Sunday night's American Music Awards were so full of incredible performances — from Lady Gaga's liberal use of pyrotechnics to Adam Lambert's sexy display — that the actual awards given out seemed almost secondary. Still, the night's biggest upset probably belonged to country act Gloriana, who beat out Gaga (as well as R&B star Keri Hilson and rising hip-hop star Kid Cudi) for the Breakthrough Artist award.

The country group formed in 2008 when brothers Tom and Mike Gossin teamed up with singer and solo artist Cheyenne Kimball (who had first grabbed headlines as the winner of "America's Most Talented Kid" in 2002). Though the Gossin brothers are from Utica, New York, they relocated to Wilmington, North Carolina, to kickstart Gloriana. Once the...

President upstages ratings race
The two-hour finale of the America's Most Talented Kid talent competition series perked up for NBC on Friday while competition of a much bloodier sort helped ABC vie with CBS for the nightly win Saturday with its telecast of 2000's Gladiator. Thursday's regular combat between NBC and CBS was upstaged by President Bush's live 9 p.m. EDT address to the nation, which forced the Big Four networks to revamp their East Coast and West Coast lineups for the night. As a result, CBS' and NBC's regularly scheduled 10 p.m. dramas Without a Trace and ER ended well after the 11 p.m. close of primetime. Bush's 26-minute speech announcing the end of major combat in Iraq seemed tailor-made for a sweep stunt with its theatrical presentation of the president speaking from the flight deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln. The address averaged more than 48 million viewers on ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, CNBC, Fox News Channel and MSNBC combined, according to Nielsen Media Research.

CBS plows the competition with 'Painted House' party
CBS notched the most-watched movie of the season Sunday with the Hallmark Hall of Fame entry A Painted House, based on the John Grisham best seller about a farm boy's coming of age in the 1950s. CBS took the first Sunday of the May sweep in total viewers by a wide margin (15.3 million), while Fox prevailed as usual in the adults 18-49 demo (4.2 rating/12 share) with a double shot of The Simpsons from 8-9 p.m., according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research. NBC also flexed some muscle from 9-11 p.m. with back-to-back episodes of Law & Order: Criminal Intent but had little traction from 7-9 p.m. with America's Most Talented Kid and American Dreams.

Lance Bass Slams 'American Idol' As "Cheesy"
'N Sync star Lance Bass has knocked hit reality TV show American Idol - for being too commercial. The boy band star, who serves as a judge on talent search show America's Most Talented Kid, declares he's been put off American Idol because it's become "cheesy." He says, "It's gotten a little too commercialized for me. I don't like how they cheese it up with Ford commercials. It's too Broadway for me. It's like when that '205' guy, Ruben Studdard, and this other girl were singing in front of a mansion in the car. What are they doing? It's like cheesy karaoke videos they're creating. It feels like they're selling out." He adds, "The first season, I loved, and I'm really good friends with the American Idol kids from the first show. I like Kelly Clarkson, Justin Guarini and Tamyra Gray. They're very, very nice. I think the talent of the kids is even better this year. I just hope the kids get to do the stuff they want to do, instead of being told, 'Okay, you're doing this showtune here.'"...
