Creator Jada Pinkett Smith starred in Scream 2 (1997) alongside Elise Neal and Duane Martin. Jada shared no scenes with Elise and Duane in the film, but the latter two shared a memorable moment.
After the third season, UPN merged with The WB to form The CW, who then picked up the show, which had originally been canceled in March along with fellow UPN show Eve. Thanks to the show's executive producer Will Smith and actor Tony Rock's brother, Chris Rock, it was given the coveted slot behind Everybody Hates Chris on the new network.
In a 2005 interview, Elise Neal says that she quit the show because of her discomfort with the tension between Will and Jada Smith that led to her being treated unfairly on the set. In August 2005, Terri J. Vaughn, who played Jonelle Abrahams, and James Vincent, who played Turtle, also announced that they would not be returning to the series because of contract issues, but that November Vaughn returned to play Jonelle in a guest appearance for the third season's two-part "Legal Affairs" episodes, and Vincent returned to play Turtle in a guest appearance in the third-season episode "Creeping With The Enemy."
