The part of Nikifor is played by a woman, Krystyna Feldman. She was chosen by the director because of her physical and spiritual resemblance to Nikifor. The actress was widely known for deliberately having no TV set, washing machine or refrigerator in her house in Poznan.
When the production began, Krystyna Feldman, dressed as a starving tramp, visited one of the oldest spas in Krynica and started begging for food. Visitors complained about a "stinking old man" disturbing spa guests and she was expelled from the area.
The director Krzysztof Krauze married his assistant director Joanna Kos-Krauze two days before shooting on location in the town hall of Nowy Sacz.
This had Britain's lowest grossing opening weekend for a film, making just £7.
