Bernard Cribbins, the veteran British actor who narrated The Wombles and starred in the popular film adaptation of The Railway Children, has died. He was 93.

Cribbins’ agent, Gavin Barker Associates, confirmed the news to Deadline in a statement.

“Beloved actor Bernard Cribbins OBE has passed away at the age of 93. His career spanned seven decades with such diverse work ranging from films like The Railway Children and the Carry On series, hit 60’s song Right Said Fred a notorious guest on Fawlty Towers and narrating The Wombles,” the statement read. “He worked well into his 90s, recently appearing in Doctor Who and the CBeebies series Old Jack’s Boat. He lost his wife of 66 years, Gill, last year.”

Sparked by Alan Rickman's turn as Hans Gruber in Die Hard at the back end of the 1980s, many movie villains were either Brits, or in the case of Cliffhanger, John Lithgow taking on the mannerisms of a British antagonist.

The Walking Dead star David Morrissey has partnered with a trio of established TV and film producers to launch his own drama and documentary indie.

The actor – who has also starred in British dramas such as State Of Play and The Driver – has set up On The Corner with Complicit producer Jolyon Symonds, Senna director Asif Kapadia and James Gay-Rees, who produced Banksy doc Exit Through The Gift Shop.

The company has been established to produce high-end British drama, comedy, feature docs and factual series. It has also struck a development and distribution deal with BBC Worldwide, which will have first look at the indie’s slate.

Morrissey, who is speaking at Broadcast’s Production & Post Forum, said he wanted to have more creative control over the projects in which he stars. He would also like to develop projects in which he doesn’t appear.

Nigel Cole has signed on to direct Daylight Robbery.

The Made in Dagenham director will tackle Exclusive Media's action comedy, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The film will centre around a group of feisty retirees struggling to help a friend on the brink of losing their home.

They hatch a plan to rob the bank that refused to give her financial aid.

Cole will reunite with his Calendar Girls writer Tim Firth on the project.

The director's other films include Saving Grace and A Lot Like Love. Firth's writing credits include Confessions of a Shopaholic, Blackball and Kinky Boots.

Daylight Robbery is currently casting and will shoot in 2014.

British comedian Mel Smith, who directed The Tall Guy and the first Mr Bean movie, has died.

The comic actor and writer was best known in the UK for his work on sketch shows Alas Smith and Jones and Not the Nine O’Clock News. His agent confirmed he died at his home in London on Friday [July 19] of a heart attack.

His comedy partner was Griff Rhys Jones with whom he set up independent television company Talkback Productions in 1981. The company, which was sold to Pearson for £62m in 2000, produced series such as Da Ali G Show, I’m Alan Partridge and The Apprentice.

After taking roles in movies including National Lampoon’s European Vacation and The Princess Bride, Smith made his feature directorial debut in 1989 with The Tall Guy. The romantic comedy also marked the screenwriting debut of Richard Curtis and starred Jeff Goldblum, Emma Thompson and Rowan Atkinson.

Some really sad news to report. The actor, writer and director Mel Smith has died, at the age of 60. The news has now been officially confirmed by the BBC. A heart attack is believed to be the cause of his death.

Smith sprung to fame in the groundbreaking and hugely influential Not The Nine O'Clock News, and then he joined up with Griff Rhys-Jones for a long running and fruitful partnership, the highlight of which being Alas Smith And Jones. The pair's monologues were so popular, they even become part and parcel of the annual build up to the F.A. Cup Final. They also joined together for the movie of Tom Sharpe's Wilt.
