Military movies rarely incorporate horror elements, but a few successfully blend the two genres, creating a doubly unsettling mix. Movies like R-Point, The Lair, and Deathwatch combine psychological horror and visceral thrills with military settings and characters. Predator and The Keep are examples of military horror movies that blend military tropes and horror conventions for a winning genre mashup.
While military movies and horror movies might not always seem to go together, the terrors of war can sometimes blend perfectly with a more traditional sort of fantastical genre fare. Horror movies typically contrast a seemingly safe location, like a quiet neighborhood, with a terrifying threat. Halloween is set in the suburbs of Illinois, The Exorcist takes place in a well-appointed family home, and Poltergeist’s haunted house looks like a family's dream home at first. The contrast between these idyllic spaces and the dark secrets that lurk deep within them...

There’s certainly no denying all that Netflix has accomplished in recent years. Aside from producing original movies and TV series, the streaming giant completely changed the game when it came to how the average person consumes entertainment in the comfort of their own home. Just ask Blockbuster Video, which has since become but a memory from my youth.
Not content to rest on their laurels, it seems as though the company is looking to expand into other forms of media, namely comic books, toys and other collectibles. It probably hasn’t escaped them that tie-in comics are becoming big business (case in point, The Great Wall: Last Survivor) and they likely want a piece of that pie. Most recently, a digital comic was released that expanded upon one of its original movies in the form of Spectral: Ghosts of War, so perhaps that helped in motivating them to take the extra step.

The up-and-coming Brenton Thwaites has developed a taste for supernatural action.
On May 26th, the Aussie actor will be part of the star-studded crew to feature in Disney’s Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, a suitably swashbuckling sequel that finds Captian Jack Sparrow hunted to within an inch of his life by Salazar, an undead pirate played with great menace by the great Javier Bardem. Thwaites is attached to the part of Henry, a young man traversing the high seas in search of his missing father.
Looking further afield and Variety is reporting that Brenton Thwaites has come attached to decidedly different breed of supernatural action. It’s called Ghosts of War, and follows “five battle-hardened American soldiers assigned to hold a French chateau near the end of World War II. So far, 2017 has been incredibly generous when it comes to tie in-comics. In addition to readers being able to enrich their experiences with prequel tales for properties such as 24: Legacy and The Great Wall, Spectral: Ghosts of War becomes the latest to join the club.
Serving as a lead-in to the Netflix original film, Spectral, this digital offering is written by Seamus Kevin Fahey (Battlestar Galactica, Lethal Weapon) and Sean Fahey (BlackJack Press), with gorgeous painted artwork contributed by Zid (Son of Merlin, Kong: Skull Island).
Although the preview Legendary Comics have provided includes only two interior pages, we can probably all agree how stunning said painted artwork is. Being a fan of the likes of Alex Ross, it’s something I would love to see more of in the medium, as I...

You Are All A Bunch Of Idiots
We now know why Eobard is after the Spear of Destiny and why he needs The Legion Of Doom. It seems that Eobard Thawne needs the spear to rewrite history to put him back in existence. While putting himself back into existence Eobard is being chased by Black Flash, which is a speedster that was created from Zoom's downfall to The Flash. While Malcolm Merlyn and Damien Darhk are trying to change their destiny as well it seems Eobard has more on the line that the others.
The central part of this episode was Eobard, Damien, and Malcolm trying to get Rip to remember where the other parts of the Spear of Destiny are located. Each of their tactics to try and get the information from Rip comes up short because of his brain being completely wiped out from the beginning of the season.

She Must Have Had An Off Day
Last weeks episode had such a heavy plot line with Barry confronting what he saw in the future it was nice to see this weeks episode focus on H.R,.'s past. Dead or Alive returned back to the light heartedness that we felt in Season 1. The main plot line of this episode saw the introduction of a bounty hunter meta named Gypsy taking back H.R. to Earth-19.
While the majority of the team focused on saving H.R., Iris was busy recruiting her kid brother to help her stop a gun smuggler. It seems that even though Iris knows that her death is impending it hasn't stopped her from doing what she does best. Against Barry's and Joe's wishes Iris investigation caused her to foolishly recruit Wally to help her catch an arms dealer. The theory of knowing when you die...

Written by George Mann | Published by Titan Books | Format: Paperback, 352pp
George Mann’s pulp thriller does a lot to recapture the thrill of the early days of the genre. But in the Age of the Superhero, is that enough?
We live in the Age of the Superhero in media. That’s beyond doubt – we have superheroes on film, our TV screen, in our games. How long it lasts is academic, but at the moment we’re at peak superhero, with every type available to us in one form or another. It’s quite wonderful, but unfortunately there must be losers and though it doesn’t mean it’s a terrible book, I do feel that Ghosts of War is diminished by its timing.
The second in an ongoing series, Ghosts of War is set in an alternate history, where World War One was ended by the British deploying technological...

It seems a rarity to find an Asian ghost tale that doesn’t revolve around giant wet spots on walls, or 12 year old girls with six feet of hair. When I do happen to stumble upon one who’s focal scares haven’t been figuratively beaten to death over the last few years, I tend to make serious mental note; such an occurrence is that uncommon. Since you’re reading this, it may be needless to say I recently stumbled upon one of those eyebrow raising gems…

From Su-chang Kong, director of the critically acclaimed Korean shocker ‘R-Point’, comes The Guard Post (aka GP506), a similarly genre-bending foray into the cinema of fear that further cements his reputation as one of the most original filmmakers working in Asian cinema today. Already a hit on DVD, The Guard Post is now coming to Blu-ray, adding a whole new in-your-face dimension to this gore-drenched chiller. Combining the claustrophobic atmospherics of ‘The Orphanage’ with the tense paranoia of ‘The Thing’, Kong’s latest is part murder-mystery, part horror story – a terrifying tale of a group of soldiers caught up in a mysterious and haunting vortex of desperate alienation and homicidal madness. When [...]...
