The one thing that remains true about horror fans is that we’re incredibly passionate about the genre. We come to the defense of our favorite horror media, we anticipate new releases, and the list goes on. But what about the films that don’t get nearly any appreciation or are outright hated? There are plenty of hated horror films that not even I would defend, for one reason or another. Yet there are some that receive way too much hate at the time of their release or for years afterwards.
Sometimes remakes of older horror films are immediately disliked, an original horror film doesn’t quite live up to expectations, a sequel in a horror franchise becomes an unwelcome addition etc. Compiling a list of horror films that get hated on is quite the feat if I’m being honest. There might be some folks shaking their fists because...

Jaume Collet-Serra is keeping the momentum going after the success of his Netflix thriller Carry-On. The filmmaker, known for House of Wax, Orphan, and The Shallows, has lined up his next project—Play Dead, a survival thriller.
Details about the plot remain secret, but sources describe Play Dead as a mix between Don’t Breathe and 1917. Don’t Breathe, directed by Fede Alvarez, is a tense home invasion horror, while 1917, helmed by Sam Mendes, is a gripping war film. This description suggests Play Dead may combine elements of both, possibly blending high-stakes survival with a wartime setting. However, that remains speculation for now.
The screenplay was written by Peter Stanley-Ward and Natalie Conway. The film is being produced by Nocturnal, BoulderLight Pictures, Bad Grey, and Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures.

Fresh off the success of his Netflix thriller Carry-On, Jaume Collet-Serra has set up his next project, a survival thriller titled Play Dead.
Deadline reports that while the plot synopsis is under wraps at this time, Jaume Collet-Serra’s Play Dead is being described by sources as “Don’t Breathe meets 1917.”
Don’t Breathe is of course the intense home invasion horror movie directed by Fede Alvarez, while 1917 is the Sam Mendes-directed British war movie from back in 2019.
The implication here is that Play Dead is some kind of home invasion movie with a wartime setting, but that’s purely speculation based on what little we’re being told here.
Stay tuned for more on Play Dead as we learn it.
Peter Stanley-Ward & Natalie Conway wrote the screenplay. Nocturnal is producing alongside BoulderLight Pictures, Bad Grey, and Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures.
Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert will produce through Ghost House Pictures.

Jared Padalecki might have to solo Season 16 of Supernatural if it ever happens, but there is one film from the actor’s filmography that seems to have been ripe for some sort of multi-canon crossover. Before Supernatural, the actor was part of a small remake of a 1953 film called Mystery of the Wax.
Jared Padalecki as Cordell Walker in Walker || The CW
In the film, called House of Wax, Jared Padalecki’s character, Wade, dies thanks to a serial killer who uses wax on his victims. However, pit the same character against Sam Winchester, and there might be a curb stomp that makes for great television. Of course, the character of the serial killer, Bo Sincalir, might not be able to jump universes, but having Sam Winchester take down a demon with a similar Mo can make for a great episode nonetheless.

Scott Storch has been famous for a lot of things when it comes to his star-studded career, but perhaps the most talked-about element of his life is the steamy romance he once shared with his ex-girlfriend Paris Hilton. But while that was in the past and he has since long moved on, he has been getting under a lot of limelight as of late.

This time around, it’s because of the recent series of candid confessions that he came clean about regarding his whirlwind romance with Hilton during an appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast. And while that was that, what’s further interesting is how this news has come amidst his baby’s mother Florence Mirsky’s racial slur controversy.

Horror fans and critics can usually predict when a movie is going to bomb at the box office. Even with a star-studded cast, like Scream 4, some horror movies are doomed from the beginning. Most of the time, movies that tank at the box office are unwanted sequels or movies that are only loved by niche horror audiences.
Horror sequels and remakes already tend to be risky movies at the box office because not all audiences resonate with their originals or only enjoyed the movie subsequently. Some box office bombs later became fan favorites in the eyes of horror fans. House of Wax grossed over $32 million domestically with a $40 million budget but is considered a campy, classic horror movie. It can take some time for horror movies to resonate with audiences, but some horror movies were doomed from the beginning.

Larry Cohen isn’t really a horror guy, at least not in the same vein as his contemporary filmmakers like Wes Craven, John Carpenter, or Tobe Hooper. Cohen wasn’t even really the same type of director as he wrote almost 3 times as many projects as he directed. What he lacked in quantity for horror movies though, he more than made up for in quality. This quality started with 1974’s It’s Alive and moved through very different types of horror like God Told Me To, The Stuff, and Q the Winged Serpent. The only series of movies he was involved in was his trilogy of It’s Alive movies. While the first two were heavy hitters in terms of themes that were hidden under the guise of creature features, the third one had far less to say but is unfairly seen as less fun. 1987 was a weird year for the man,...

Jared Padalecki will trade his Stetson for a mask and scrubs as he reteams with Walker showrunner Anna Fricke for a new medical drama developing at CBS. The untitled one-hour series finds Padalecki playing a doctor treating patients using rural medicine. Rural, of course, refers to medical establishments outside of massive community hospitals. Rural medical facilities are typically in semi-remote areas, meaning treatment is out of the way.
According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Anna Fricke’s untitled Texas medical drama revolves around a headstrong, devoted country doctor (Padalecki) who practices his unique style of improvisational medicine alongside his new protégé, a young doctor running from her past. Together, they operate a mobile clinic and heal the bodies and souls of their underserved community in the medical desert of rural Texas.

The horror thriller The Woman in the Yard, which is coming our way from Blumhouse Productions, Universal Pictures, and director Jaume Collet-Serra, was once set to reach theatres on January 10, 2025, but then it bumped off the Universal release slate entirely to make room for another Blumhouse / Universal collaboration, the Wolf Man reboot directed by Leigh Whannell. Wolf Man is now scheduled for a January 17 release, with The Woman in the Yard following on March 28th – and with that date just a couple of months away, the trailer for The Woman in the Yard (which will probably be attached to Wolf Man as well) has dropped online. Carry-On.For the past few years, Jaume Collet-Serra has been getting the proverbial bag; with Carry-On, he peers inside it. The film is a thriller set during the holiday crunch at Lax: it centers on Ethan Kopek (Taron Egerton), a prematurely harried Tsa officer (and recent police academy washout) who clocks in for his Christmas Eve shift at the crack of dawn with something to prove. Specifically, Ethan is hoping to show his skeptical bosses—as well as his newly pregnant girlfriend, Nora (Sofia Carson), herself an airport employee—that he’s finally ready to take his shit-eating gig manning the baggage scanner seriously. “I’ve been coasting,” he admits at a staff meeting. “But I can do better.” No sooner has Ethan taken his post than he’s recruited, against his will and under the noses of his coworkers, to steward a mysterious package through security and onto an outbound flight,...

The Christmas movie sensation of 2024 isn't "Red One," nor is it any of the other non-Christmasy holiday releases like "Wicked," "Gladiator II" or "Moana 2." Okay, it might be "Hot Frosty." But if it's not "Hot Frosty," it's most assuredly Jaume Collet-Serra's crackerjack action-thriller "Carry-On." Currently streaming on Netflix, "Carry-On" is an unabashed B-movie -- Collet-Serra's speciality dating back to programmers like "House of Wax" and "Orphan" -- that harkens back to the '80s and '90s era of tightly paced and constructed action flicks like "Die Hard," "Under Siege," and "Speed." These films weren't mega-budget blowouts, but they did have studio-level production value. There were no corners being cut, and no dodgy CGI; you always had the sense that you were watching a big movie made with professional pride. And best of all, you didn't have to plunge into a series of books to get acquainted with the films' larger mythology.

Spanish director Jaume Collet-Serra has become a major power player in Hollywood over the past decade and a half, carving out a name for himself in thrillers and big-budget action movies. After making his directorial debut in the 2005 horror film House of Wax, the skilled filmmaker has continued to increase the size, scale, and scope of his productions. He further solidified his place as a go-to Hollywood director with his continued working relationships with big-name stars like Dwayne Johnson and Liam Neeson.
While Collet-Serra's movies might not seem like ambitious productions, he has found a lot of success sticking with a specific type of movie, showcasing his talent as a filmmaker who knows how to entertain an audience. Though some of his efforts have been lesser than others, he can often be counted on to elevate even lackluster material. With Collet-Serra's latest movie, Carry On, once again proving his talents,...

Family gatherings can be murder. Even worse if you are not a member of the immediate family. As we head into this year’s holiday season, I have no doubt that many reading this will feel that even more acutely than in the past. Sure, there will be the usual gathering around the table (or in front of the TV with paper plates if you’re anything like my family), food will be served, drink will be had, and conversation will abound, but the latter especially could lead to more than a little family tension. Which is why William Castle’s classic 1959 film House on Haunted Hill feels especially appropriate for this edition of Gods and Monsters as we approach Christmas 2024. You may well feel like a stranger among strangers this year, as the guests of eccentric millionaire Frederick Loren (Vincent Price) and his wife Annabelle (Carol Ohmart) no doubt do.

T’is the season — for male strippers? Yes, actually. Yes indeed.
Netflix’s new Christmas movie “The Merry Gentlemen” is now streaming, telling story of a young dancer who comes home to find that her parents’ business — and thus, her whole childhood, essentially — may be going under. So, to help save it, she organizes a Christmas-themed male revue to pull in ticket sales.
The movie features a lot of familiar faces, but perhaps some new ones for you too. So, we’ve got you covered.
Here are all the major players in “The Merry Gentlemen.”
Netflix Ashley (Britt Robertson)
Ashley is a professional dancer, who is unceremoniously fired for being too old (in her 30s). She’s played by “Tomorrowland” and “The Longest Ride” star Britt Robertson. She also starred in “The Space Between Us” and more recently, “The Rookie: Feds,” as well as a few episodes of “The Rookie.

The New York Times reported that Hot Frosty and The Merry Gentleman are two spicy movies that Netflix is bringing this holiday season. Hot Frosty stars Lacey Chabert, who’s considered the Queen of Christmas on The Hallmark Channel, but that may not last for long with the network’s changes.
She’s starring in a naughtier version of the classic Christmas film. She plays a widow named Kathy, who’s overwhelmed with running the diner.

Though they don't have nearly as many big-screen appearances as zombies or vampires, werewolves are still popular characters depicted in several films. It's not always the case, but most films with the hairy supernatural species show the werewolf characters as ordinary people turning into vicious killers. However, it's not a rule that werewolf stories must be told within the horror genre. Films like Teen Wolf have used lycanthropy to tell relatable coming-of-age stories through a comedic lens.
Stories of lycanthropy align with the 1980s cultural shift when conversations around sex and puberty were seeping into pop culture. Many of the '80s werewolf films deal with supernatural characters entering a new phase of life, with the physical transformation from human to wolf being representative of this change. Many of these transformations depicted in '80s werewolf films are presented as being painful, which happens to pair well with gory imagery typically associated with horror films.

Vincent Price's first horror movie was a must-watch sequel to a masterpiece in the genre. The classic movie actor enjoyed a celebrated career in Hollywood, with his most notable works being horror films. Over the course of his time in the industry, Vincent Price starred in a long list of great horror movies, including House of Wax, The Fly, and The Masque of Red Death. As for his first contribution to the genre, that was The Invisible Man Returns, a movie Price made in 1940 when his career was just starting to take off.
Much of Vincent Price's reputation as a horror movie star stems from the work that he did between the late 1950s and the 1970s. As a young actor, Price spent much of his time acting in dramas, taking supporting roles in movies like Laura and Leave Her to Heaven. Although these films preceded his heyday as a horror movie icon,...

Vincent Price is one of the original icons of horror cinema, best known for his commanding and one-of-a-kind voice, as well as his charismatic screen presence. Price has made a career from playing a wide range of characters, mainly in gothic horror and intense thrillers, where the roles he plays are equally tragic and horrifying. He was arguably the most popular horror actor of the 1960s, while his collaborations with famed director Roger Corman, as well as frequently appearing in Edgar Allan Poe adaptions, made him a recognized and memorable figure in horror cinema.
In a career spanning six decades, Price's creepiest film characters were some of the most unsettling in film history, like his intense, harrowing personas in House of Wax and The Pit and the Pendulum. Price has made weaving terrifying figures with genuine emotion and sympathy his trademark, and whether he's playing a cruel host or haunted scientist,...

Terrifier 3 smashed box office expectations past weekend, a huge win for indie horror, fans of the Terrifier series, and, of course, everyone who has worked so hard over the last 10+ years to create the Terrifier films. I remember first interviewing Damien Leone when All Hallow's Eve was released, and it's been incredible to see the journey that he and Art the Clown have taken over the years.
Now that horror fans around the world have had a chance to see the film, I wanted to share my recent conversation with Lauren Lavera, who joined me as a special guest on our Corpse Club podcast. Lauren and her character, Sienna, have also had an incredible journey over the course of Terrifier 2 and 3, and we discuss her experience on set, the future of Terrifier, her martial arts background, fan interactions, favorite horror films, and more!

Jason Statham's 2011 action thriller The Mechanic is a remake of a classic Charles Bronson film of the same name and is now one of the most popular movies on Netflix. The Mechanic remains one of Jason Statham's highest-rated movies of his celebrated career and one of Statham's most successful film franchises. The film follows Statham's Arthur Bishop, an elite hitman or "mechanic" who is the best in the business. After Bishop's mentor Harry (Donald Sutherland) is murdered, Bishop goes on a one-man-army mission to avenge his death and make those responsible pay. It's a classic premise for Statham and one of his most immersive movies.

“Terrifier 3” has not yet arrived in theaters, but already its writer and director Damien Leone confirmed that he will make “Terrifier 4.”
The third installment of the slasher franchise premiered Thursday at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. During a Q&a, Leone affirmed, “Yes there will be a ‘Terrifier 4.’” No further details were given.
The franchise gained a cult following with its first release, but it only became a big name in horror after the sequel came out. “Terrifier 2” surpassed expectations, reaching $15 million in box office sales. The movie’s budget, in contrast, was less than a tenth of that at $250,000.
As for “Terrifier 3,” the cast remains full of the familiar faces with David Howard Thornton returning as Art the Clown. Also returning is Lauren Lavera as Sienna, Elliot Fullam as Jonathan Shaw, Samantha Scaffidi as Victoria Heyes and Chris Jericho as Burke. The movies are known for their extreme gore,...

If there’s one thing horror fans and filmmakers love to do, it’s compare notes on their favourite facets of the genre. About movies, about influences, about giant creepy-crawlies. And most of all, about the different driving trends of the many eras; what we were scared of, and how that bled so openly into the defining genre cinema of the time. From the atomic fallout of the 1950s and the creature features that followed, to the rise of exploitation, and the real-world killers behind the eventual slasher boom of the ’80s, it’s the subtext that an entire community is built on.
So there’s something particularly warm and comforting about Sarah Appleton and Phillip Escott’s similarly-tinged doc Generation Terror, which seeks to unravel the real-world fears behind the particularly grisly output of the 2000s. An era often characterised by iffy remakes and gnarly extremity which made for...

Blake Lively has always made interesting choices as an artist. As /Film's Hannah Shaw-Williams noted while writing about the larger-than-anticipated box office debut for Lively's romantic drama "It Ends with Us," the "Gossip Girl" alum is the rare actor to become "a reliable star of so-called 'chick flicks' i.e. movies overtly marketed towards a female audience" in recent years. This dates back to her breakout role nearly 20 years ago in Ken Kwapis' "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants," a deeply earnest coming-of-age film that also happens to be about a pair of jeans that magically fits four teen girls with decidedly different body types. It's a good movie!
As she settled into adulthood, Lively continued to branch out, collaborating with auteurs like Rebecca Miller and Oliver Stone while primarily focusing on low-to-mid-budget, non-franchise fare at a time when such films were being banished to the direct-to-streaming realm. That's not...

Jamie Lee Curtis updates on Freakier Friday sequel, teasing Chad Michael Murray's return from the original movie. Production for the sequel wraps up in two weeks, with Curtis and Lindsay Lohan reuniting in a body-swapping plot. It's unclear how Murray's Jake would be involved, although there are some speculations, such as having a daughter with Anna and potentially being involved in the body swap.
Freakier Friday star Jamie Lee Curtis gives a major update for the sequel and teases the return of a star from the original movie. The 2003 body swap comedy, based on the Mary Rodgers 1972 novel of the same name, saw Curtis and Lindsay Lohan swap bodies after eating a mysterious fortune cookie. The film grossed over $160 million worldwide on a $26 million budget and received positive reviews, while Curtis earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy.

2024 has been an extraordinary year for film preservation, with theatrical premieres of new restorations of “The Searchers” and “North by Northwest” unspooling at festivals and repertory houses while pristine new editions of essential films like Michael Powell’s “Peeping Tom” and Martha Coolidge’s “Not a Pretty Picture” become available for home viewing via 4K and Blu-ray releases. The 1952 adventure film “Bwana Devil” is not held in as high regard as those classics by most cinephiles, but its restoration and Blu-ray release from Kino Lorber are just as significant. The first color 3D feature film, “Bwana Devil” was a game changer in Hollywood history, and Kino’s Blu-ray provides the first chance in decades to see it as it was originally presented — an experience that reveals “Bwana Devil” is a far more exciting film than its tepid reputation would indicate.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Film Noir Gets so Many Studio Notes it Achieves Sentience
I’m not the most important person in the world today who loves Venn Diagrams, but “His Kind of Woman” might be best explained as something that rests at the center of a series of overlapping circles. Almost all of those circles are “Howard Hughes wanted reshoots,” to be fair, but there are a number of factors that make this tropical fever dream a fun film noir b-side, best watched with a rowdy group of friends late at night. Before you dart toward the comments to argue that George Huang’s How to Make a Monster isn’t a remake, let me explain why it’s my focus this month.
In 2001, legendary special effects artist Stan Winston co-produced a series of made-for-cable “remakes” alongside Colleen Camp and Lou Arkoff based on Aip horror flicks of the 1950s. They were all monster films based on Samuel Z. Arkoff properties (Lou’s father) under the banner “Creature Features.” Winston developed these films for Cinemax and HBO, where they’d haunt late-night rotations. He even turned his “Creature Features” villains into a toy line, although sales were underwhelming because the figures released out of synch with each premiere.
I used quotations around “remakes” above because 2001’s How to Make a Monster is a remake by title only. Herbert L. Strock’s 1958 original is about a makeup effects artist who uses his secret foundation recipe to control actors.

For as long as there have been films, there have been filmmakers attempting to enhance the theatrical experience through the use of gimmicks. From the red-eyed skeletons of William Castle to the “odorama” cards of John Waters’ Polyester, gimmicks are the puns of the filmmaking world: memorable and effective in small quantities, but annoying when overused.
That’s why I get why so many people reject 3D cinema. After all, modern theater screens ended up becoming oversaturated with lazily post-converted cash-grabs rather than movies that were shot on actual stereoscopic cameras. However, having just recently fixed my own aging 3D TV and binge-watched dozens of gimmicky genre films, I’m pleased to say that there are a surprising number of fun 3D experiences beyond the usual suspects.
With that in mind, here’s a list recommending six underrated horror movies that were shot in 3D!

Being openly and undeniably queer in horror didn’t happen overnight. For so long, non-heterosexuality in the genre was coded or downplayed. Villainization was also common. Exploited, however, shows just how far we have come along in terms of transparency. While this 2022 film doesn’t have the renown or accolades of others, it does offer a change in routine. Neither queerness nor terror are sacrificed or dialed back in favor of the other, and the story is refreshingly uninhibited.
It would seem confusing to call Exploited openly queer when two of the central characters start out as closeted, albeit one of them is more intensely so than the other. Nevertheless, appearances are deceiving in Carl Moellenberg and Anthony Del Negro’s script. That sense of deception begins quickly — along with the film’s sensuality— as a webcam fetish model known as “wrestlerstud99” (Colin Bates) is attacked and presumably murdered by...

Back in the late 90s, a handful of powerful Hollywood producers set out on what was then a very exciting venture for genre fans: Dark Castle Entertainment, a production company dedicated to making medium-budget horror movies with A-list casts. Inspired by the legacy of beloved 50s schlockmeister William Castle, Dark Castle was going to remake some of the producer-director’s most famous works, like House on Haunted Hill and 13 Ghosts, in addition to focusing on original material. These movies weren’t going to be cheapies like Castle’s were – they’d have substantial budgets for the genre, top-tier creative teams behind the camera, and recognizable faces from film and television in front.. It was an inspired idea, and though now we look back on the venture with bittersweet memories, Dark Castle definitely left its mark on the horror genre. Calling Warner Bros. its home, Dark Castle had put out...

A Cinderella Story sequel may not work due to the challenge of repeating the original story with the same characters. Chad Michael Murray's return in a potential Freaky Friday 2 would be more believable and fun for viewers. Not all rom-coms and teen movies necessarily need a sequel, per Murray's realistic idea for a Cinderella Story follow-up.
Chad Michael Murray has made his return to rom-coms with Mother of the Bride, and he has a great idea for a sequel to one of his most popular rom-coms, but its a tricky one to pull off. Chad Michael Murray cemented himself as an early 2000s dreamboat with roles in A Cinderella Story, One Tree Hill, Freaky Friday and more. Now, as a father of three, the actor says his kids are one of his biggest considerations when choosing new roles.
The Mother of the Bride star sat down with Numéro Netherlands ahead of the release of the Netflix movie and discussed his decades-long career, future projects and how he always puts his family first.
“I would say, a lot of material, especially over the past five to eight years since my son was born, I choose because I think one of the last things you really want is for your kids to be berated in school for what their parents are doing,” Murray told the publication. “I don’t want my kids going to school, being freshmen in high school, and Dad’s butt posted all over their locker.

Not to be confused with the 1986 Gary Paulsen novel that was on your fifth-grade reading list, Adam Green's 2007 slasher "Hatchet" was intended to be an homage to the plentiful stalk-and-kill movies from the 1980s. The first "Hatchet" takes place deep in the swamps of Louisana where feckless city-dwellers get lost while taking a swamp tour. Universal even screened the movie for exhibitors (i.e. theater owners) at the annual CinemaCon to get excitement going for the start of the summer movie season.
