Jaume Collet-Serra is keeping the momentum going after the success of his Netflix thriller Carry-On. The filmmaker, known for House of Wax, Orphan, and The Shallows, has lined up his next project—Play Dead, a survival thriller.

Details about the plot remain secret, but sources describe Play Dead as a mix between Don’t Breathe and 1917. Don’t Breathe, directed by Fede Alvarez, is a tense home invasion horror, while 1917, helmed by Sam Mendes, is a gripping war film. This description suggests Play Dead may combine elements of both, possibly blending high-stakes survival with a wartime setting. However, that remains speculation for now.

Fresh off the success of his Netflix thriller Carry-On, Jaume Collet-Serra has set up his next project, a survival thriller titled Play Dead.

Deadline reports that while the plot synopsis is under wraps at this time, Jaume Collet-Serra’s Play Dead is being described by sources as “Don’t Breathe meets 1917.”

Don’t Breathe is of course the intense home invasion horror movie directed by Fede Alvarez, while 1917 is the Sam Mendes-directed British war movie from back in 2019.

The implication here is that Play Dead is some kind of home invasion movie with a wartime setting, but that’s purely speculation based on what little we’re being told here.

Exclusive: After scoring massive viewership with Carry-On, his Netflix action-thriller starring Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman, which drew rave reviews in its December launch, director Jaume Collet-Serra has found his next project in Play Dead, a survival thriller described as Don’t Breathe meets 1917, sources tell Deadline.

Specifics as to the film’s plot are under wraps. Script is by Peter Stanley-Ward & Natalie Conway. Nocturnal is fully financing the project and producing alongside Ghost House Pictures, BoulderLight Pictures, and Bad Grey, with production to kick off at NantStudios in Docklands Studios Melbourne in May.

Akiva Nemetsky and Keaton Heinrichs will produce for Nocturnal, alongside Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert for Ghost House, Jd Lifshitz and Raphael Margules for BoulderLight, and Dane Eckerle for Bad Grey. Romel Adam and Jose Cañas will oversee for Ghost House, with Tracy Rosenblum overseeing for BoulderLight. Scott Greenberg of Lbi will exec produce, with Jazmyn Tanski overseeing.

Jared Padalecki might have to solo Season 16 of Supernatural if it ever happens, but there is one film from the actor’s filmography that seems to have been ripe for some sort of multi-canon crossover. In the film, called House of Wax, Jared Padalecki’s character, Wade, dies thanks to a serial killer who uses wax on his victims. However, pit the same character against Sam Winchester, and there might be a curb stomp that makes for great television. Of course, the character of the serial killer, Bo Sincalir, might not be able to jump universes, but having Sam Winchester take down a demon with a similar Mo can make for a great episode nonetheless.

Horror fans and critics can usually predict when a movie is going to bomb at the box office. Even with a star-studded cast, like Scream 4, some horror movies are doomed from the beginning. Most of the time, movies that tank at the box office are unwanted sequels or movies that are only loved by niche horror audiences.

Horror sequels and remakes already tend to be risky movies at the box office because not all audiences resonate with their originals or only enjoyed the movie subsequently. Some box office bombs later became fan favorites in the eyes of horror fans. House of Wax grossed over $32 million domestically with a $40 million budget but is considered a campy, classic horror movie. It can take some time for horror movies to resonate with audiences, but some horror movies were doomed from the beginning.

The untitled one-hour series finds Padalecki playing a doctor treating patients using rural medicine. Rural, of course, refers to medical establishments outside of massive community hospitals. Rural medical facilities are typically in semi-remote areas, meaning treatment is out of the way.

According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Anna Fricke’s untitled Texas medical drama revolves around a headstrong, devoted country doctor (Padalecki) who practices his unique style of improvisational medicine alongside his new protégé, a young doctor running from her past. Together, they operate a mobile clinic and heal the bodies and souls of their underserved community in the medical desert of rural Texas.

After Sony dropped the first teaser for its Until Dawn movie adaptation, Universal Pictures has followed suit with the release of the trailer for its new horror film, The Woman in the Yard. We first learned of The Woman in the Yard back in February 2024. At the time, it was announced that the movie was in development at Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions. Haunt Season is the latest in a long line of scary attractions turned into real houses of horror, films like Haunt and Teddy Told Me To. Of course, you can go even further back, before haunted houses were popular, to films like Tourist Trap, the original House of Wax, all the way back to Mystery in the Wax Museum from 1933. It offers a great setting for films, with plenty of opportunity for jump scares and misdirecting the viewer, which keeps attracting filmmakers. It also means that it gets harder and harder to stand out from all the other similar films.

Though they don't have nearly as many big-screen appearances as zombies or vampires, werewolves are still popular characters depicted in several films. It's not always the case, but most films with the hairy supernatural species show the werewolf characters as ordinary people turning into vicious killers. However, it's not a rule that werewolf stories must be told within the horror genre. Films like Teen Wolf have used lycanthropy to tell relatable coming-of-age stories through a comedic lens.

Stories of lycanthropy align with the 1980s cultural shift when conversations around sex and puberty were seeping into pop culture. Many of the '80s werewolf films deal with supernatural characters entering a new phase of life, with the physical transformation from human to wolf being representative of this change. Many of these transformations depicted in '80s werewolf films are presented as being painful, which happens to pair well with gory imagery typically associated with horror films.

Golden Globe Award-winning actor Kevin Bacon has set his next horror movie after starring in the smash-hit A24 slasher MaXXXine, and it's about to be an entire family affair. Bacon, his Emmy Award-winning wife Kyra Sedgwick, and their two adult children, Travis and Sosie Bacon, will star together in a new horror-comedy titled Family Movie.

The talented family will produce this film for Mixed Breed Films in collaboration with Norman Golightly at Dark Castle Entertainment. Dark Castle is best known for being behind other horror movies such as House on Haunted Hill, House of Wax, Orphan and Orphan: First Kill. Besides Family Movie, Dark Castle is currently working on a third Orphan movie.

“Terrifier 3” has not yet arrived in theaters, but already its writer and director Damien Leone confirmed that he will make “Terrifier 4.”

The third installment of the slasher franchise premiered Thursday at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. During a Q&a, Leone affirmed, “Yes there will be a ‘Terrifier 4.’” No further details were given.

The franchise gained a cult following with its first release, but it only became a big name in horror after the sequel came out. “Terrifier 2” surpassed expectations, reaching $15 million in box office sales. The movie’s budget, in contrast, was less than a tenth of that at $250,000.

Before you dart toward the comments to argue that George Huang’s How to Make a Monster isn’t a remake, let me explain why it’s my focus this month.

In 2001, legendary special effects artist Stan Winston co-produced a series of made-for-cable “remakes” alongside Colleen Camp and Lou Arkoff based on Aip horror flicks of the 1950s. They were all monster films based on Samuel Z. Arkoff properties (Lou’s father) under the banner “Creature Features.” Winston developed these films for Cinemax and HBO, where they’d haunt late-night rotations. He even turned his “Creature Features” villains into a toy line, although sales were underwhelming because the figures released out of synch with each premiere.

I used quotations around “remakes” above because 2001’s How to Make a Monster is a remake by title only. Herbert L. Strock’s 1958 original is about a makeup effects artist who uses his secret foundation recipe to control actors.

For as long as there have been films, there have been filmmakers attempting to enhance the theatrical experience through the use of gimmicks. From the red-eyed skeletons of William Castle to the “odorama” cards of John Waters’ Polyester, gimmicks are the puns of the filmmaking world: memorable and effective in small quantities, but annoying when overused.

That’s why I get why so many people reject 3D cinema. After all, modern theater screens ended up becoming oversaturated with lazily post-converted cash-grabs rather than movies that were shot on actual stereoscopic cameras. However, having just recently fixed my own aging 3D TV and binge-watched dozens of gimmicky genre films, I’m pleased to say that there are a surprising number of fun 3D experiences beyond the usual suspects.

With that in mind, here’s a list recommending six underrated horror movies that were shot in 3D!
