Mads Mikkelsen is pushing for a Hannibal revival, expressing hope and interest in bringing the show back. Sir Anthony Hopkins earned his first Oscar for the role of serial killer Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs. Based on the novel by Thomas Harris, it was the last movie to win the ‘Big Five’ awards at the Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Hopkins only had about 16 minutes of screen time.

Hopkins went on to reprise his role in two more films, the sequel Hannibal and the prequel Red Dragon. While the sequel was more commercially successful than the original, the film was not as well-received and the actor himself was reportedly not happy with the film. He also mentioned that one scene in particular on Hannibal was done differently from the book.

Signature Entertainment has acquired U.K. and Ireland rights to writer-director Warwick Thornton’s Australian drama “The New Boy” from The Veterans.

The film follows a nine-year-old Aboriginal orphan boy who arrives in the dead of night at a remote monastery run by a renegade nun, disturbing the delicately balanced world.

Debutant Aswan Reid leads the film in the titular role, alongside Cate Blanchett, Deborah Mailman (“Sapphires”) and Wayne Blair (“Rams”).

“Inspired by Thornton’s own experience of growing up as an Aboriginal boy in a Christian boarding school, this is ambitious, tonally tricky filmmaking, bringing an unexpected dose of whimsy to social interests more austerely explored in Thornton’s excellent previous features “Samson and Delilah” and “Sweet Country,” Variety critic Guy Lodge said in his review of the film.

Tarak Ben Ammar has big plans for Italy. The Franco-Tunisian film and TV mogul is already a major player in the Italian industry thanks to Eagle Pictures, the production and distribution group he acquired in 2007 that is now Italy’s largest independent distributor due to exclusive distribution deals with Paramount and Sony Pictures for the territory. Ben Ammar joined Tom Cruise on the Rome red carpet for the June 19 world premiere of Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and later introduced Cruise to new Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni. “The meeting [between Cruise and Meloni] was very interesting. The prime minister knows a lot about cinema,” says Ben Ammar about the far-right leader.

Alongside Eagle’s distribution deals, the company has also partnered with Sony to co-produce six films together, including The Equalizer 3, the latest in Antoine Fuqua’s action franchise starring Denzel Washington that was shot entirely in Italy.

Peter Webber has signed on to direct the wartime thriller “Irena Sendler.” It tells the true story of Irena Sendler, a Polish social worker who defied the Nazis and organized a team of young women to smuggle 2,500 Jewish children out of the Warsaw Ghetto during the Holocaust. Casting is currently underway and production is expected to start in Poland later this year or early in 2024.

The script was penned by Agatha Dominik, Brian Pittman & Rachel Long, Stuart Hazeldine, and Jeff Most. Character actor Richard Brake has a lot of success in his career, racking up almost 90 screen credits over the last thirty years. Those credits include roles in Cold Mountain, Batman Begins, Doom, Munich, and Hannibal Rising, so he started getting cast in major productions with some frequency rather early on. But it’s interesting to see how much more prolific he has gotten since playing The Night King in Game of Thrones and Doom-Head in Rob Zombie’s 31. About half of his credits have come just in the seven years since 31 was released. Next up for him is The Gates, where he co-stars with John Rhys-Davies of the Indiana Jones and Lord of the Rings franchises (in addition to over 250 other projects). Whether through lack of continuity or just lack of reason, some prequels can make audiences feel like they watched something unnecessary. This year's Top Gun: Maverick has gone from one success to another, as it has found millions of younger fans as well as recaptured older fans' love of the franchise, and both groups are crossing their fingers for a Top Gun 3. The Oscar-nominated screenwriter Alessandro Camon (The Messenger) has signed on to adapt the Italian psychological thriller You Will Find the Words (Le parole lo sanno) for the screen.

British director Peter Webber (Girl With a Pearl Earring, Hannibal Rising) is attached to direct the film, which Rome-based Fenix Entertainment are producing.

Franzoso’s novel centers around a man with a terminal illness who has a chance encounter with a woman on a park bench, an encounter that leads to an extreme act of violence.

Camon told The Hollywood Reporter Fenix approached him about the adaptation and introduced him to Webber.

“We immediately hit it off,” he notes, calling Webber a “Renaissance man. He’s a cosmopolitan, he loves many genres and languages, and he’s truly into what he does.”

Exclusive: Rhys Ifans (Spider-Man: No Way Home) has signed on to star alongside Annette Bening and Jodie Foster in the Netflix film Nyad, which marks the narrative directorial debut of Oscar, BAFTA and Emmy winners Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin.

Pic is based on Diana Nyad’s bestselling autobiography Find A Way. It follows the remarkable true story of the marathon swimmer, who, at the age of 64, became the first person to complete the “Everest of swims”—executing a 53-hour, 110-mile swim from Cuba to Florida, through dangerous open ocean, without a shark cage.

Ifans is playing John Bartlett, the Florida-based boat designer and captain of the catamaran that accompanied Diana as she swam. Bartlett strategically and meticulously planned and navigated Nyad’s swim though the Florida Straits, keenly aware of the impact of weather and ocean currents on her journey.

Tributes are pouring in for Gaspard Ulliel, the French actor of Yves Saint Laurent biopic Saint Laurent and Marvel’s upcoming Moon Knight fame, who died on Wednesday after a skiing accident. He was 37.

Hollywood and the French film industry are paying tribute to French actor Gaspard Ulliel.

The actor, who stars in Marvel’s upcoming “Moon Knight” series, died on Wednesday following a skiing accident. He was 37.

Gaspard began acting while still at school. At the age of 12 he appeared in French TV movie “Une Femme En Blanc” (“A Woman in White”) in an uncredited role. In 2007 he took on his first major English-speaking role in “Hannibal Rising,” playing Hannibal, and in 2014 played fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent in the critically acclaimed film “Saint Laurent.”

He will make one of his final on-screen appearances in Marvel’s upcoming Disney Plus series “Moon Knight,” in which Ulliel played Midnight Man opposite Oscar Isaac.

A spokesperson for Disney told Variety: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of our friend and colleague Gaspard Ulliel. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this time.

The French actor, who is set to star in the forthcoming Disney+ series Moon Knight, passed away following a ski accident.

He was 37.

According to Deadline, Ulliel was hospitalized Tuesday after suffering a head injury.

The outlet states the actor was transported by helicopter to a hospital in Grenoble following an accident on the slopes in the Savoie region.

It has been reported that Ulliel collided with another skier at an intersection between two slopes.

The mountain police service working at the accident site said that there have been multiple incidents per day in recent weeks due to the snow hardening.

Ulliel plays Moon Knight villain Anton Mogart aka Midnight Man, on the forthcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe series.

Production is said to have been completed, and given the recently announced March 30 premiere date, it sounds like all of Ulliel's scenes were completed prior to his passing.

Actor was best known for performances in It’s Only The End Of The World, Saint Laurent and Hannibal Rising.

Martha De Laurentiis, a producer with more than forty years of experience in the entertainment industry and wife of the late Dino De Laurentiis, died on Saturday following a long battle with cancer. She was 67.

News of De Laurentiis’ death was shared on Instagram by television writer and producer Bryan Fuller. Fuller developed and executive produced the NBC series “Hannibal,” an adaptation of Thomas Harris’ novels which featured Mads Mikkelsen as Dr. Hannibal Lecter. De Laurentiis was an executive producer on the series.

“What an amazing lady. Martha De Laurentiis left us yesterday peacefully with her family at her side,” Fuller wrote. “Long live Martha and her brilliant legacy.”

Director Peter Webber is preparing a six-part series sequel to his Colombia-set teen drama “Pickpockets” (“Maestros del robo”), which Netflix launched globally in 2018. The film tells the story of aspiring teenage thieves learning how to be successful pickpockets.

“Apparently, it did really well amongst teenagers,” Webber told Variety. “They asked us to do a sequel, so at the moment we are working on six one-hour episodes following up the main characters.”

Netflix is not believed to be officially attached to the sequel, which is still in development stages.

It’s understood that the project will have a broader scope than the film. “As the series develops, the locations change,” Webber said. “It’s a bit more international than the last one.”

When it comes to Hannibal Lecter, two stories are typically brought up - Red Dragon and The Silence of the Lambs. These are the two original Hannibal Lecter stories, written by Thomas Harris. And while Hannibal has its fans, it is often considered wildly inferior to its predecessors. The less said about Hannibal Rising, the better.

Both Red Dragon and The Silence of the Lambs received terrific movie adaptations, and while Silence is obviously the more respected and famous movie, Red Dragon has more than enough qualities to make it a worthwhile investment.
