Netflix’s new faith-based movie, Mary, directed by D.J. Caruso and executive produced by megachurch pastor Joel Osteen, was destined to stir controversy. The film, which tells the story of Jesus’ birth from Mary’s perspective, featuring big action sequences and dramatic, suspenseful set pieces, fills in the gaps of the […]

Longlegs became one of the most talked about horror movies of the year, leading to many fans seeking out other movies with a similar vibe. Starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage, the movie is a gripping story of an FBI agent on the trail of a serial killer only to discover some unsettling occult clues as she digs deeper into the case. From the intrigue over Cage's mysterious role in the movie to the talk of the shocking moments, Longlegs became a subject of fascination for audiences.
Something the movie does so effectively it combines the elements of the crime and horror genres. From Monroe's grounded hero digging into a case to the terror and mystery surrounding Nicolas Cage's character, these elements combine wonderfully, feeling unique but also bringing to wind other movies to pull off the approach as well. Horror-crime films are in a subgenre that isn't talked about enough,...

Beloved actor Gena Rowlands has died at the age of 94, it has been confirmed. The star – best known for films like A Woman Under The Influence and Gloria, directed by her husband John Cassavetes – was renowned for her raw and uncompromising performances, making an indelible impact on cinema often while working outside of the Hollywood studio system. Rowlands passed away at home, following a previous diagnosis of Alzheimer’s.
While Rowlands made her big-screen debut in 1958’s The High Cost Of Loving, her cinematic collaborations with Cassavetes as director began in 1963 with A Child Is Waiting – and continued through the likes of 1968’s Faces, 1971’s Minnie And Moskowitz, 1974’s A Woman Under The Influence, 1977’s Opening Night, 1980’s Gloria, and 1984’s Love Streams. Their work together marked early examples of independent cinema. A Woman Under The Influence – for which Rowlands won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Oscar...

The episode of Revisited covering Sinister was Written, Edited, and Narrated by Kier Gomes, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Something’s up in suburbia again. And this time- it’s something sinister. When it comes to horror movies, we all have our preferences in terms of style and sub-genre. Some of us favor a nice haunted house, while others may be looking for a creepy found footage piece, or even the occasional possession situation. In either case, you may find a taste of what you’re looking for in today’s episode where we take a retrospective look at a fun horror film with more punch packed into it than you may have expected. A movie that twists and ties different types of spooky into a small and intimate story about a struggling writer who may have just uncovered the ugly truth...

The The Watcher episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Adam Walton, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
The late 1990s and early 2000s had an interesting subgenre of films come forward and be popular, a sort of serial killers versus cops thing that had a few entries including Copycat, The Bone Collector, Kiss the Girls, Taking Lives, and The Watcher (watch it Here). There was something about them that was on the edge of horror, but not so far into the genre that general audiences would skip out. They were often marketed as thrillers to avoid the word horror as if it were a bad, evil word. Most of them starred big names and familiar faces and had a variety of locations. There was a connective link between all of these,...

Nice vistas and a scenery-chewing Famke Janssen aren’t enough to save this absurd scriptural rehash from movie hell
The latest from evangelical Christian producers Pinnacle Peak – formerly Pure Flix, the money behind the surprisingly enduring God’s Not Dead series – is an adaptation of a Francine Rivers novel that remaps the biblical tale of Hosea on to a western goldrush setting. That synopsis suggests a level of creative imagination and ambition, possibly something like Michael Winterbottom hauling The Mayor of Casterbridge further west for 2000’s The Claim. Yet this movie thinly scatters a parable’s worth of plot across 134 minutes and resembles HBO’s Deadwood recut for Sunday-school purposes: pious, puzzling and punitive, with a sternly wagging finger never far from entering the frame.
Let us give Pinnacle Peak this: they’re getting mildly more sophisticated about delivering The Message. DJ Caruso, a studio director of the mid-00s thrillers Taking Lives and Disturbia,...

NBC crime drama The Blacklist has defied prognosticators, managing to be renewed for what will be its eighth season.
The Blacklist Season 8 is officially set at NBC, which has renewed the veteran crime thriller series in spite of the proverbial circling vultures of cancelation.
Yes, the increasingly circuitous saga of The Blacklist is confirmed to continue for at least another season, presumably extending its life into the 2020-2021 season. The move continues the ongoing saga of enigmatic antihero “Concierge of Crime,” Raymond Reddington (James Spader), the world’s most-wanted criminal who – unbeknownst to the general public – enjoys an immunity deal with the F.B.I. in exchange for leads about his vast array of criminal contacts (the titular Blacklist), frequently shadowed by special agent Elizabeth Keen (Megan Boone), who, as revealed later in the series, happens to be the daughter he conceived with a deadly Russian spy.

Exclusive: A feature film about Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo, who was named the NBA’s Mvp in June, is in the works for Disney+.
The upcoming streaming service has put Greek Freak (w/t), which will look at Antetokounmpo’s early life and current career, into development from Disney’s live-action film division.
Deadline understands that former Disney and Village Roadshow Pictures exec Bernie Goldman, who produced Zack Snyder’s 300, will produce from a script from Arash Amel, writer of Rosamund Pike and Jamie Dornan’s A Private War.
Antetokounmpo had an interesting early life; he was born in Athens, Greece as the son of Nigerian immigrants. However, due to Greek laws, he did not automatically receive full Greek citizenship and was effectively stateless until he was 18.
He started out playing in the Greek basketball league before moving to Spanish team Cai Zaragoza. In 2013, he made himself available for the...

The Telluride Film Festival is about a lot more than Oscars. Co-directors Tom Luddy and Julie Huntsinger certainly set out to program the year’s likeliest Oscar contenders, including Joe Wright’s Gary Oldman vehicle “Darkest Hour,” Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird,” starring Saoirse Ronan, Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water,” starring Sally Hawkins, and “Battle of the Sexes,” starring a luminous Emma Stone as real-life hero Billie Jean King.
But Telluride was also a crucible for conversations about the state of the motion picture industry throughout the weekend, as Netflix and Amazon threw parties and checked out several high-profile movies without distribution — including Francis Ford Coppola’s musically-enhanced “The Cotton Club Encore” — that banked on the festival boosting their critical and audience cred before top buyers.
Here’s what we learned over the Labor Day weekend:

Netflix has announced the list of films that will be available to stream in July. The list includes new never-before-seen original films, as well as documentaries, comedies, animated titles and some classic movies. Check out some of our favorite new offerings below, along with the complete list of all the new additions.

1. “To the Bone” (available July 14)
Marti Noxon’s feature directorial debut was a hit out of Sundance, where the Lily Collins-starring drama about eating disorders won over audiences for its nimble ability to tell a compelling dramatic story interspersed with well-earned humor. Sketched from Noxon’s own experiences with anorexia and bolstered by a star turn from the always-reliable Collins, the film is both important and entertaining, and it should be able to reach a very wide audience on the streaming platform. Do not miss it.
2. “Punch-Drunk Love” (available July 1)
Paul Thomas Anderson’s lauded 2002 romantic dramedy features Adam Sandler in one of his few “hey, this guy can really act!” roles and includes some of the auteur’s most indelible shots and richest observations about life and love. It’s a modern classic, and now it can be piped right into your home. I’m lookin’ at your Netflix queue and I just wanna smash it. I just wanna fuckin’ smash it with a sledgehammer and squeeze it. It’s so pretty.
3. “Chasing Coral” (available July 14)
Jeff Orlowski won the U.S. Documentary Audience Award at Sundance earlier this year for his newest feature, a stunning documentary about the fight to protect coral reefs from becoming extinct. Featuring breathtaking and distressing underwater footage, the movie puts into perspective just how endangered coral reefs are and tracks the effort to save them.
4. “Lion” (available July 9)
This heart-wrenching true story was an awards season juggernaut earlier this year, featuring stellar turns from Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel. Based on the unbelievable life of young Saroo Brierley, the feature follows his separation from his family and his startling trip back to them many years later, aided by — for real — Google Maps and his own indomitable heart. Bring tissues.
5. “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (available July 18)
The very first standalone “Star Wars” spinoff follows a motley crew of rogues, criminals, rebels, and scallawags as they attempt to steal the plans to the monstrous Death Star in a bid to really just totally stick it to the Empire and Darth Vader. Knowing how it ends — they get them! and…some other stuff, too! — doesn’t dilute its tension and creativity, and it features a banger of an ensemble cast. Let this one tide you over before the next entry in the rapidly expanding movie universe.
6. “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (available July 1)
The early part of the month is heavy on kid-leaning classics, from “Free Willy” to “The Mighty Ducks,” but it’s hard to top the potency of Steven Spielberg’s 1982 classic. Gather the whole family around the TV and get heavy on the Reese’s Pieces, and enjoy one of the best films ever made about childhood, friendship, and letting go.

A doctor struggles to control his bloodthirsty urges in the E3 trailer for Dontnod’s Vampyr, a new action horror video game set in the early 20th century and slated for a 2017 release on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC:
“Vampyr, the new Action-rpg from acclaimed game-development studio Dontnod, explores protagonist Jonathan Reid’s moral plight in the E3 trailer. Set in London, 1918, Vampyr promises to offer a unique and deeply immersive experience with a strong and engaging narrative steeped in vampire mythology. The E3 trailer unveiled today introduces the nightmare your hero must live every day now he has become a real monster.
You play as a veteran of World War I, Doctor Jonathan Reid as he tries to come to terms with his transition, and the hunger that drives him to kill. Vampyr includes a unique level-up system that plays on this narrative conundrum, where huge amounts of experience points can be gained by feeding on innocent people, compared to combat. As a doctor, you must decide how many lives must be sacrificed in order for you to find a cure for this “disease”, the ultimate goal of Jonathan.
Taking lives in London is not easy. Killing too many in a district may cause its infrastructure to collapse and turn into disarray. Every single life will also have a butterfly effect on the other NPCs surrounding them; a merchant’s wife could be killed and he could decide to close shop and leave town. Every life you take away will have consequences for the city and the people around them: Cursed be the choice!
Vampyr comes out on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC in 2017.”

Fans of the G.I. Joe films are probably still left wondering if a third entry into the lucrative toy film franchise is on the horizon. Well, after a bit of a dry period on news, it appears that this wayward ship of a third film may now be back on course with a new director. This could also mean a huge role for a certain member of the Joe team. After a game of musical chairs which saw the exit of last entry head Jon M. Chu for Jem and the Holograms, and failed negotiations with Martin Campbell, it looks like D.J. Caruso is set to take the helm of the Hasbro toy franchise film. Caruso, director of the 2004 Angelina Jolie vehicle Taking Lives, was also responsible for Shia Labeouf.s early hits Disturbia and Eagle Eye, the 2011 young adult "hot teens with superpowers" genre film, I Am ...

He then reflected on what it was like to work alongside Jolie over ten years ago, before she had even started her romance with now-husband Brad Pitt. Did you watch last night's pilot episode of "The Blacklist"c Did you like itc Personally I found it to be a sloppy, cheaply made mess and was astonished to learn Joe Carnahan (Narc, The Grey) not only produced it, but directed it on what I can only assume was a shoestring budget based on how plastic and low-rent each set piece and location felt. To begin, what was with the plastic box James Spader's Raymond 'Red' Reddington was being kept in and what was with the 30-second opening of the boxc Watch the clip above and just as the extra walks across the screen around the 20-second mark as the box begins sliding just a bit quicker as if someone on the production was yelling, "Move faster! This is taking forever!" Reddington had just surrendered (to an army of men pointing guns and rifles for some reason) and...

How would you like to see the first episode of NBC’s new TV show, The Blacklist?
For decades, ex-government agent Raymond “Red” Reddington (James Spader, “The Office,” “Boston Legal”) has been one of the FBI’s most wanted fugitives. Brokering shadowy deals for criminals across the globe, Red was known by many as “The Concierge of Crime.” Now, he’s mysteriously surrendered to the FBI with an explosive offer: He will help catch a long-thought-dead terrorist, Ranko Zamani, under the condition that he speaks only to Elizabeth “Liz” Keen (Megan Boone, “Law & Order: Los Angeles”), an FBI profiler fresh out of Quantico. For Liz, it’s going to be one hell of a first day on the job.
What follows is a twisting series of events as the race to stop a terrorist begins. What are Red’s true intentions? Why has he chosen Liz, a woman with whom he seemingly has no connection?...

It's an important week in on-screen lady-cop history. First, The Heat was released in theaters last Friday, and it made almost $40 million — nearly the flick's entire budget — in three days. So it's finally been proven that the ladies can go head to head with the fellas when it comes to buddy-cop comedies. But there's more big news in the world of female law enforcement officers in movies and TV. Friday sees the Reelz premiere of the police drama King. In honor of the confident and sassy Staff Sergeant Jessica King, played by Amy Price-Francis, we thought we'd choose our top ten favorite actresses to have played law enforcement officials from television and the big screen. Take a look and see if your favorites made the cut.

Mention of Ethan Hawke's name might conjure up some of his critically lauded performances in movies such as Reality Bites, Training Day or Before Sunrise. You might associate him with his successful stage career, or his two well-received novels, or the documentary he made last year about Shakespeare's Scottish Play.
Yet since the very beginning of his career, Hawke has made occasional - and often excellent - forays into science fiction, thrillers and horror. His first screen role was in Joe Dante's 1985 sci-fi fantasy Explorers, in which he played a young boy who, along with his friend Wolfgang (the late River Phoenix) creates a spaceship and heads off on an intergalactic adventure. Ethan Hawke might not be the biggest movie star on the planet, but the man is without question one of the most consistent actors working today, and he elevates that reputation considerably with his fantastic work on Before Midnight, which is released in UK cinemas today (it’s amazing… my glowing praise of the film is Here).
If Hawke is an actor unafraid of both challenging artistic pursuits and straight-up genre fare, this has occasionally caused his career to suffer a few momentary blips, though as is often the case, it is most often a poor script that gives the actor little to work with than him outright flopping on his own.
Thankfully for every Taking Lives, Hawke has at least a few Gattaca’s, and so he’s able to weather the storm with considerable ease. From Oscar nominations to critical beat-downs, here are Ethan Hawke’s 5 awesome performances,...

In one version of the world, Ethan Hawke and Owen Wilson could have had nearly identical careers.
Both Texas-born and vets of the Austin indie filmmaking scene of the mid-90s, the two actors have since floated through independent, art house, and mainstream projects to varying degrees of success. Hawke, for the most part, stayed indie while Wilson went big. They are the story of Generation-x: Former malcontents grasping for authenticity and fame in an industry that is designed to make those dual aspirations somewhat impossible.

Goodness gracious, what would Brad Pitt think?!

Ethan Hawke was a guest on "Watch What Happens Live" earlier this week and, among other things, shared steamy details about his past co-star -- one of the most desirable women in the world, Angelina Jolie.
The two starred in the thriller "Taking Lives" together almost a decade ago, but Hawke says Jolie -- now a mother six and engaged to Brad Pitt -- made herself very memorable. "My best onscreen kiss was with Angelina Jolie," he confessed, as the rest of the show's guests oohed and aahed.
"What made it so great?," asked him host Andy Cohen. "Pillowy lips, a lot of tongue ... What?"
"Why is Amadeus, Wolfgang Mozart, a genius?" said Hawke. "I'm talking... Angelina Jolie was born to whittle men, to make them weak. And when she kisses you, you don't know your name."
Just saying what we're all thinking, Ethan!

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the first announced today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on NBC.
The Peacock did not have a good year. Only one of its new shows, "Revolution," was a true hit. Another, "Chicago Fire," got renewed by the skin of its teeth whilst the fate of a third, "Hannibal," remains uncertain.
None of last year's new comedies survived, neither did two mid-season dramas, which leaves the network with some big holes to fill. Three dramas and three comedies will debut in the Fall ahead of three more dramas and two comedies mid-season. Two further dramas and a comedy are presently unscheduled.
Several other pilots didn't make the final cut and won't become series including the high-profile Charlize Theron-produced drama about the Hatfields and McCoys, the Bruckheimer-produced...

The new fall season is closer than you think, and NBC has released their full schedule. Apart from reality favorites The Biggest Loser and The Voice, they are mixing things up quite a bit.
Take a look at a complete preview of the shows coming your way, and mark your calendars. It looks good for NBC this year, and while I’m not sure all of these look like winners, I think you’ll find at least a couple that you’re really going to like.
Blacklist – Fall

For decades, ex-government agent Raymond “Red” Reddington (James Spader) has been one of the FBI’s most wanted fugitives. Brokering shadowy deals for criminals across the globe, Red was known by many as “The Concierge of Crime.”
Now, he’s mysteriously surrendered to the FBI with an explosive offer: he will help catch a long-thought-dead terrorist, Ranko Zamani,...

James Spader returns to NBC with "The Blacklist" on this fall.
The "Office" alum and longtime "Boston Legal" star returns to the spotlight on the Peacock network and this time, instead of upholding the law (albeit via blackmail, bribery and the like), he's breaking it. In NBC's upcoming series "The Blacklist," Spader stars as Raymond “Red” Reddington, the most wanted man in the world.
Check out Spader and his devilish ways below in NBC's new four-minute trailer for "The Blacklist", as well as two new preview clips, and scroll down for more previews and official descriptions of the new series on NBC's 2013-2014 schedule: the “Ironside" remake starring Blair Underwood, the new Mike O'Malley comedy "Welcome To The Family," Sean Hayes' return to sitcoms with "Sean Saves The World," and, of course, the highly-anticipated "Michael J. Fox Show."

Chicago – When you’re in as much of a ratings struggle as NBC, it makes sense to shake things up and that’s exactly what they’re doing in the Fall with a new show or an old show in a new time every single night of the week. “Chicago Fire,” “Revolution,” “The Biggest Loser,” “Parks and Recreation,” and “Parenthood” are moving. “Community” is being held until a midseason, 13-episode run. No decision yet made on “Celebrity Apprentice” or “Hannibal,” which isn’t that surprising as they are mid-season shows anyway although it shouldn’t give fans of either program confidence as NBC announced a midseason schedule as well and they’re not on it. Anything could still happen with either program however and they could be held as replacements for shows that fail. That may be the best shot for “Hannibal” fans now. The best new show on the...

NBC's action pilot "The Blacklist" has set Emmy winner James Spader to star in the lead role that was previously offered to Kiefer Sutherland.
Spader will play one of the world's most wanted criminals who inexplicably offers to work with a brand new FBI agent (played by "Law & Order: La" alumna Megan Boone) and inform on all of his underworld associates.
The concept comes from "Taking Lives" screenwriter Jon Bokenkamp. It had been reported that NBC was pursuing Sutherland for the starring role, since the former "24" leading man's current show, "Touch," continues to struggle in the ratings.
But with Spader, "The Blacklist" has found another respected and well-known star with an established track record on the small screen. Spader won an Emmy for playing Alan Shore on "The Practice" before the character was spun off on "Boston Legal," which brought Spader three more Emmy nominations and two wins.

In another bad sign for Fox's all-but-dead drama "Touch," NBC has reportedly offered star Kiefer Sutherland a lead in the action pilot "The Black List."
According to EW, Sutherland would play one of the world's most wanted criminals who inexplicably offers to work with a brand new FBI agent and inform on all of his underworld associates.
The concept comes from "Taking Lives" screenwriter Jon Bokenkamp.
Although Fox has made no official decision on the future of "Touch," Season 2 of the show has been averaging a pitiful 3.15 million viewers and a 0.85 in the adults 18-49 demo on Friday nights. Even worse, the audience has been declining every week.
Those numbers are way below the already disappointing Season 1 averages: 7.55 million viewers and 2.2 in adults 18-49.

Olivier Martinez has reportedly been ordered to clean up his restaurant. The French 'Taking Lives' actor - who is pressing charges against Canadian model Gabriel Aubry after they got into a violent fight on Thanksgiving morning (22.11.12) outside his fiancee Halle Berry's home - partly owns the well known eatery Villa Azur in Miami, Florida, which was cited for twenty violations during a routine inspection on November 16. According to The Miami Herald newspaper, State inspectors uncovered 13 violations marked critical or 'likely to directly contribute to food contamination and illness.' The violations included fish being served raw without undergoing parasite destruction, food being thawed in standing water, chopping boards being placed on the floor, food...

It was a night of admissions on Watch What Happens Live yesterday as Ethan Hawke and Liam Neeson appeared in support of their new films (hey gays and girls, go see Sinister and Taken 2, will ya?) by participating in a much dreaded round of Plead The Fifth.
