Conventional horror movies centered around werewolves often go heavy on special effects, showcasing the transformation from man to wolf and its subsequent uncontrollable slaughter. But the transformative aspect and dual nature of werewolves provide fertile ground for metaphor beyond their primal, animalistic urge to eviscerate everything in their path.
Out this week is The Beast Within, a werewolf movie with a fairy tale twist, framing its horror story from the perspective of a young girl discovering the truth about her afflicted father.
It’s the unconventional approach to werewolf lore that inspires this week’s streaming picks: five unconventional werewolf horror movies that defy easy categorization and use lycanthropy to explore historical horrors, the growing pains of youth, or simply loneliness.

“Scream” star Neve Campbell has boarded the Toronto Film Festival-bound documentary “Swan Song,” about the National Ballet of Canada, as an executive producer.
Campbell, who is Canadian, is expected to attend Toronto in support of the film, which follows the ballet company as it mounts a new production of “Swan Lake” directed by ballet icon Karen Kain on the eve of her retirement.
The documentary will screen as part of the festival’s Special Presentations program. TIFF announced its official lineup on Monday, promising an array of world premiere titles despite the SAG-AFTRA actors strike, which will likely impede its red carpets.
“Swan Song” is directed by Chelsea McMullan, who wrote the film with producer Sean O’Neill. Distributed in Canada by Blue Ice Docs, with international sales handled by Dogwoof, the documentary will be released theatrically in Canada on Sept. 22. The project was developed with CBC and will air as...

While Shanola Hampton is most known for her role on Shameless, the actress played a small but important part in the crime drama Criminal Minds. The hit police procedural crime drama centers around the Behavioral Analysis Unit (Bau), a specialized FBI team who profiles criminals. Criminal Minds ran for 15 seasons from 2005 to 2020 on CBS before it was revived for a sixteenth season, titled Criminal Minds: Evolution, on streaming service Paramount+. Like most long-running shows the drama has gone through multiple cast changes like when Shemar Moore left Criminal Minds in season 11 and stopped playing Agent Derek Morgan.
Some of the recurring and guest characters that appear on Criminal Minds are the family members and romantic partners of the main Bau team. Because of the dangerous nature of their work, the agents in the Bau often have complicated personal lives. Not only does Criminal Minds show the emotional complexities the agents...

In the 18 years since he made his TV acting debut on the Disney Channel series “Phil of the Future,” Evan Peters has appeared in a recurring or regular capacity on seven more shows, including nine installments of the anthology series “American Horror Story.” Now, he has at last succeeded in capturing the attention of his peers in the Screen Actors Guild with his performance on the HBO limited series “Mare of Easttown,” which just won him an Emmy last September. If he ends up taking home the Best TV Movie/Mini Actor prize, he will be the seventh actor to win it on his first-ever SAG bid and the first since Kevin Costner (“Hatfields & McCoys”) nine years ago.
Peters’s challengers in this contest are Murray Bartlett (“The White Lotus”), Oscar Isaac (“Scenes from a Marriage”), Michael Keaton (“Dopesick”), and Ewan McGregor (“Halston”). Like Peters, both Bartlett and Isaac are SAG newcomers.

Ewan McGregor has been singled out for the first time at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The actor is nominated for his performance in “Halston” as the eponymous fashion designer, marking his first individual bid with SAG-AFTRA. McGregor is also coming off his first Emmy win last September, laying claim to Best Limited Series Actor, with numerous additional nominations at other award shows. In order to win at SAG, however, he will have to defeat some tough competition.
Other SAG nominees in Best TV Movie/Mini Actor include Murray Bartlett (“The White Lotus”), Oscar Isaac (“Scenes from a Marriage”), Michael Keaton (“Dopesick”), and Evan Peters (“Mare of Easttown”). Bartlett, Isaac, and Peters are all making their SAG debuts, none of them even scoring an ensemble bid in the past. Michael Keaton might own the record for most film ensemble wins at the Screen Actors Guild Awards with three, but the once and future Batman is still looking for his first individual win across both film and television. It could come this year, though, as he’s been nominated for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor for his excellent turn as Dr. Samuel Finnix, a doctor in a Virginia mining town, in Hulu’s heartbreaking limited series “Dopesick.” The show, which was inspired by Beth Macy’s nonfiction book “Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors and the Drug Company That Addicted America,” tells the harrowing story of the opioid epidemic that crippled America, offering a raw but empathetic look at the men and women most affected by the crisis.
This is Keaton’s third individual nomination and second for TV. He was previously nominated in 2008 for his performance in the TNT miniseries “The Company.

Oscar Isaac has been one of the hottest actors of the past decade, starring in a number of acclaimed films and box office smashes. But it is only now that the actor is getting recognition from the Screen Actors Guild, for his soul-bearing performance in the HBO limited series “Scenes from a Marriage.” Isaac’s delicate work opposite Jessica Chastain landed him a nomination in Best TV Movie/Mini Actor at this year’s SAG Awards, where he stands a chance of winning on his first try.
Isaac is joined by two other first-timers in TV Movie/Mini Actor, both from HBO miniseries of their own — Murray Bartlett (“The White Lotus”) and Evan Peters (“Mare of Easttown”). The other two nominees have a decent SAG history including Ewan McGregor (“Halston”), who scores his first individual recognition after three ensemble bids for “Little Voice” (1998), “Moulin Rouge!” (2001), and “August: Osage County” (2013). Amidst the chaos of the flawed, self-involved characters on “The White Lotus,” Murray Bartlett‘s Armond emerges as a steadying anchor. This isn’t to say Armond isn’t flawed himself — a formerly drug-addicted hotel manager who is driven to use again after dealing with this bunch — but Bartlett delivers a charismatic, relatable performance that resonates with anyone who has worked with the public. Now, the longtime actor has finally been recognized by his peers at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, where he is nominated in the category of Best TV Movie/Mini Actor.
Bartlett is not the only first-time SAG nominee in his category. Oscar Isaac (“Scenes from a Marriage”) and Evan Peters (“Mare of Easttown”) join Bartlett as rookies, with Peters coming off an Emmy win for his performance. Michael Keaton already has three SAG Awards on his mantel, but he has yet to win for an individual performance. Instead, his trophies all came for being in the winning film ensembles of “Birdman,” “Spotlight” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” Might Keaton’s poignant performance in “Dopesick” finally be his ticket to an individual victory? His co-nominees at the Screen Actors Guild are Evan Peters (“Mare of Easttown”), Murray Bartlett (“The White Lotus”), Ewan McGregor (“Halston”) and Oscar Isaac (“Scenes from a Marriage”). Read on for my four reasons why I think Keaton should make room in his trophy case for his starring role in the Hulu limited series.

Watch out for Michael Keaton (‘Dopesick’) at the SAG Awards: He’s long overdue for an individual win
Michael Keaton is known for many things. Not only has he played a superhero, a supervillain and a devious poltergeist during his career, but he’s also the only person in history to win three film ensemble Screen Actors Guild Awards. Now he’s looking to add to his haul by potentially taking home his first individual SAG Award for his dramatic turn on Hulu’s “Dopesick.”

Hulu is moving ahead with Dopesick, an 8-episode limited series focused on America’s opioid crisis, brandishing promising marquee names in headliner Michael Keaton, Oscar-winning director Barry Levinson, Emmy-winning writer/showrunner Danny Strong and veteran Emmy-winning producer Warren Littlefield.

Hulu’s series, like the book, will focus on the ordeal of a Virginia mining town, with Keaton starring as Samuel Finnix, who’s described as “an old-school doctor who approaches his practice with kindness and compassion, but finds himself embroiled in Big Pharma’s deadly secret.” Yet, the series will also intersect “unsparing yet deeply human portraits” of families affected by the pill-pushing encroachment of monolithic companies, all while attempting to shine “a hopeful light” for the future. Hulu has given a straight-to-series order to Dopesick, an eight-episode limited series based on Beth Macy’s bestselling book, with Michael Keaton attached to star and executive produce. Barry Levinson is set to direct the project which hails from Empire co-creator/exec producer Danny Strong, The Handmaid’s Tale executive producer Warren Littlefield and Fox 21 Television Studios.
Written by Strong and slated to premiere in 2021, Dopesick is described as an ambitious, harrowing, and compelling look into the epicenter of America’s struggle with Opioid addiction. It takes viewers from a distressed Virginia mining community, to the hallways of the DEA, and to the opulence of “one percenter” Big Pharma Manhattan. The unsparing yet deeply human portraits of the various affected families and their intersecting stories hold up a mirror to where America is right now, while shining a hopeful light on the heroes battling the worst drug epidemic in American history.

Barry Jenkins has kept busy in quarantine, as IndieWire learned during an Instagram live discussion with the Oscar-winning “Moonlight” filmmaker last month. He’s been sheltering with his partner, fellow filmmaker Lulu Wang, and continuing work on “The Underground Railroad” series as best he can remotely. He’s also busily devouring movies, just like the rest of us, and the filmmaker recently shared eight movies he recommends streaming during quarantine with The Atlantic’s David Sims.
Among his picks is Steven Soderbergh’s science-fiction film “Solaris,” adapted from the Stanislaw Lem novel, currently streaming on Starz. The misunderstood, 2002 romantic drama follows George Clooney as a psychologist who gets more than he bargained for when he’s sent to outer space.

Altman's Editor Peroni in Suicide Mystery
American film editor Geraldine Peroni died at her New York home on Tuesday after reportedly committing suicide. She was 51. The city's medical examiner's office ruled the movie maker - who frequently worked with director Robert Altman - had killed herself, however her family are disputing that finding. Peroni was due to edit the new Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal film Brokeback Mountain later this year. Peroni worked on eight Altman films, including Vincent And Theo, Dr T And The Women and The Company. Altman says, "Her death is a big loss. She made my work so easy. She reads me better than anybody had ever read me, and, consequently, she did the work; I didn't have to. So it was a wonderful situation. But those things don't last." During her 20 year film career, she was nominated for an Academy Award and a BAFTA award for The Player.

Campbell to bring Brooks story to film
Neve Campbell is gearing up for a starring turn as the silent-film star-turned-elusive actress Louise Brooks. Campbell has purchased Peter Nickowitz and Bill Oliver's screenplay Lulu as a starring vehicle for herself. The script tells the life story of Brooks, who was born in 1906 in Kansas. She went on to star in more than two dozen films, most notably Pandora's Box, A Girl in Every Port and Beggars of Life. Known for her strong-willed ways -- and her trendsetting bobbed hair -- Brooks then moved to Germany, where she starred in several German productions. It was in Europe that she became a recluse, hiding away from the public eye until she was rediscovered in her later years after she was given a typewriter that she used to write a series of essays about her life. The beginning of Campbell's project finds Brooks in her solitude and then traces back the story of her life. It is known that Campbell has wanted to do a film about Brooks for many years. She will now be looking for a director and financier. Campbell is repped by ICM, manager Arlene Forster at her Forster Entertainment and attorney Steve Younger at Manatt, Phelps and Phillips. She next stars in Robert Altman's The Company, which she produced based on her own original idea. Campbell's other upcoming projects include Blind Horizon, with Val Kilmer, Churchill: The Hollywood Years, with Christian Slater, and James Toback's When Will I Be Loved. The writers are repped by attorney Eric Brooks at Bloom, Hergott & Diemer.
