Remake of 1996 Japanese movie with the same title, different writer (based on the original), and different director.
Richard Gere trained with legendary Australian choreographer John "Cha Cha" O'Connell, working three hours a day for four months before shooting. Jennifer Lopez began her career as a dancer and needed no additional training.
During his visit to India for an AIDS awareness event in 2007, Gere danced with Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty on stage, performing his ballroom dance routine from this movie. He ended it by kissing Shetty on the cheek. As India has a very conservative culture, with even their own romantic films never ending in a kiss of any type, this caused an outrage. Some citizens protested against the act, saying it went against their culture. Shortly after, a court issued an arrest warrant for both Gere and Shetty for public obscenity. Neither was apprehended.
