Mickey Maguire and his pals are holding a benefit to buy a new chair for the golf course's groundskeeper. This means, of course, that Mickey (himself) will perform, but only after little brother Billy Barty has tormented fat comic Frank Alexander, who breaks his watch and wears plus fours.
This movie is the sort of movie in which the kids put on a show, and it is lousy, and that's what the audience is expected to find funny. Well, when I'm watching it, I'm the audience, and I don't think it's funny. I think it's cheap and mean and tiresome.
Fortunately -- if that's not putting it too strongly, Mickey Rooney, who plays Mickey Maguire, was a fairly talented singer and musician, even at the age of 11. He sings "Goodbye Broadway" and it's not too bad. Then he does an imitation of Chevalier singing "A New Kind of Love". As imitations of Chevalier singing, which was all the rage in this period -- even the Marx Brothers did it -- it's not awful. Better than anything Alfalfa could manage over at Our Gang, anyway.
