The King of Havana
Director: Agusti Villaronga // Writer: Agusti Villaronga
Spanish director Agusti Villaronga is most infamously known for his delightfully perverse 1986 art-house shocker In a Glass Cage, which starred Gunter Meisner and Marisa Paredes, concerning a former Nazi doctor left paralyzed and confined within an iron lung after a suicide attempt. Circumstances allow him to insist that his wife hires a young boy to care for him rather than a nurse, and we learn that the good doctor is a pedophile that enjoys putting the fear of death into young men. Villaronga followed that up with 1987’s Moon Child, another strange and obscure film, starring Lisa Gerrard and featuring music from her famed group Dead Can Dance. On the art-house periphery generally due to queer themes and motifs, including with 2000’s The Sea, his last feature, 2010’s Black Bread, was ushered forth as the Best Foreign Language submission for...

“Pandemic” sees Japanese cinema again taking on the time honoured disaster movie formula, this time with the tale of a deadly virus threatening the country as various stars try to save themselves and their loved ones. Very much in the style of the 1995 Hollywood outing “Outbreak”, the film was directed by Zeze Takahisa, (best known for the offbeat vampire effort “Moon Child”), with actor Tsumabuki Satoshi (“Dororo”) and actress Dan Rei (“Love and Honor”) in the lead roles, and a supporting ensemble cast including Sato Koichi (“The Magic Hour”), Ikewaki Chizuru (“Strawberry Shortcakes”), Fuji Tatsuya (“Flavor of Happiness”), Kuninaka Ryoko (“Train Man”), and Mitsuishi Ken. Arriving shortly on region 2 DVD via Mvm, the film was originally released domestically back in 2009, at a time when global virus scares were still very much making headline news, and given recent events in Japan, its scenes of eerily empty cities and destruction still ring sadly true.

Japanese director Takahisa Zeze (Flying Rabbits; Moon Child) disaster movie come medical thriller ‘Kansen Rettou’ (aka Pandemic) is heading for UK DVD next month. A great cast including; Satoshi Tsumabuki (Dororo), Kanningu Takeyama (Memories Of Matsuko) and veteran actor Tatsuya Fuji (Empire Of Passion) keeps the - world threatened by a mysterious killer virus - plot moving at pace, and the love story (this is a Japanese disaster movie after all) sub plot, thankfully veers away from full blown melodrama…most of the time. Pandemic streets on May 9.
