In this special candid conversation actor Jimmy Shergill spoke to Subhash K Jha about his 30-year career, and so much more!
The super-talented Jimmy Shergill has no regrets about doing any of his films, the good back or ugly. “I might have regretted at that point of time because you feel that you did a film at the cost of doing something else you could have chosen something else because certain kind of promises were made to you. But when you start shooting they were not up to the mark. But I feel today when I look back I think every project every scene every film every song is taught you something and no matter how bad the endproduct, it has taught you something and probably made you what you are today and I think I take full responsibility for anything wrong I might have done earlier on in my career.

Brijendra Kala, the seasoned actor known for his character work in Hindi films, has also left a mark in web series and teleplays. Starting with a small role, he progressed to writing dialogues for TV shows and made his official film debut in ‘Haasil’. However, it was his notable roles in films like “Jab We Met,” “Mithya,” “Agneepath,” “Paan Singh Tomar,” “Pk,” and “83” that earned him recognition in popular cinema.
One of his recent screen appearances was in Zee Theatre’s teleplay ‘Boichek’, inspired by the work of German writer Karl Georg Büchner’s ‘Woyzeck’. Tribute My first memory of Irrfan Khan was 14 years ago, in a TV series called Mano Ya Na Mano (Believe it or not), and I’ve been captivated ever since.Geetika MantriIrrfan/FacebookI remember the first time I watched Irrfan Khan on screen, 14 years ago. Not unusually, 12-year-old me was surfing the channels on the TV till something grabbed my attention on Star One. It was his voice that caught me – he was setting the stage for an episode of a show called Mano Ya Na Mano (Believe it or not). The show itself was about mystical, inexplicable and spooky things that have happened in India – which was right up my alley – but it was Irrfan’s calm anchoring that pulled me in. From that day on, I would try to catch the reruns of the show every afternoon – I wasn’t allowed to watch TV too late at night,...

Irrfan Khan, who confessed to this writer, that he is jobless after The Lunchbox and in pursuit of a further excellence in his roles has finally found another character to challenge himself as an actor. In Tigmanshu Dhulia's The Killing Of A Porn Filmmaker, Irrfan will star as a porn director, a real lowdown sleaze ball who indulges in the lowliest of porn filmmaking. Reveals Tigmanshu, "We are talking about a guy who plants secret cameras in toilets, shoots honeymooning couples with hidden cameras...Irrfan plays the supreme of sleaze." But there is a redemptive graph to the character. Says Tigmanshu, "Irrfan's character redeems himself. He rises from the depths of sleaze and emerges a hero...why and how, I can't reveal. But after our collaboration in Paan Singh Tomar, this would be a completely new world." The film in English and Hindi would star a major international actor alongside Irrfan.

I t is a measure of how good an actor Irrfan Khan is when you start associating his “intense, brooding” onscreen persona with the man himself.
The actor was in London to participate in a masterclass conducted by the renowned director Asif Kapadia, of Senna fame, at the British Film Institute as part of the London Indian Film Festival. It was expected that the discourse would consist of his cinematic journey and the craft of acting – which of course he spoke about at length – what was unexpected, though, was the terrific sense of humour which laced his conversations, and how the entire auditorium was hanging onto his each and every word.
Enough has already been written about his “unconventional” looks and choices, so perhaps...

Mumbai, March 28: Irrfan is elated by the National Award for best actor for his performance in "Paan Singh Tomar" (Pst), but says the prestigious award has come his way after several disappointments.
Directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia, the film saw Irrfan playing Paan Singh Tomar, a former national steeplechase champion-turned-bandit.
"I thought I should have got it for 'Haasil', which was my first film with Tigmanshu Dhulia. Then I thought I'd get it for Mira Nair's 'The Namesake'. So it has been a fairly lengthy time-span of disappointments," said Irrfan.
Irrfan is happy to share the National Award for the best actor with Vikram.

The trailer for Tigmanshu Dhulia’s sequel Saheb Biwi Aur Ganster Returns was launched in royal style this week in Mumbai. True to the spirit of the film producers Rahul Mittra and director Tigmanshu Dhulia had a very royal ambience for the release of the first look of their film. The entire venue was decorated with palatial settings. The stars came one by one in vintage cars. While Irran arrived in a 1952 Chysler, Mahie Gill made an appearance in a 1932 for. Soha came in with a 1933 Ford, Himmy ina 1947 Buick and Tigmanshu Dhulia himself in a 1951 Pontiac.
Jimmy was dressed to the core as the Maharaja in a Sherwani and a turban. Soha came in a Pink Ghagra resplendent in antique jewelry. Mahie Gill looked every bit the Biwi of the film in a blue sari adorned with gold jewellery and Irrfan added to the cast looking every bit the nawabi gangster that he is.

Irrfan Khan essays the role of a gangster in director Tigmanshu Dhulia's sequel Saheb Biwi Aur Ganster Returns. The actor and director duo have been associated for a long time right from Tigmanshu Dhulia's first film Haasil and his last success Paan Singh Tomar is proof to their friendship. When Irrfan was asked to describe the director in one line he likened him to legendary director Vijay Anand. "Tigmanshu Dhulia is like director Vijay Anand. He is a brilliant director...

Even though Irrfan Khan and Tigmanshu Dhulia have given two superb films in the form of Paan Singh Tomar and Haasil, every subsequent project of theirs isn't kick-starting without its share of struggle. While they have been associated in a couple of shelved films already, fate of another film of theirs - Jai Ramji - continues to be in limbo."It was around a year back that Jai Ramji was announced with Arjun Rampal, Irrfan Khan and Preity Zinta. However ever since then there has...

When I saw Love Sex Aur Dhokha, I felt that was something I could never have made. I am not capable of making such a film. I admire Dibakar so much because I feel he is a better filmmaker than me.
Tigmanshu Dhulia was responsible for a remarkable entry into the Hindi film industry in 2003 with Haasil, a love story set against student politics. After a couple of forgettable films in eight years, he made an explosive comeback with Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster and Paan Singh Tomar. His latest biopic on an athlete-turned-dacoit is something everyone is going gaga about. But he maintains that he has always stayed in public memory because of his debut film Haasil. The filmmaker speaks to Nandita Dutta about the film, its delayed release and his struggle in the industry:
You came to know about Paan Singh Tomar while you were working on Bandit Queen.

I loved director Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Haasil but his subsequent films had been disappointments of varying degrees. So I was not expecting much from Paan Singh Tomar starring Irrfan Khan and Mahie Gill. However, this time Dhulia has lived up to the promise he showed in Haasil and more.
Based on a real life story, the film starts with a nervous journalist (Bijendra Kaala) approaching Paan Singh (Irrfan Khan) for an interview. As Paan Singh narrates his life story in flashback we see a young, fresh army recruit who loves his family, his country and his food. His seniors recognise his potential and in no time he becomes a national champion in the steeple chase race. However, he is forced to take premature retirement from army when his family in his village is threatened and unjustly treated. When the law fails to get him justice, he picks up the gun...

Paan Singh Tomar, which opened on March 2nd and has garnered some amazing reviews, is a film based on a true life story of an athlete turned Dacoit directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia (Haasil, Saheb Biwi aur Gangster, Shagrid). Starring Irrfan Khan with Mahie Gill, Paan Singh Tomar is an untold true story of a simple farmer, a loyal soldier and a champion athlete who became one of India’s most dreaded dacoits!
Paan Singh was a small town lad who went on to win the steeplechase at the Indian National Games for 7 consecutive years! He broke the national record, a feat that was unsurpassed for 10 years! A series of life changing events however forced Paan Singh to give up athletics, pick up the gun and become the scourge of the infamous Chambal valley in central India. Filled with deep emotions and fateful twists, Paan Singh Tomar is a gritty, no holds barred action adventure.

Director: Tigmanshu Dhulia, Screenplay: Tigmanshu Dhulia and Sanjay Chouhan, Actors: Jimmy Sheirgill, Mahie Gill, Randeep Hooda
In the context of contemporary Hindi cinema, Tigmanshu Dhulia is an important filmmaker. He is one director who has a keen eye and ear for north Indian socio-politics, which was amply reflected in his debut feature film Haasil. Since Haasil, he has made Charas and Shagird, which somehow fell quite short of the levels he had achieved as a filmmaker in Haasil, and the yet-unreleased Paan Singh Tomar, based on the real-life story of an international athlete-turned-Chambal dacoit.
With Sahib, Biwi Aur Gangster, Dhulia has reclaimed his place as a fine visual narrator of dramatic stories, a position that he had achieved through Haasil but yielded in his two subsequent released films. Indeed, Sbag is one of the significant mainstream pieces of cinema that captures a fictional story with sublime reflections of contemporary socio-political...

I've made no secret of my love for India's finest actor, Irrfan Khan. In the last few years he has creeped onto the international scene with performances in Mira Nair's The Namesake, Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited, Danny Boyle's Best Picture winner, Slumdog Millionaire, and most recently HBO's In Treatment. Well, it looks like Hollywood finally sees the potential in Irrfan, and he has been chosen to play Nels Van Atter, the primary baddie of the new Andrew Garfield Spider-man.
I will admit, I don't know anything about Nels Van Atter, and he seems to be something of a minor character in the overall Spider-man mythos, but I guess the new producers wanted something new. In any case, I couldn't be more excited about this casting decision. Up until this point, my interest in the Spider-man reboot has been very small, but the idea of getting Irrfan Khan...

Jimmy Sheirgill is in elite company. After Naseeruddin Shah/Arshad Warsi (Ishqiya) and Salman Khan (Dabangg) set the screen on fire with their terrific performance in their respective films, both of which had a small town setting to it, it is Jimmy who would be entering a similar zone. The film is titled Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster and while it has a small town setting to it, it also features Jimmy as a 'sahab' with a touch of royalty to it. Smiles Jimmy, "After playing an Nri in My Name Is Khan and a desi munda in Mel Karade Rabba, I guess it should be good fun to step into something entirely different in Sahib Biwi aur Gangster.
