Former James Bond Daniel Craig, The Pianist Oscar winner Adrien Brody, Euphoria Emmy winner Colman Domingo, Marvel superhero turned Emmy nominee Sebastian Stan, consummate character actor Peter Sarsgaard and Oscar-nominated heartthrob Paul Mescal range in age from 28 (Mescal) to 56 (Craig); hail from around the world (America, England, Ireland and Romania); and forged very different paths to stardom. But they all share one thing in common: Each gave a standout performance in a 2024 film — or, in Stan’s case, two — that led to them congregating in mid-November at Soho House West Hollywood for THR‘s annual Actor Roundtable.
Their characters are unforgettable: a Jewish architect who survives the Holocaust and comes to America (Brody in The Brutalist); a gay American addict in 1950s Mexico (Craig in Queer); an incarceree who finds purpose in art (Domingo in Sing Sing); an angry young man set on destroying the city that betrayed him (Mescal...

September 5 director Tim Fehlbaum is opening up about why the now-Oscar contender was the next story he wanted to tell.
“It was the conversation that we — the producers, the writer and I — had with Geoffrey Mason, the real Geoffrey Mason, the character played by John Magaro,” Fehlbaum told The Hollywood Reporter at a special screening on the Paramount lot.
The film, which counts Sean Penn as one of its producers, chronicles the ABC Sports team at the 1972 Munich Olympics as they pivoted from sports reporting to live coverage of the Israeli athletes taken hostage in the Olympic Village. Peter Sarsgaard stars as legendary ABC executive Roone Arledge, while Magaro plays Mason, a young producer for the network’s Olympic coverage.

Peter Sarsgaard, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast — which was recorded in front of an audience at the Newport Beach Film Festival, where Sarsgaard was honored with the Film Performance of the Year Award — is a remarkable character actor who is enjoying the biggest year of his career. He shines in both the new Paramount film September 5, playing Roone Arledge as ABC Sports covers 1972 Munich Olympics terrorist attack, and on the new Apple TV+ drama series Presumed Innocent, as a prosecutor tasked with convicting a former colleague of a murder.

The journalism thriller has been a quintessential subgenre of American historical cinema for decades, with Alan J. Pakula’s classic “All The President’s Men” often heralded as the best example. The reason that this perspective holds so much value is simple; by looking back at the ways in which news professionals covered a certain event, it becomes easier for the filmmaker to explore the profound impact that historical milestones had in real time. “September 5” could have easily been misconstrued as an attempted parallel to the current political crisis that has divided the world, but instead it reveals itself to be a thrilling procedural that examines the challenges of breaking a live story.

Many Telluride Film Festival attendees prioritized, in the first days of this year’s fest, screenings of high-profile titles that already have distributors. But by Monday, more of them — us — were able to branch out a little bit and catch up on lesser-known titles that don’t yet have a backer. One such film, the fest’s second screening of which just let out at the Werner Herzog Theatre, is called September 5. (It had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival last Thursday and its North American premiere here last Saturday, shortly after which its relevance and timeliness was reinforced by tragic real-world events.) And here’s the kicker: it might be the strongest narrative film of the entire fest! It certainly left many festivalgoers — industry insiders and civilians — absolutely buzzing as they left the venue.

A hot sales title and potential Oscar contender is generating buzz on the festival circuit: Tim Fehlbaum’s tension-filled drama, “September 5.” If any studio feels like adding another worthy awards hopeful to its slate, this film could go far under the right guidance.
The film, which has received outstanding reviews at both Venice and Telluride, could make a significant impact given its timely and compelling story. Set on Sept. 5, 1972, it portrays the international hostage crisis involving the Israeli Olympic team, as it unfolded live on global television. However, the story is told from the perspective of the broadcasters. The period drama features a talented ensemble cast, including John Magaro, Peter Sarsgaard, Ben Chaplin and Leonie Benesch.
“September 5” is a taut, suspenseful thriller, and even if you’ve seen (and hopefully admired) Steven Spielberg’s “Munich” (2005), this retelling more than warrants its perspective, reminiscent of previous Oscar winners like “Spotlight” and “All the President’s Men.

It’s summer for celebrities, too, and Peter Sarsgaard just had his hands dirty with a hobby typical of the current season: gardening. On a recent August morning, the veteran star (who is also a beekeeper) broke away from “harvesting a bunch of perennials and annuals” at his New York home to hop on Zoom with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss the latest thing he harvested at his day job.
Sarsgaard is among the stars in Tim Fehlbaum’s September 5, a thrilling recreation of the terrorist attack on Israeli athletes during the 1972 Munich Olympics. Fehlbaum’s film, a selection of both the Venice Film Festival and Telluride, focuses on how the events played out inside a production hub in Munich and is told through the lens of the ABC Sports TV journalists who were covering it in real-time.
Sarsgaard talked to THR about his interest in history, playing a famous U.

Actors often have the difficult task of meeting each other on the same day that their characters are supposed to convey a sense of history between one another, so that’s precisely what makes the story of Ahsoka’s Rosario Dawson and Hayden Christensen all the more special.
In the summer of 1995, the two budding teenage actors attended drama school together at New York City’s Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, so Christensen was right there when Dawson’s career was established by way of Harmony Korine and Larry Clark’s provocative indie, Kids. Similarly, in 2002, Dawson caught up with Christensen in the middle of his Anakin Skywalker era, as they both filmed their respective roles on the set of Billy Ray’s Shattered Glass. Steve Zahn has joined Glen Powell in the upcoming Hulu comedy series “Chad Powers,” Variety has learned.
The series was originally picked up at Hulu in February. Powell will star in the series in addition to co-creating and co-writing the pilot with Michael Waldron, with both serving as executive producers. The show is based on the Chad Powers character created by Eli Manning for his Epsn+ docuseries “Eli’s Places.” Manning wanted to learn more about the walk-on process for college football, so he donned a wig and prosthetic makeup so he could go undercover during the Penn State football tryouts.
The official description for the series states, “When bad behavior nukes hotshot Qb Russ Holliday’s (Powell) college career, he disguises himself and walks onto a struggling Southern football team as the talented, affable Chad Powers.”
Zahn will play Jake Hudson, described as “the charismatic head coach of a flagging college football program.

Hayden Christensen is a widespread name in pop culture for his role as Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise. He featured in the second and the third installments of the Prequel Trilogy Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith before returning to his role in the Disney+ Star Wars shows Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka.
The Prequel Trilogy focused on Christensen’s Anakin Skywalker’s slow descent into the dark side until he ultimately becomes Darth Vader. Although the actor did a lot to make his performance as iconic as possible, Christensen’s work always resulted in a mixed reception among critics and fans.

“What looks at first to be remarkable, bizarre, will soon reveal itself to be part of a pattern,” sings Ethan Dobson (Ben Levi Ross), a just-out-of-Princeton wünderkind, at the start of the new musical The Connector, as he lands a coveted job writing features for a legendary magazine. And though he explains that the lyric is a quote from the venerated founder of the titular magazine, what’s quickly revealed is that it’s Ethan himself who’s remarkable, bizarre, and part of a pattern we’ll soon recognize all too well.
That pattern, especially as exposed under the blazing spotlight shone by Robin Martinez (Hannah Cruz), an overlooked female Latina staffer at the magazine and the musical’s blistering narrator, is nothing less than the patriarchy. “Half the stories of the world are left unwritten/Half the stories of the world are kept unread,” Robin protests in “Cassandra,” the...

In a devastating (but perhaps none too surprising) blow to Dad Cinema enthusiasts the world over, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's acclaimed true-story Nike drama "Air" was completely ignored by the Academy when Oscar nominations were announced earlier this week. However, if you were expecting the Oscar-winning duo/best buds to spend the immediate future licking their wounds and wallowing in self-pity, guess again. According to The Hollywood Reporter, they've instead gone and lined up their next project together -- an original crime thriller titled "Animals," which now has Netflix backing it.
Having previously gone under working titles like "The Animals of Los Angeles" and "Be Gentlemen," the new Affleck-Damon joint will see Damon starring and Affleck directing from a script by Connor McIntyre with revisions from "Shattered Glass" and "Captain Phillips" scribe Billy Ray. The plot involves (per THR) "a mayoral candidate and his wife whose son is kidnapped.

Many of us continue to bash the Star Wars prequel trilogy: it’s coarse and rough and irritating and – sorry, but that line and its delivery remain some of the worst in the entire saga. The hate for Jake Lloyd was one thing, but Hayden Christensen was a big boy and could handle it from the legion of Star Wars fans, no matter how dreadful the dialogue was. And to prove it, he reprised his role as Anakin Skywalker for Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka; and if given the chance, he would jump at even more opportunities to do so.
While Hayden Christensen expressed gratitude for being invited back into the Star Wars franchise for the Disney+ shows, he hopes it was just the beginning. “I would love to get to do more, and I’d love to get to continue with Star Wars and we’ll see. I don’t know what the future holds,...

Hayden Christensen, who has played Anakin Skywalker in various Star Wars movies and series, has signed with Independent Artist Group for representation.
The actor famously nabbed the coveted part of the heroic-yet-tragic young man who would become Darth Vader in George Lucas’ Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and concluded his fall from grace with Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.
Seventeen years later, he reprised his role for the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi, a massive hit for the streamer, and the recently finished Ahsoka, which also proved to be a hit.

Seventeen years later, he reprised his role for the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi, a massive hit for the streamer, and the recently finished Ahsoka, which also proved to be a hit.

To put it mildly, the Star Wars prequel trilogy was divisive. Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith was hyped up as the entry into the saga that would finally redeem the trilogy, as it would depict Anakin Skywalker’s seduction to the dark side and eventual transformation into Darth Vader. It was the first Star Wars movie to be given a PG-13 rating, as George Lucas and his crew promised that this was a much darker, more adult Star Wars tale than the rest of the prequel trilogy. Lucas was certainly right, with Revenge of the Sith ending the series on a dark, foreboding note, and to many, it remains a highlight of the prequel trilogy. Does that mean it ranks up there with the original films?
It’s hard to say because once you sit down and watch the whole thing, the prequel trilogy is very different from the originals.

In his 27th installment of Deadline Strike Talk, Billy Ray leans into the need for labor and studios to realize they must be partners willing to compromise, for this business to get past the strikes and rebound in the coming years. To illustrate the need to be changeable, Ray harkens back to his own 2003 directorial debut, Shattered Glass. He catches up with three vital collaborators who made invaluable contributions to the celebrated film — Mandy Walker, Jeff Ford, and Adam Merims — to discuss what has happened to our business since.

Jessica Chastain and Peter Sarsgaard have both officially entered the Oscar race for their extraordinary performances in Michel Franco’s “Memory.” However, the awards campaign has announced that Sarsgaard’s riveting turn as a man suffering from Alzheimer’s disease will be submitted for supporting actor consideration at the major ceremonies, including the Golden Globes, SAG and Academy Awards. His Oscar-winning co-star Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”) will vie for lead actress.
Written and directed by Franco, the film was recently acquired by Ketchup Entertainment for North American distribution and will receive an Oscar-qualifying run in December. It premiered at the 80th Venice Film Festival, where Sarsgaard received the Volpi Cup for best actor from the Jury, joining the ranks of past honorees such as Brad Pitt (“The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”) and River Phoenix (“My Own Private Idaho”). Just as it was beginning to look like the dance card for this season’s Oscar race was full, the release date for a highly acclaimed film that was not expected to drop until 2024 has been set for December 2023.
The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the North American distribution rights of Michel Franco‘s Memory, which stars Peter Sarsgaard and Oscar winner Jessica Chastain, have been acquired by Ketchup Entertainment, which will release it shortly before the end of the year.
Memory tells the story of Sylvia (Chastain), a social worker who leads a simple and structured life until Saul (Sarsgaard) follows her home from their high school reunion. Their surprise encounter profoundly impacts both of them and opens the door to memories, challenges and revelations that will leave a lasting impact.

Chicago – That’s a wrap! The 59th Chicago International Film Festival (Ciff) Closing Night is October 22nd, 2023, with “The Bikeriders,” which is set in Chicago and directed by Jeff Nichols, who will make an appearance on behalf of the film. Click Closing for info and tickets.
“The Bikeriders” is an immersive experience into the look, feel, and sounds of the subculture of ’60s motorcycle riders. Kathy (Jodie Comer), a strong-willed member of the Vandals who’s married to a wild, reckless bikerider named Benny (Austin Butler of “Elvis”), recounts the Vandals’ evolution over the course of a decade, beginning as a local club of outsiders united by good times, rumbling bikes, and respect for their strong, steady leader Johnny (Tom Hardy).

Actors with one outstanding performance can make a lasting impact, showcasing the profound influence of a singular role on their legacy. For example, Kate Hudson's portrayal of Penny Lane in Almost Famous exemplifies her acting prowess and arguably remains her best movie role to this day. Another example is Hayden Christensen's performance in Shattered Glass, which stands out among his other roles and remains his best movie role.
Actors who have only delivered one outstanding performance in their movie careers are a testament to the unpredictability of artistic journeys in the film industry. An actor having just one exemplary performance under their belt doesn't necessarily mean that they're bad at what they do, quite the contrary. It just means that they haven't outdone themselves in that particular role, the reason for which can boil down to a number of factors in the highly collaborative world of filmmaking.

It was bound to happen. As part of the promotional campaign for the new “Saw X,” due out Sept. 29, Lionsgate has released a parody video of the Nicole Kidman AMC Theatres commercial, featuring the little Jigsaw doll (and his tricycle) in place of Kidman and her sparkly suit. Watch it above.
The video sees Jigsaw riding up to Lionsgate, saying stuff like, “We come to theaters to scream, to beg, to play. That indescribable feeling you get when the lights flicker on and off and your calls for mercy go unanswered.”
Also: “Blood soaked blades on a silver screen. Fear I can feel. Somehow, self-amputation feels good in a place like this.”
It ends with a title card reading, “Traps – They Make Movies Better.”
The Nicole Kidman AMC Theatres ad, which began running in September 2021, was meant to be a way to bolster attendance after the Covid-19 pandemic had threatened the entire industry.

It’s time for Peter Sarsgaard to finally shatter the Oscar glass.
Once upon a time, actor Peter Sarsgaard won the most precursors prizes during the 2003-2004 awards season for his supporting turn in Billy Ray’s “Shattered Glass.” In the film, he plays Charles Lane, a newly promoted editor who suspects one of his revered writers (played by Hayden Christensen) could have fabricated some of his stories. It was a breakout performance in the early days of online Oscar punditry that had everyone buzzing. However, when it came time for the major televised ceremonies, he was only able to muster a Golden Globe nod, then to be followed by shocking snubs from SAG, BAFTA and eventually the Academy Awards.

Netflix has announced that Maggie Gyllenhaal, the Oscar-nominated actress and director of The Lost Daughter, will helm a remake of the classic horror film Bride of Frankenstein, titled The Bride. The film will star Christian Bale and Peter Sarsgaard as the creators of the titular character, who will be played by an unknown actress.
The Bride is based on the 1935 film directed by James Whale, which was a sequel to the 1931 film Frankenstein, both adapted from Mary Shelley’s novel. The original film followed the mad scientist Dr. Henry Frankenstein (Colin Clive) and his mentor Dr. Septimus Pretorius (Ernest Thesiger) as they attempt to create a female companion for the Monster (Boris Karloff), who escapes and seeks friendship in the world.

Since Deadline formed more than 15 years ago, we’ve never lost sight of the human struggles felt by writers and everyone else during labor standoffs. Today, we proudly launch Strike Talk with Billy Ray and Todd Garner, a weekly podcast dedicated to dissecting the issues that caused talks to break off between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, this week prompting the writers to trade their pencils for picket signs.
A reckoning is upon us as writers try to keep their place at a moment when studios and streamers struggle to impose economic efficiencies to show fiscal responsibility to their shareholders, and writers struggle with things like streaming deals that have no chance for backend compensation in success, and series that have far fewer than the 22 episodes that had been the norm on the traditional networks.

The talented cast of Hulu's Dopesick delves into the heartbreaking truth of the opioid crisis in the U.S., bringing those characters and real-life figures to life. Over the span of eight episodes, the miniseries focuses on the human aspect of the opioid epidemic, telling the stories of those whose lives were affected by OxyContin. OxyContin, which was released by Purdue Pharma in 1996, is a highly addictive painkiller that was misleadingly sold as non-addictive to doctors and patients alike. Trying to have a nuanced conversation about George Lucas' "Star Wars" prequels is a little like attempting to thread the Stone Needle in Beggar's Canyon on Tatooine. Thanks to the toxic fan discourse that sprung up around them, it's difficult to discuss these movies without wondering how much of your reaction is being colored by their rather complicated legacy -- both the good and the bad.
Take Hayden Christensen. At first, critics weren't exactly wowed by his turn as the man who would become Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker, in his moody young adult years. Then again, they weren't exactly wowed by any of the acting in Lucas' prequels. Roger Ebert, reviewing "Attack of the Clones" in 2002, wrote that the film's leads — Anakin, Padmé (Natalie Portman), and Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) — "seem so strangely stiff and formal in their speech that an unwary viewer might be excused for thinking they were the clones,...

Since the first Academy Awards in 1929, there have been more than 600 nominees in the category of Best Cinematography. The cinematographer, who’s responsible for a movie’s lighting, framing and camerawork, is the second-highest position on a film’s call sheet, after the director – and that fact might help to explain why it is historically the biggest boys’ club in the history of moviemaking.
Of those 600 nominees, three have been women.
One of them is Mandy Walker, nominated this year for her vibrant historical re-creations and dreamy, fantasia-like camerawork on Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis.” Walker, whose credits include “Shattered Glass,” “Hidden Figures,” Luhrmann’s “Australia” and “Mulan,” follows Rachel Morrison (2017’s “Mudbound”) and Ari Wegner (2021’s “The Power of the Dog”) as the only women ever nominated. Best Cinematography remains the sole award, aside from the male acting prizes, never won by a woman at the Oscars.

Mandy Walker’s work on “Elvis” has put the cinematographer in the spotlight thanks to both the texture and variety of its images, which range from scrupulous recreations of archival footage and dynamically lit musical numbers to hallucinatory evocations of 1970s Las Vegas that feel like something out of a horror film. Walker not only delivers, with gusto, on each seemingly diametrically opposed approach to the footage, she finds a balance and unity in them as director Baz Luhrmann plunges the audience into three subjective points of view: Elvis Presley’s, Colonel Tom Parker’s, and that of the culture at large. The result is a bold, original and visceral piece of cinematography that will quite possibly land Walker a well-deserved Oscar.

When I majored in journalism at Western Michigan University, my professors routinely showed movies in the classroom to complement their lesson plans. In my investigative journalism course, for example, one professor had us watch the 2015 biographical film "Spotlight," which is based on The Boston Globe's uncovering of a child sex abuse scandal committed by local Roman Catholic priests. When it came to lessons on the career-killers plagiarism and fabrication of sources, another professor showed the 2003 biographical drama "Shattered Glass," which recounts disgraced journalist Stephen Glass' professional demise after he fabricates stories for "The New Republic" magazine. The movie was a box office bomb, but if you have any interest in journalism or are a Hayden Christensen fan — he stars as Glass — I urge you to give it a watch.
Some years later, I came across another movie that tackles fabrication in journalism: 1987's "Street Smart," starring Christopher Reeve. Initially,...
