The source novel was Heinrich Mann's Der Untertan (The Underling). Minor changes were made to the spelling of some of the character names, compared with those in the novel. The surname Heßling was Anglicised to Hessling, and Käthchen Zillich was changed slightly to Kätchen Zillich (without the silent H).
