Read allAbdulah wants to be in top shape for the international marathon coming up soon in the refugee camp. That's why he goes out running every morning as the first rays of sun light up the refugee camps in the Sahara desert (Algeria). He knows that being placed high in the marathon would brighten up the faces of the people of Western Sahara, if only for a few hours.

    Forgotten conflict

I am delighted that PBS has shed light on this long lasting but somehow forgotten conflict. A story about thousands of people who live in the worst situation in the middle of nowhere (The hardest place to live in the middle of the Sahara desert).

Morocco organized the "green march" forcing Saharawis to escape from their own land almost 30 years ago. More than 300,000 Moroccans went from Morocco to Western Sahara and established there. Saharawi refugees live in camps for almost thirty years now, and Moroccan authorities as well as Spaniards (Western Sahara was a former colony of Spain) or French (Moroccans big ally) haven't done much to solve the problem.

Living in the dessert for 30 years

It's a beautifully done documentary on the Saharawi refugees living in a hostile desert for 30 years now. I saw the documentary in PBS and I was taken by the characters and the situation they live in right away.

The documentary is centered around a yearly event: the marathon in the Sahara desert. It has the right amount of information (for those like me who did not know their situation). The characters are charming; humble but determined. The documentary has truly emotive moments. And finally the amazing background scenario, the Sahara desert, which is beautifully portrayed in the picture.

Definitely worth seeing if you get a chance!
