New York-based conglomerate Big Media has signed with Rctv International Corp. to become the exclusive distribution partner to parent company Rctv’s catalog for Fast and AVOD platforms worldwide.

Under the terms of the agreement, Big Media will distribute over 7,000 hours of telenovelas to streaming platforms around the world. It will also serve as the exclusive distributor of Rctv’s catalogue for all forms of broadcast in Europe and Asia.

“Our partnership with Rctv International is one of the most significant in our company’s 14-year history. Rctv’s catalog of telenovelas is unparalleled, both in terms of quality and quantity,” said Juan Fernández, Big Media’s head of Latin America and Spanish-speaking U.S. distribution.

Filmmaker Daniel Barnz (Cake) has been tapped to write and direct Valentina, ABC Family’s adaptation of the Rctv telenovela Mi Gorda Bella Valentina, executive produced by Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment (Chasing Life) and Jorge Granier of Rctv International (Jane The Virgin). ABC Family is wanting to capture Ugly Betty‘s telanova turned comedy, but they also love Revenge. So they found a happy medium with My Sweet Fat Valentina. The original telanova is called Mi Gorda Bella Valentina. The show will follow Valentina who is now a young adult who returns years after her mother is killed. She is set on taking back her family’s company, but decides that a fake version of herself is needed. No word on who will star or when it will premier.

I have to say that I am loving this idea. Hopefully ABC Family will allow it to be funny. I think that would be one way on making it a hit, more so than the drama side. However, I understand that they will want to milk that part out. But we can still hope for a little fun, right?
