The series has received significant criticism from fans of the books, with much of it surrounding the depiction of Ellie and Magda; in the books, Ellie is described as being chubby, with frizzy hair and spectacles, and in the series, she is slim, with straight red hair and doesn't wear glasses. In the books, Magda is white with dyed red hair, and in the series she is of Black British descent.
