The Daughters of Kim's Pharmacy

After an aggressive man lets his anger get the better of him, his wife takes her own life and he is forced to go on the run. The son he leaves behind grows up to have 4 daughters, but there is rumored to be a curse on his family. As the daughters find their way into relationships the curse seems to be true. Allegations of child murder, infidelity, forced into marriages with raging psychopaths. This film certainly isn't cheerful. The film is usually gripping, but has trouble with its pacing. Spending a long time on one character, before they up and leave, whilst other characters just have their fates mentioned in passing. The film paints a sorry picture for women, but the truthful look at life is quite refreshing. There is some debate over whether the women are fated to their outcomes or not. We see some of them try and break free and fail, some succeed, and some are just on a collision course with disaster. It's beautifully shot, but is missing some segments (as are many Korean films of the period). Interesting, but tiresome in its relentless cruelty.
