Jeremy Renner has tasted great success juggling between character-driven dramas and big studio blockbusters. Before his Avengers fame, the actor starred in many compelling drams like Dahmer, Neo Ned, 28 Weeks Later, and The Hurt Locker where he showed off his incredible acting chops. He went on to star in the MCU and the Mission Impossible franchise.

He returned to the world of indie dramas with 2017’s Wind River, which was directed by Taylor Sheridan. Renner had a great working relationship with Sheridan on that film that he didn’t even feel the need to read the script of Mayor of Kingstown, and blindly trusted the filmmaker to give him another banger.

Guion The Lion, an inspirational children’s book that celebrates the differences in all children through a colorful and exciting journey, is now available on Audible just in time for World Down Syndrome Day (3/21).
Actor and singer Jeremy Renner, best known for playing Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, has volunteered to narrate the highly praised book after meeting author Rebecca Wilson Macsovits and her son Guion, who happens to have Down syndrome, at the Avengers: Endgame premiere. Guion, who is also the inspiration behind the book, formed a connection with the actor, making it a natural step for Renner to lend his voice to the project.
“Guion is a role-model. When we met, I knew he was an incredible young man and I instantly connected with him. When I found out that he was the idea behind his mother’s children book, Guion The Lion, I knew it was going to be special,...

On its surface, and in its most basic form, Neo Ned might sound like a Monsters Ball retread - a young black single mother gets romantically involved with a racist white man. But will digging further reveal more? The titular Ned (played by Jeremy Renner) is laden with enough emotional baggage to totally destroy any human soul. As a child, he saw his racist, irresponsible father incarcerated indefinitely; he's shopped from one foster home to the next, including one suicidal family, who almost kill him. Ned never quite had a real family, and like most young adults with his history and desires, he clings to any group that wants and accepts him - even if it's made up of neo-Nazi skinheads...

It’s not quite Halle Berry in Monsters Ball, nor Gabrielle Union in Neo Ned… by that I mean she doesn’t fall in love with a racist, but she does fall in love with the son of a racist – specifically the son of the leader of a “ruthless Aryan prison gang,” (played by Ed Harris).
The synopsis indicates that he’s not his father’s son, as he dreams of a fresh start, after returning home from prison, where he spent 5 years. His girlfriend leaves him with their son and disappears, he is forced to assume the enormous debt of his best friend, who owes a local mobster (played by Peter Weller), all of which thrusts him back into the “dangerous world of underground bare knuckle fighting, drug dealing and police corruption.”
But, as chance would have it (his name is Chance, by the way), he meets Pearl (played...

O.K. I can’t lie. There’s no way in the world I wouldn’t want to see any movie with Halle Berry with her tattays hanging out. But that does bring up the question: whatever happened to her indie film Frankie and Alice, shot a year and half ago in Vancouver?
The images of her walking around topless on the streets for a scene, hit the ‘net back then, but nothing has been heard of the film since. It’s never seen the light of day so far to date, though MsWOO did mention the film in a piece she wrote last October, literally a year after the movie was shot. I couldn’t even find a review of it anywhere. The film was obviously designed to be Halle’s second shot for an Oscar nomination, but it looks like that ain’t gonna happen.

Like most of the moviegoing free world, I was thrilled to hear that The Hurt Locker star Jeremy Renner was nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award. Renner clearly gave the most compelling and engaging performance of the year and hopefully the nomination will propel him from “Isn’t he the guy from …?” status to regular leading man.
While I’ll be rooting for Renner, sadly I think he’ll lose out to Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart, another deserving performance, but in an otherwise lousy movie. At least The Hurt Locker is a great film and one of the most visually inventive mainstream films of 2009. I’m rooting for the film in general, especially a Best Director win for Kathryn Bigelow.
But enough prognosticating. While Jeremy Renner hasn’t been in anything I would personally call an “underground” film, he does have a connection to the underground film world covered regularly on Bad Lit.

Aura's 'Executioner' targets Renner
Jeremy Renner, who recently starred in Columbia Pictures' actioner S.W.A.T., has signed on to topline Love Comes to the Executioner for writer-director Kyle Bergersen. The Aura Entertainment project is due to start shooting later this month in Montana. Executioner centers on a recent college graduate who becomes the star executioner at the local prison where his brother (Renner) is slated to die. The executioner's morality collides with his genetic destiny on death row when he finds an unconventional true love in his brother's incarcerated ex-girlfriend. Other casting is expected to be announced shortly. Doug Draizin and Steve Bickel are producing. Renner starred in the title role of the indie Dahmer, a part that landed him a best male lead nomination at the Independent Spirit Awards for the March ceremony. He recently wrapped the indie Neo Ned opposite Gabrielle Union. Renner is repped by WMA, the Untitled Entertainment/Parseghian-Planco management outfit and Nelson-Felker.
