heath on any movie. He would certainly immerse himself in the upcoming character. I think this was just a whole new level."

Anne Hathaway, the Oscar-winning actress, recently admitted that achieving fame was a difficult experience for her.
Anne Hathaway On Fame
"This fame thing? F--ked me up for a really long time," Hathaway told Elle U.K. "I didn't know how to do it; I didn't know how to engage with it; it stressed me out. And people would say, 'You just have to be yourself,' and I was like, 'But I don't know who that is yet!'"
The media attention on Hathaway reached an all-time high following her performance as Fantine in Tom Hooper's Les Miserables. Though Hathaway earned an Oscar for the performance, she also received a fair amount of criticism – which mostly consisted of personal attacks that had little to do with her acting chops. A couple years removed from the worst of it, Hathaway says she’s no longer troubled by others’ perceptions.

Daniel Radcliffe has said that he’d love to take on the role of Robin in 2016’s upcoming superhero epic Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice.
The Harry Potter star has been trying to move away from his role in the blockbuster wizarding franchise but seems ready to go mainstream again after roles in more niche films such as beat poet based murder caper Kill Your Darlings and dark Canadian thriller Horns.
When asked by Buzzfeed if he’d like to return to a franchise the British actor said: “Batman. If they do that again, I’ll do that too. It’s happening isn’t it?” He added:“With Ben Affleck. I could be Robin. I’m perfect.”

There are two definitions of "progressive" with respect to music. One is the progression of a band: how it develops over time, finding itself, setting its style (assuming it finds one), channeling its influences, etc.
The other is a genre of rock music, one which I have defined as "a mindset, a conscious and deliberate approach to writing rock music based on certain elements, which usually include some or all of the following: incorporation of Western (classical, jazz et al), Eastern (Indian, Middle Eastern, et al.) and/or 'world music' (African, Latin, et al.) influences; use of non-standard (for rock) chord progressions; use of odd and/or shifting time signatures; use of non-standard (for rock) instrumentation (from sax, flute, or violin to sitar, bagpipes, or African percussion); an 'orchestral' (i.e., scored) approach to arrangement; extended compositions, often including extended instrumental passages; virtuoso musicianship,...

2012 was a great year for film but a terrible year for TribecaFilm.com Web Producer Mark Sikes. He is going through a midlife crisis. Here are the top films that helped him through the pain. Beast of The Southern Wild (Benh Zeitlin) When you are wallowing in a gyre of sadness and self-doubt, go to a fantasy movie. Or a Pixar movie. Or any movie. Silver Linings Play Book (David O. Russell) Any good midlife crisis reading list should include some Nietzsche. After seeing this film, I thought "If you stare into the abyss, Bradley Cooper stares back." The Dark Night Rises (Christopher Nolan) Shortly after my wife left me, I would fantasize that I was Christian Bale. Thats all. Safety Not Guaranteed (Colin Trevorrow) This film was like Hot Tub Time Machine without the Hot Tub or the funny. Movies about time machines are probably not a great choice for me right now.

Johnny Depp is set to star in cinematographer Wally Pfister's directorial debut, "Transcendence." Written by Jack Paglen, and developed at Straight Up Films, the story is currently being kept a secret. Pfister did, however, drop these details: "It’s a present-day science fiction film, a fairly big concept. It’s bigger budget — not as big as 'Batman,' but not independent." Pfister's longtime collaborator Christopher Nolan (they worked together on "Inception," "The Dark Night" trilogy, "The Prestige" and "Memento") will exec produce along with Emma Thomas. “I'm thrilled," says Pfister. "And feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Johnny. He is a creative and intelligent artist whom I feel will bring great depth to the character and the overall narrative." Pfister won his Best Cinematography Oscar for "Inception," and was...

Is there hope that Dan and Serena, one of the core couples of Gossip Girl Season 1 and 2, could be together once again by the end of the coming sixth and final season of the CW series this fall?
It's all very unclear, but consider this:
We've already seen pictures of them on a motorcycle, which conjured up images of their first date, and TV Line reports today that the producers are planning a callback to Season 2's epic episode “The Dark Night.”
We can expect to find Dan and Serena trapped in an elevator together again. In "The Dark Night," they parted ways after the doors opened (below). Will an elevator bring them back together in Season 6?

In the wake of the terrible shootings in Aurora Co during the midnight showing of The Dark Night Rises, I was contacted by television station Wrtv in Richmond Va to comment about my Batman anti-gun violence book, Batman: Seduction of the Gun, that was first published in 1993. Those interested in the interview can find it here.
The stand-alone Batman story was done in response to the killing of John Reisenbach, the son of a Warner’s executive. DC wanted to respond at the time and it was felt that Batman was the logical choice for the story as his own parents were victims of gun violence and had a well-known aversion of handguns.
Denny O’Neil was the Batman editor back then and offered me the writing job, knowing I had once worked with an anti-gun organization. Denny emphasized that we couldn’t just preach; first and foremost we had to tell a good story.

The Dark Night Rises star Joseph Gordon-Levitt is on the attack. The actor is claiming that GQ magazine was "irresponsible" and just plain wrong when it printed a recent article claiming that Joseph’s older brother Dan died of a drug overdose in 2010.
"I’m writing this because I have a problem with what their article says about my brother," Gordon-Levitt posted on his website (Tumblr). "I’ll be honest, it made me feel terrible...The allegations to which the writer must be referring were made by a handful of gossip websites. They are factually incorrect according to the coroner’s office and the police department." The actor provides the quote on his website to prove his point.
We totally understand why Joseph would be upset, and it’s already probably a touchy subject for him and his family. GQ has yet to comment on the mistake, and we’re...

Marvel might rule the live-action comic book movie arena, but when it comes to direct-to-dvd animated action DC takes the trophy. They consistently pump out great versions of different story arcs comic book fans have wanted to see in motion for decades. DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Premiere bring us the latest animated addition to their movie collection with Superman vs. The Elite.
The movie is based on the 2001 story "What's So Funny About Truth, Justice & the American Way?" that was published in Action Comics #775. Superman's ethical ways of doing things are put into question when a new group of super-powered crime fighters show up. The new group known as the Elite does what it has to in order to get the job done… which includes killing the enemy. The Man of Steel begins to wonder if his way of doing things has become irrelevant. Does humanity in the 21st...

I know I'm still basking in the afterglow of seeing "The Avengers" (it was teh awesomez!) and I haven't even seen "The Dark Knight Rises" yet, but I feel confident in the following statement: 2012 is the best superhero movie summer ever. And it is likely to stay that way for some time.
I'm not making radical pronouncements here – I'm not saying these are the best superhero movies of all time (though some distance may prove that to be the case) but as a masterwork in programming, 2012 attains a level of purity that comes around once in a lifetime.
Comic books and superhero movies, well, they do best when they play to their strengths – and what do we expect from these modern mythologies more than clearly drawn distinctions? Good and bad, black and white, Power Girl and Zatanna. What Summer 2012 is giving us are the two extremes of superhero movies made by absolute masters.

The final trends covered in this brief overview of this year’s pilot season are the new bout of network sitcoms and also the new cable shows that are fighting their way onto your screens.
Sitcoms appear to be following the trend of success stories like Modern Family and New Girl and becoming more single-camera based than traditional multi-camera. Multi-camera sitcoms being the shows recorded in front of audiences on sets a la Friends and Seinfeld, whilst single camera sitcoms are the ones that are shot more like films with plenty of different locations a la Parks and Recreation and Community. This trend doesn’t seem to apply, however, if you’re CBS, the network appears to be enjoying a renaissance of multi-camera sitcoms with the successes of How I Met Your Mother and The Big Bang Theory which were both picked up for multiple seasons earlier this year.

A few days ago, Sound on Sight’s Michael Ryan posted “Why Kathryn Bigelow Should Direct Captain America 2” (Sos 3/2/12). In a wonderfully deft essay (take a bow, Michael), he parsed the comic book history of the Captain America character and saw, in the superhero’s 1960s resurrection, some of the same themes of dislocation, psychological trauma, and alienation which course through Kathryn Bigelow’s Oscar-winning Iraq War story, The Hurt Locker (2008). But among the comments the piece elicited was this one from “Anonymous”: “No No she needs to stay away from this movie (sic).”
Michael requested Anonymous to expand on that sentiment, and I, rather presumptuously, jumped in since I suspected I initially shared Anonymous’ reaction: that Oscar-winning directors of heavyweight material like The Hurt Locker don’t make comic book movies.
But then I kept mulling over Michael’s piece. I suppose a certain literary strata might snicker...
