A Predator movie directed by Shane Black, written by him and the director of The Monster Squad. This sounded like the recipe for an awesome sci-fi action horror film, but what Black delivered was one of the least popular films in the Predator franchise, with a third act that was completely different from what was originally written and a variety of bad ideas being filmed as potential endings. Critics were unimpressed. Fans were disappointed. And now, we’re going to dig into what happened to The Predator.
1987 was a huge year for Shane Black. His original screenplay Lethal Weapon was turned into an action classic by director Richard Donner. His friend, director Fred Dekker, brought their script for the creature feature The Monster Squad to the screen, creating a film that is now considered to be a cult classic. The massively underrated Renny Harlin/Shane Black action film with Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson is getting a well-deserved upgrade. The Long Kiss Goodnight is also a notable movie that Samuel L. Jackson says he would love to do a sequel for. However, as fun as it is, the Christmas action film can always stand strongly on its own without the concern of a follow-up that misguidedly taints it. However, hopefully the film will find a new audience as Blu-ray.com is now reporting that The Long Kiss Goodnight is getting a 4K Ultra-hd release, courtesy of Arrow Video. And if you’re a fan of the film, it’s Christmas time for you, because you’re getting all the goodies to come with it.
The description reads,
“From screenwriter Shane Black and director Renny Harlin comes ass-kicking action thriller The Long Kiss Goodnight.

Shane Black's 2016 neo-noir buddy comedy "The Nice Guys" has become something of a cult classic, despite being less than a decade old. The film follows troubled private investigator Holland March (Ryan Gosling) and hirable enforcer Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) as they search for the missing teen Amelia (Margaret Qualley), who Healy was supposed to protect. It allowed both actors to really show their comedic chops and chemistry, and it's as close to a perfect buddy comedy as you can get. It's funny, it's action-packed, and it's occasionally a little scary in a fun way, like any of the several times when March essentially throws himself into an extended, painful tumble and somehow manages to survive every time.
Even though March becomes convinced that he cannot die, things get especially scary when he ends up at the bottom of a hill, right next to a bloody corpse. March gets upset,...

Known for playing one of the most popular and beloved Marvel superheroes Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. has risen to become a huge name in the industry. With his popularity and acclaim as an actor, it’s not a surprise that he is reported to receive a massive paycheck worth $100 million for his return to the MCU in the upcoming Avengers movies.

However, considering the hefty amount he is expected to get for his return to the MCU, it is surprising to learn that the actor once had a brief and unconventional role as a corpse in Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe’s 2016 buddy action comedy, The Nice Guys.

If you were a young writer with dreams of making it big in Hollywood, you couldn’t have a much better origin story than Shane Black. Just out of film school in his early 20s, Black famously sold his spec script Lethal Weapon to producer Joel Silver and Warner Bros., nabbing over $200 thousand for his work. Lethal Weapon was a significant hit in 1987, effectively putting Black on the map; combine that with the fact he also co-wrote The Monster Squad and starred in and script-doctored Predator that same year and you have a very nice start to a career.
In the 90s, Black became famous—or infamous—for two blockbuster screenplay sales. The Last Boy Scout sold for a record $1.75 million, a record at the time. A couple of years later, his script for The Long Kiss Goodnight made history when he got paid a whopping $4 million for it, still...

The holidays are upon us, so you'd expect the major streaming services' top titles to be yuletide classics that the whole family can enjoy. This is hilariously not the case, however, and it's either a sign of broadening tastes or coarsening sensibilities.
I'm not going to take issue with viewers getting into the Christmas spirit by watching such violent delights as "Die Hard," "Silent Night, Deadly Night" or any of the Shane Black classics set around the holiday. I might just plop down and run a marathon of "Lethal Weapon," "The Last Boy Scout," "The Long Kiss Goodnight," and "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" myself on Christmas Eve. Christmas Day is when you bust out "It's a Wonderful Life" (a remarkably dark movie itself) or any one of the adaptations of "A Christmas Carol."

Film Noir would become the ubiquitous term for critics in the mid-50s and 60s to describe the stylish crime dramas and capers of the 40s and 50s. The visual stylization of noir collides with post-war uncertainty and anxiety which would be reflected within the convolution of the storytelling itself. Post the 1950s, filmmakers worldwide would construct narratives that would homage to the essence of film noir and become more integrated within the umbrella of other genres. Those would be termed as neo-noirs.
The essence of noirs would essentially “corrupt” and push the essence of genres like sci-fi towards far cynical territory. These neo-noirs would become prevalent in the early 2000s, especially post 9/11, where homage to a style would be transmuted into an expression of the human condition. The topics range from trauma, loss, and identity struggles to a disconnection from the world they inhabit. At times, there is also an inclination to shirk responsibility,...

Today, Robert Downey Jr. is a bona fide blockbuster star with an array of incredible performances under his belt. Thanks to his career-defining turn as the genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist Tony Stark, aka the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Iron Man, he's one of the most beloved and respected actors working in Hollywood. But back in the mid-2000s, Downey was still earning back the trust of both show business and the audiences that fell in love with him in the 1980s and 1990s, after they watched him descend into tragedy with multiple arrests for various possessions of illegal substances and several jail sentences between 1996 and 2000.
Thankfully, Downey was able to piece his life and career back together. Key roles in the TV series "Ally McBeal" and movies like "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," and "Good Night, and Good Luck" helped the actor's profile rise. Despite skepticism from Paramount Pictures, director Jon Favreau...

Photo Credit: Warner Bros When the action buddy comedy The Nice Guys hit theaters in 2016, it had a lot going for it. The film boasted a dynamic duo in the form of Ryan Gosling and Academy Award winner Russell Crowe. Behind the camera was Shane Black, the writer and director known for action classics like Lethal Weapon and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Set in the groovy 1970s Los Angeles, The Nice Guys follows a mismatched pair of private eyes investigating the disappearance of a young woman and the mysterious death of a porn star. Despite positive reviews (currently holding a 91% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes) and strong performances from its leads, the film only achieved moderate success at the box office. However, The Nice Guys found a new life and a growing fanbase through home entertainment and streaming platforms. This resurgence in popularity has even sparked rumors of a potential sequel.

Doug Liman’s sophomore outing of this year, which is also coincidentally an exclusive streaming release like “Road House,” is a heist movie falling squarely in the genre of “heists organized by incompetents or buffoons,” or crime dramas where the protagonists are moderately self-centered but are more inclined to goof around than get any work done.
If one examines the genre of crime movies, arguably, the comedy is mined from these characters either being bad at their jobs or stuck in impossible situations. “The Instigators chooses to follow the former, as do the movies listed below. This is a recommendation list and not a ranking of any of the movies. It is rather a list compiling a couple of movies that share similarities with Doug Liman’s “The Instigators.”
7. 2 Guns (2013)
If you enjoyed The Instigators and its mix of high-stakes heists, unlikely partnerships, and constant twists, then 2 Guns is definitely worth a watch.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is arguably Shane Black's most underrated movie against the giants of Lethal Weapon, Iron Man 3, and 2016's The Nice Guys. The 2005 movie gained a large cult following years after its premiere, which is in part due to its arrival on numerous streaming platforms, and it now sits at 86% on Rotten Tomatoes. Robert Downey Jr. stars as the lead, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang follows the unfortunate events of Harry Lockhart, who also provides narration for a large proportion of the movie.
Although Robert Downey Jr. is mostly acclaimed for his role as the billionaire philanthropist, Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his role in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was crucial for the upward success of his sequential career. The self-referential comedy pairs Downey Jr. with Val Kilmar ("Gay Perry"), saddling the murder-mystery tropes with dark humor, to create an intricate tale full of surprise twists.

While Robert Downey Jr’s career was largely dictated by his association with the MCU in the 2010s, his brilliance as Tony Stark is only one aspect of the actor’s expertise in the medium. Being a recipient of three Oscar nods, Rdj hasn’t shied away from putting his abilities to the test, whether it be mastering the Australian accent for Tropic Thunder or the British one for Sherlock Holmes.

Matt Damon famously plays the younger version of the eponymous James Ryan in Saving Private Ryan, but who plays the older version in the framing narrative? Although the accuracy of whether or not the U.S. military would risk an entire platoons lives to bring one soldier home has been called into question, Saving Private Ryan is renowned as one of the greatest war movies ever made. Tom Hanks portrayal of Captain Miller subverts the usual brave-faced war heroes played by the likes of John Wayne to show that most World War II soldiers were just regular people drafted to fight.
Since its the most iconic stretch of the movie, Saving Private Ryans D-Day landings sequence is often described as its opening scene. But the movie actually opens with a framing device. In the present day, an older James Ryan visits the Normandy Cemetery to pay his respects to his fallen brothers-in-arms.

Apple TV+ thriller The Instigators could be getting a sequel, as stars Matt Damon and Casey Affleck – plus director Doug Liman – are said to be in talks to return.
Critics seemed to be somewhat divided over the merits of director Doug Liman’s crime caper, The Instigators, which emerged on Apple TV+ in August. It was a hit for the streaming platform/faceless tech giant, though, so there’s now word that the bickering stars at the centre of it, Matt Damon and Casey Affleck, are in talks to make a sequel. Director Doug Liman is also said to be thinking of lending his services again.
The story’s tucked away in a surprisingly long feature about baseball over on Deadline, and was spotted by the good folks at World Of Reel. In between all the chat about the Red Sox and other sports related matters, there’s a line...

Wolfs should be seen in a movie theater. I can say that quite confidently, having just done it myself, but the odds you'll be able to aren't good. Apple had planned to give George Clooney and Brad Pitt's reunion movie a full rollout, but just last month, that was cut down to just a limited, one-week theatrical run before it drops on streaming. Mixed experiences with releases over the last year encouraged the strategy reevaluation, rather than this specific movie, but even so, I think they picked the wrong one to start their pullback.

Mark Wahlberg's "Play Dirty" is based on the Parker novel series and could finally launch a successful franchise built around the anti-hero thief. Despite past adaptations, Parker as a character has not gained mainstream success due to his cold, humorless nature. Previous Wahlberg co-stars Mel Gibson, Jason Statham and Robert Duvall have all starred in Parker movie adaptations.
Mark Wahlberg's Play Dirty can finally launch a franchise that three of his biggest co-stars failed to. When Wahlberg made the unlikely switch from rapper to movie star, he was balancing acclaimed dramas like Boogie Nights with B-movies like The Corrupter. Mark Wahlberg action movies soon became a subgenre unto themselves and while in recent years he's gravitated more towards family-friendly projects like Arthur the King, he'll still dip back into R-rated action on occasion.

Mark Wahlberg's upcoming heist movie Play Dirty could finally establish him as a franchise star after decades. Play Dirty, directed by Shane Black, follows Wahlberg as professional thief Parker in an international heist. Wahlberg sees Play Dirty as a blend of action and humor, with potential for future films based on the Parker character.
Mark Wahlberg's upcoming heist movie Play Dirty can finally spark the franchise he should have had over two decades ago. Apart from his roles in two Transformers movies and the celebrated Ted movies, Wahlberg has not signed on to many franchise projects throughout his career. His counterparts such as Matt Damon, Jason Statham, and Keanu Reeves all have dedicated franchises in addition to their other notable works, but Wahlberg has yet to solidify himself as the true face of any one franchise.
Wahlberg is set to star in Play Dirty, a highly anticipated heist movie by acclaimed director Shane Black.

To lift a title from kids’ novelist Wilson Rawls, this has become the Summer of the Monkeys.
Before we get to HBO’s Chimp Crazy and Netflix’s Secret Lives of Orangutans, devotees of the simian arts will be treated to Apple TV+’s Bad Monkey, a Carl Hiaasen adaptation from the streamer’s comedy patron saint, Bill Lawrence (Ted Lasso, Shrinking).
Contrary to the show and novel’s name, the eponymous monkey is not, in fact, bad. Played by veteran animal thespian Crystal — you know her from Community, The Fabelmans and more — she is, in fact, quite good, reliable for reactive cutaways or wild, furry hijinks. She (actually, Crystal is playing a character who seems to identify as male, but we are not going down the path of monkey pronouns here) doesn’t always feel particularly connected to the plot of Bad Monkey, but it’s charming and fun just to have her around.

Robert Downey Jr. understood the concept of a miracle in the early 2000s shortly after a stint in the prison. After a decade of lost time and forgotten memories, the reputation that the A-lister had accrued for himself until then no longer held any charm to it. The 21st century brought with it a fresh start for the actor who would soon go on to become a cinematic legend.

But before any of that could come true, Robert Downey Jr. had to face the demons of his past. After spending nearly his entire life high on substances, the actor had to find the courage to set himself straight, accept accountability for his actions, and take back control of his destiny moving forward.
In simpler terms, Robert Downey Jr. learned, evolved, adapted, lived up to his potential, and rose to greatness.

Doug Liman directs; Matt Damon and Casey Affleck star in a thoroughly entertaining buddy comedy caper. Our review of The Instigators:
At its core, The Instigators is about two complete idiots. Fortunately, the filmmakers that dreamed them up are much smarter, as proven by two introductory scenes that are as precisely engineered as a Swiss watch.
In the first, we meet Matt Damon’s Rory, a tired, worn-down military veteran who misses his son and, in his own mumbling way, admits the depths of his depression to his shrink Dr Rivera, played with clear-eyed intelligence by Hong Chau. Cut to Casey Affleck’s Cobby, an alcoholic ex-con who’s so morally bankrupt that he uses his own young son to perform his breathalyser tests for him.
One scene after that, and we’re introduced to the grand scheme that will shape the rest of the movie: local hoodlum and...

As far as pivotal movie roles go, few can match up to Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man. It's one of the most famous, beloved portrayals of a superhero ever, and it almost never happened at all. Downey Jr. had a troubled reputation back when Marvel first started looking to cast the role; he had famously struggled hard with addiction and his mental health, to the point where production teams in the 2000s would withhold portions of his salary until after he finished filming. It was insurance in case real-life circumstances forced him out of the project, as was the case on the legal TV drama "Ally McBeal."
Although Downey Jr. wasn't quite as down on his luck pre-"Iron Man" as the common narrative implies (he'd already started to prove himself with movies like "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" in 2005), his casting in "Iron Man" in September 2006 was...

MaXXXine, the sequel to director Ti West‘s films Pearl and X, is swiftly approaching its July 5th theatrical release date, and the marketing materials have revealed the story of the ’80s-set film involves, to some degree, a real-life serial killer: Richard Ramirez, a.k.a. the Night Stalker. The decision to include the Night Stalker in the film hasn’t gone over well with some who have watched the trailers and West – along with cast members Mia Goth and Elizabeth Debicki – addressed the involvement of the Night Stalker in a new interview with Total Film.
Goth said the Night Stalker element anchors the story and “sets out a breadcrumb trail back to reality. It’s not just some big sweeping horror movie that’s purely for entertainment value. It’s rooted in something.”
When asked which characters might cross paths with the Night Stalker, Debicki said, “I won’t give anything away.
