Leatherheads is based on an original screenplay by Sports Illustrated columnists Rick Reilly and Duncan Brantley with input by filmmakers Steven Soderbergh, Stephen Schiff, and director George Clooney. The character Jimmy "Dodge" Connelly (played by Clooney) is based on the life of Green Bay Packers Johnny "Blood" McNally, and the plot is loosely based on Chicago Bears coach George Halas's signing of University of Illinois pro halfback Harold "Red" Grange.
