The film was launched in 1972 with Rajesh Khanna. Shakti Samanta decided to shelve the film. His son Ashim restarted in 13 years later with Jackie Shroff.
At one time Dharmendra was considered to play the role, finally Jackie Shroff played the role.

Palay Khan was a completly different film of Shakti Samanta and the film was ahead of its time.
