Anne Bronte is the least known of the three Bronte sisters and this is the lesser known of HER novels, which makes it the more welcome especially in view of the plethora of versions of Jane Austen's novels which have lately filled our screens. The casting - in particular the small boy who has such a big role - is excellent. Everything, costume, homes, furniture and so on , looks right. The Yorkshire countryside is photographed to splendid effect, though a lot of time is spent travelling through it, mainly in a coach but occasionally on horseback. I could have re-read the book instead of watching this and I may still do so but I feel seeing this film version will have deepened my appreciation.
