[Update] Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson proved he can open a tentpole film all by his not-so-little lonesome with San Andreas's estimated, beefy $54.6M domestic take. That $14K per theater average, in 3,777 venues, was much better than the predicted $40M for the Warner Bros. disaster flick. 44% of that was attributed to 3D and, with an A- CinemaScore, it looks like the film will have domestic box-office aftershocks for some weeks to come. But the U.S wasn't the only place that the tremors were felt. Overseas, in 60 markets, San Andreas ranked #1 in 55 of those markets, opening with an international cume of $60M (on 14.5k screens) resulting in a worldwide cume of $113.2M.The real winner in this story, however, is Johnson. San Andreas is the best opening for him where he was not part of an ensemble, such as the Fast and Furious or the G.I. Joe flicks. Last year's...

Though a simple handshake would have sufficed, Rick rolled out the welcome mat for fresh-scrubbed stranger Aaron in this week’s episode of The Walking Dead by laying claim to his rations, slugging him, tying him up and sentencing him to cruel and unusual punishment. Maleficent got off to a strong start in the U.S. and abroad this weekend, while Seth MacFarlane's A Million Ways to Die in the West flopped.Disney's big-budget reimagining of Sleeping Beauty earned $69.4 million at the domestic box office, which is the biggest debut ever for star Angelina Jolie. Meanwhile, it grossed roughly $100 million overseas, which is a significant improvement over 2013's Oz The Great and Powerful.Overall business was about even with the same weekend last year, when Now You See Me and After Earth opened to $29.4 million and $27.5 million, respectively.Playing at 3,948 locations, Maleficent opened noticeably higher than Snow White and the Huntsman ($56.2 million), which debuted on the same weekend two years ago. Still, it was nowhere near Alice in Wonderland (2010), and also wound up a bit shy of Oz The Great and Powerful ($79.1 million).Maleficent's success can be attributed in part to the enduring...

As Jonah From Tonga arrives on BBC Three, we salute the meticulously observed characters of Australian comic Chris Lilley…
Feature
A sixteen year old Queen Bee, a disruptive Tongan teen, a juvenile offenders’ officer in her sixties, feckless teenage twins, a flamboyant drama teacher, a pushy Japanese mother… Chris Lilley puts on a wig, an outfit (and sometimes, a controversial bit of face paint) and becomes them all.
Watch him in costume and there’s no sense that Lilley is anyone but the character he’s playing. Other comedy drag acts - Little Britain’s Emily and Florence, for instance - might trade on the physical disconnect between the actor and persona, but Lilley is no pantomime dame. In his glossy brunette wig and school dress, the thirty-nine year old man disappears and he simply is hair-flicking, doe-eyed teen Ja’mie King. Change the wig, accent and mannerisms, and he becomes a naughty,...

After flying high over Memorial Day, the box office came crashing down this weekend. All of the major holdovers fell over 50 percent, while After Earth opened on track with recent sci-fi bombs like John Carter and Battleship. The only bright spot was Now You See Me, which opened way above expectations. Similar to the other recent movies in its franchise, Fast & Furious 6 took its foot off the gas pedal in its second weekend. The movie plummeted 64 percent to $35.2 million; while that was enough for first place, it still indicates that the movie won't be able to take the franchise to the next level box office-wise. To date, Fast 6 has earned a very strong $171 million. In second place, magician caper Now You See Me opened to a very good $29.3 million. That's the biggest non-Twilight debut ever for Summit Entertainment, which was acquired by Lionsgate in early 2012. The opening is particularly...

When humanoid monster truck Guy Fieri opened his newest restaurant in Times Square this fall, you could practically hear critics all across New York City sharpening their knives. The joint is a ready-made, ”Donkey Sauce”-covered punchline for writers hungry for a creative way to express disdain — who could resist a 500-seat macho wonderland that serves monstrosities with names like “Ain’t No Thing Butta Chicken Wing” and “Guy-talian Nachos”?
But even in context, the New York Times’s review of Guy’s American Kitchen stands alone. It’s so contemptuous, so angry, and so hilarious that it rivals the...

Forbes' new list of top-earning chefs for the last 12 months features plenty of names you'd expect. Loudmouthed UK toque Gordon Ramsay stands head and shoulders above the rest with a whopping $38 million a year. Rachael Ray and Wolfgang Puck round out the top three with $25 million and $20 million respectively.
We have to say, though -- Guy Fieri cracked the top ten? The Food Network star pulled in a $8 million last year, ahead of list no-shows Anthony Bourdain, Andrew Zimmern and Giada Delaurentis. That figure might have something to do with the fact he's Food Network's biggest star at the moment, according to Forbes. His show "Diners Drive-Ins and Dives" is shown up to eight times a day on the network, plus he stars in "Guy’s Big Bite," "Rachael vs. Guy Celebrity Cook-Off" and "Food Network Star." Initial box office results for Rock of Ages and That's My Boy seem to confirm two very important things: the 1980s was a lousy decade, and starpower is a bit overrated. The latest projects from box office heavyweights Tom Cruise and Adam Sandler both bombed hard this weekend, which allowed Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted to easily hold on to the top spot. Prometheus remained in second as well, though it took a big hit in its sophomore outing, and the Top 12 wound up down 16 percent from the same frame last year.Madagascar 3 dipped 43.5 percent to $34.06 million this weekend. That's a strong hold for an animated sequel: in comparison, Cars 2 fell 60 percent, Toy Story 3 dipped 46 percent, and Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa fell 44.5 percent. The movie remains ahead of both of its predecessors with a 10-day total of $119 million. Prometheus crashed 59 percent to $20.7 million in its second weekend. That...

What looked like a tight race on Friday turned out to not really be much of a competition, as Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted handily defeated Prometheus over the three-day weekend. That being said, even if it didn't quite reach the astronomical levels some had been expecting, director Ridley Scott's return to sci-fi still had one of the best second place debuts in history. The Top 12 earned $174.2 million this weekend, which is up 32 percent from the same frame last year when Super 8 and Judy Moody both underperformed. Madagascar 3 debuted to a strong $60.3 million at 4,258 locations, which is the fourth-highest opening of the year and the seventh-highest ever in June. It was a tad lower than Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa's $63.1 million, but was about in line with the first Madagascar's $61 million four-day Memorial weekend debut. It's also right on par with DreamWorks Animation's Kung Fu Panda,...

Midnight Update: Prometheus earned a very impressive $3.56 million from midnight showings at 1,368 theaters. That's seven times as high as Super 8's $500,000 on the same weekend last year, and also higher than Inception's $3 million midnight start in Summer 2010. It's also more than twice the recent midnight debuts of Mib 3 ($1.55 million) and Snow White and the Huntsman ($1.38 million). Both of those movies wound up with over $50 million for the weekend, and there's now a very good chance Prometheus ends up with at least that much.Forecast: So far this Summer, it's always been pretty clear which movie would wind up taking the top spot at the box office each weekend. That's definitely not the case this weekend, though, as highly-anticipated sci-fi flick Prometheus squares off against the third installment in DreamWorks' Madagascar series. Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted is reaching 4,258 locations, which is the 11th-widest release ever (second-widest for an...

MIB 3 held well in a few of its major markets and wound up in first place once again at the overseas box office. Meanwhile, Snow White and the Huntsman did solid business in its debut, while Prometheus put up some strong numbers a week ahead of its U.S. opening.Mib 3 added $78.6 million to bring its foreign total to $275.1 million through less than two weeks in theaters. The movie eased 29 percent to $15.4 million in China, and held about even in Germany $5.34 million) and the U.K. ($4.88 million) following soft debuts in both of those markets. The movie also added $7 million in Russia, $5.3 million in Japan, $3.8 million in South Korea, $3.7 million in Mexico, $3.7 million in Australia, $3.2 million in France, and $3 million in Brazil. It's already passed Men in Black II's $251.4 million foreign total, and it should eclipse the first Men in Black's $338.7 million sometime next weekend. Snow White and the Huntsman...

On Friday, the superhero team-up passed The Dark Knight ($533.3 million) to move up to third place on the all-time domestic chart, and on Sunday it passed $550 million in a record 31 days (it took Avatar 38 days). To date, The Avengers has earned $552.95 million, and it's still on pace for around a $600 million total. Battleship took another big hit this weekend, plummeting 54 percent to $5.1 million. Its 17-day total reached $55.4 million, which is off from John Carter's $62.4 million through the same point. The Dictator fell 49 percent to $4.7 million for a total of $50.8 million. Now you can pull off the road, pop into 7-Eleven and grab a chardonnay with stone fruit tones or a plum-like cabernet sauvignon, both of which pair perfectly with Go-Go Taquitos or a 1/4-pound Big Bite.
7-Eleven's new brand of house wines, Yosemite Roads, is cheaper than a 6-pack, too--$3.99 a bottle. The convenience store chain best known for Big Gulps and Slim Jims is following in the footsteps of Wal-Mart, Costco, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe's with their new branded wines. You can get a bottle at any 7-Eleven, as well as Denny's, Shell Garden grocery stores, and some retail outlets in Japan.
But is it any good? Tune in tomorrow for a special Fast Company taste test (drop us a line if you find the vino in your local 7-Eleven, we couldn't). Until then, we already know most people will be pretty happy about paying a few bucks...

Jesse Eisenberg battles a zombie in Zombieland
Photo: Sony Pictures Looks like Laremy's predictions are back on track, at least at the top spot, as Zombieland had one hell of a Friday debut to the tune of $8.5 million according to Steve Mason's early Friday estimates. To top it off, should Mason's three-day prediction of $21.3 million come to pass it would mean Laremy actually hit the number right on the button. You'd have to ask him, but I'm not sure if that's ever happened.
Battling for second place is a pair of 3-D animated features as Sony's Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs remains strong with $3.5 million on Friday, but the Toy Story/Toy Story 2 double feature is hot on its heels actually besting Meatballs by the slimmest of margins taking in $3.7 million. However, Mason sees Meatballs ending the weekend $2 million over Buzz and Woody, so we'll see if parents...

The cookbook writer whose life was saved by "Top Chef" judge and restaurateur Tom Colicchio has told her story for the first time to The Post's Don Kaplan. Colicchio used the Heim lich maneuver on Joan Nathan after she choked at a charity benefit at her home in DC. The culprit was a Persian chicken kebob prepared by Iranian cuisine master Najmieh Bat manglij. "I don't usually take such big bites," Nathan tells Kaplan. "It was the first thing I had eaten and it was so de licious,...

Twilight</i>" style="margin:0 5px 5px" />Teen vampire flick Twilight sucked the life out of its competitors this weekend, earning claiming the No. 1 spot with a $70.6 million opening, according to studio estimates.
Seventy-five percent of that cash flow came from women, Variety reports, and such a strong opening sets a new precedent. Openings of $70 million and up are generally expected from family films and fanboy franchises (see Iron Man and Dark Knight), but this fangirl (or fang-girl?) rush, while expected, exceeded the studio's expectations by more than $10 million.
Though sequels were almost a given considering the success of Stephenie Meyer's book series, Summit Entertainment announced ...
