A Maryland couple who ran a controversial YouTube channel where they posted prank videos involving their blended family of five kids pleaded guilty earlier this week to child neglect charges and were sentenced to probation, People confirms.
Heather and Michael Martin, of Ijamsville, Maryland, entered Alford pleas to two counts each of misdemeanor child neglect, according to prosecutors.
Defendants who enter an Alford plea do not admit committing a crime but acknowledge that there is enough evidence for a conviction.

The story of Mildred and Richard Loving could easily have become a sledgehammer epic about social injustice. Writer-director Jeff Nichols instead sticks to the facts and recounts their ordeal with a quiet subjectivity that neither exaggerates nor sanctifies. The result is a marvelously affecting demonstration of how a civilized, progressive America rights a wrong. Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton are terrific as just plain folks oppressed by an obsolete law.

Director Jeff Nichols talks to us about the making of his sci-fi gem Midnight Special and moving onto making a big-budget movie...
A boy with extraordinary powers. Government agents and other sinister forces pursuing the boy and his family across America. Such a story might imply a noisy, aggressive chase thriller, but director Jeff Nichols’ Midnight Special offers up something far more thoughtful and intelligent. Sure, there are guns, stunts and some quite breathtaking images courtesy of those otherworldly powers possessed by the young Alton (Jaeden Liberher), but Midnight Special is also as dramatically involved and delicately crafted as Nichols’ earlier movies, which include the superb Take Shelter and Mud.

Slowly but surely, filmmaker Jeff Nichols is becoming one of the more popular names in independent cinema. In fact, some pundits already claim that he’s one of the new masters of the medium. This week, he takes his first step towards the mainstream with the science fiction film Midnight Special, a unique movie that could introduce him to a wider audience. Nichols makes hard to define cinema, and this is certainly the case as well. There are genre trappings, but this is as much about the nature of faith and fatherhood as it is a sci-fi tale. It’s not perfect, but Midnight Special is one of the more interesting releases of 2016 so far. The film is a strange animal, but certainly doesn’t lack for ambition. As it begins, we’re introduced to Roy (Michael Shannon), who is in a hotel room with Lucas (Joel Edgerton) and young...

First published in 2006, Miller’s story saw battle lines being drawn that split the Avengers and the Marvel Universe on a whole pitted against each other in an ideological struggle in which there was no clear right or wrong. Jon Kondelik and his brother James Kondelik are releasing a second trailer for The Divine Tragedies, today. A Dual Visions production, The Divine Tragedies takes a chapter from the 1920s Leopold and Loeb murder case, in which two men tried to get away with murder. In this update, Charles (Graham Denman) and Thomas (Jon Kondelik) are two brothers, who target a vulnerable, single mother. They believe their wits will win the day, until Detective Homer Gaul (Ken Foree) enters the picture. A true visual marvel, the second trailer shows more of the film's story, characters and dangerous situations. As well, the producers, along with director Jose Prendes, have unveiled several more posters. In quad form, the graphics host quotes from early film reviews. Matt Boiselle (Dreadcentral) and Mark Miller are quoted and both film critics enjoyed the surreal atmosphere of the film. All three new quad posters can also be seen here.

According to Da7e Gonzales of Latino-Review, film producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach plan to milk the Spider-Man universe for all its worth by creating a feature-lenth spy-thriler based on a young pre-Aunt May. Yes, an Aunt May movie. A movie about Aunt May as a youth, before she was shouldered with the responsibility of raising Peter Parker. The target mood is some sort of espionage story in the vein of AMC’s Mad Men, which sounds like a way of saying “classier Agent Carter” without name-dropping Marvel’s upcoming series. We know May Reilly Parker-Jameson as Aunt May, the sweet elderly woman that took care of Peter Parker after the death of her brother-in-law Richard Parker and his wife Mary. In 2003, Mark Miller wrote Marvel Comics' Trouble, which was a five-issue mini-series that presented an alternate past for May, Mary, Ben and Richard. The big twist, Richard...

The long-fabled director’s cut of Clive Barker‘s Nightbreed finally saw release this past week via Scream Factory’s beautiful new Blu-ray, and those of us who’ve been eagerly awaiting it since 1990 have one person to thank for it. That one person is Barker, obviously, as he not only wrote the short novel “Cabal” but also adapted it into a flawed but fun film filled with untapped promise. There are others beyond Barker, though, who deserve our gratitude as well. I’m talking about the fans. In the two plus decades since Nightbreed‘s release, rumors of additional footage fueled our imagination, and the more optimistic among you — because no, I did not believe this day would ever come — kept the hope alive online and at genre conventions. As more and more of that footage was rediscovered, and as “the Cabal Cut” made its way around the country, the...

Later this month, we’ll see the release of a brand new Hellraiser comic book mini-series. This time, the series will go with an anthology format, giving us new tales in the Hellraiser universe from a variety of popular and upcoming writers. The first issue contains the start of a six-part serial written by Mark Miller and Ben Meares, where a group sets out to steal Pinhead’s pins, and I caught up with both of them for the latest installment of our Q&A series.
We’ve seen a number of limited Hellraiser comic book series from Boom! and Clive Barker. How did the idea for this anthology series come about? Was it something that you pitched to Clive?
Ben Meares: Hellraiser, in my mind, has always had a certain magic to it because the rules of the mythos can be applied to almost any kind of story.
Mark Miller: Right.

The creature feature genre is often the most neglected of all the horror subgenres. It takes a back seat to more bankable premises such as slasher and paranormal horror. A new good creature feature is about as hard to find as the creature in the movie itself. Back in the day (way, way, back) in the 1950’s, the creature feature held the lion’s share of what any horror fan would want to see. In my humble opinion, it’s the biggest gamble for anybody that has plans to make a horror film now. Out of the gate, it has two strikes against it.

Last year at San Diego Comic Con, Scream Factory announced that they would be putting out Clive Barker’s 1990 film Nightbreed on Blu-Ray. Let’s be honest, it rocked horror fans’ socks off. A year later, Scream Factory announces the details about the release of two editions and some of those same fans are complaining about the price tag for the limited edition. I just want to preface this article with the fact that this knowledge that I have gained over the years of not only being a fan of the genre but dealing with studios and knowing some of the ins-and-outs of home media distribution. I don’t work in the industry, I just deal with it for this site and with my own local theatrical program, Late Nite Grindhouse. A bit later, it was revealed that it wouldn’t actually be the Cabal Cut, but a new, director approved Director’s Cut of the film. This is a new director’s cut of the film approved by Clive Barker. The reason the Cabal Cut isn’t what’s being released, is that basically, it’s the kitchen sink version of the film. Everything available was compiled to comprise the Cabal Cut, so the film is being whittled down, so that we still...

Nightbreed fans everywhere were excited to hear that Scream Factory would be bringing the movie to Blu-ray when it was first announced last year at Comic-Con. Since then, things have been relatively quiet, but Scream Factory, Morgan Creek, and Clive Barker have officially announced Nightbreed: The Director’s Cut. Not just a Blu-ray version of The Cabal Cut, Scream Factory was able to locate the previously missing original film elements from Warner Bros.
It has been revealed that Scream Factory is prepping Nightbreed: The Director’s Cut for an October release and will also be offering a limited edition set with a number of exclusive items. Here’s a look at the official press release and cover art:

Cher. What more needs to be said?
She’s the icon of icons, and her list of accomplishments would take forever to list. So on her 68th birthday, let’s pick the best of the best of her immense music catalog. For the purposes of this post, let’s keep it to Cher as a solo artist, and remember …

Chart Peak: N/A
When the album Half Breed came out in 1973, it represented a bit of a comeback after two previous chart disappointments, thanks to the #1 title song (which we’ll be seeing later), which makes it curious why the second and final single “Carousel Man” was only released as a promo to radio DJ’s, and therefore failed to chart on the Hot 100. It remains memorable thanks to that bizarre merry-go-round hook.

Hadrian's wall, Culloden, the poll tax, Jacob Rees-Mogg: yes, England has inflicted an awful lot of angst and pain on Scotland down the centuries – but, look, we still don't want you to leave
1 Sorry for calling every last one of you "Jock". We now know it's offensive, especially if you're a woman.
2 So sorry for the years of heartless Conservative governments that you never voted for that ripped the heart out of the Scottish mining, steel and shipbuilding industries, butchered public services and imposed an unwonted, dismal neo-liberal ethos on a land to which such a callous political and economic philosophy was inimical.
3 And for making you guinea pigs for Margaret Thatcher's disastrous poll tax, inflicting it on you a year before England and Wales, and then – somehow! – forgetting to backdate the rebate for the tax when it was abolished in the early 90s.

In a solid year full of great movies, many directors are bound to be snubbed for award nominations by the Directors Guild of America. And so for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for 2013 award noms, many were left in the dust such as Joel & Ethan Coen ("Inside Llewyn Davis"), Alexander Payne ("Nebraska"), and Spike Jonze ("Her").
The Guild revealed the nominations today for the DGA Awards (full nomination list below) and it's interesting to point out that Alfonso Cuaron, Steve McQueen, and Paul Greengrass are all first time nominees.
But will these nominations shape up the Oscar race? And will the Academy favor the Coen Brothers, or Payne, or Jonze instead of some of the DGA nominees?
We'll find out the winner of the 66th Annual DGA Awards on Saturday, January 25.
Here's the full list of nominations:

The Directors Guild of America has just announced their nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for 2013. The nominees are hardly a surprise (these are actually the five I predicted) and include some of the biggest names in the industry, such as Martin Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street) and David O. Russell (American Hustle).
Other highly predictable nominees include Alfonso Cuaron for his brilliant work on Gravity (the best film of the year) and Steve McQueen for 12 Years a Slave. It’s interesting to note that this is where most of the competition has centered throughout awards season, with these two taking a vast majority of the awards. However, while favor started out in McQueen’s corner, the awards over the past month have shown that Cuaron is the clear favorite, making this award his to lose.

In her recent Hollyblog “Independent TV Financing in the Digital Age: Who’s In,” lawyer Alissa Miller discusses the proliferation of Netflix, Hulu, YouTube/Google, Amazon and other digital distribution platforms. She says, “In order to attract an extensive group of subscribers, digital distributors need to continue to provide an immense amount of original, high-quality content” and, “as a result, more producers have been able to enter the market to fill the demand for content, and the need for independent financing for new productions has increased.” I recently experienced being one of these producers firsthand while both setting out to find the financing.

NBC Digital began laying off employees this morning. According to insiders, about 4 out of a staff of 80 got the axe. NBC declined to comment. The prelude to the layoffs came two weeks ago when Rob Hayes, Evp Digital Media for NBC, announced a division overhaul, in which four new executives were added to the digital team: Michael Martin, Svp, Product, Technology & Operations; Tom Blaxland, VP, Production; Eddie Lee, VP, Technology; and Ross Cox, VP, Product. In addition to those hires, Matt Allen and Trideev Dasgupta wee upped to VP, Digital Integrations and VP, Digital Business Development & Strategy, respectively, reporting to Ann McGowan, Svp, Digital Business Development & Strategy. Today’s layoffs are the result of that restructuring, insiders say. In some cases, a soundtrack can take a game from being good to great. That's not only the case with modern games either, as the days of yore were able to provide memorable tunes that continue to stick with gamers today. We're digging into the past to un-earth and re-experience five Snes musical masterpieces that stand out from the crowd.
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest
The enchanting soundtrack for Donkey Kong Country 2 was composed by David Wise. No stranger to simian-symphonies, David also created the music for DKC2's predecessor Donkey Kong Country, and went on to score a hat trick by composing for the third installment of the series (Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble).
The three games did battle to make it onto this list, copious bananas were thrown and many monkey tantrums were had. It is undoubtable that all three soundtracks have...

We’ve already heard from creator of the Kick-Ass comics Mark Miller and now it’s the turn of the three main cast members. We were there to witness some of the final battle sequence which takes place in the Red Mist’s (now The Motherf*cker) evil lair. The good guys were all dressed in their superhero outfits, with the bad guys looking particularly vicious, welding steel bars and readying to take their positions for what will undoubtedly be an epic battle in the finished film.
We got to see a few takes where Aaron Johnson and Christopher Mintz-Plasse’s stunt doubles went head to head. Not long after this, those same men were both outside gasping for air as the wet suit and the brand new leather fetish suit modeled by The Motherf*cker were beginning to take their toll! "In the world of Latin dance competitions, Miami has seen it all. But it's never seen this much fat," begins the preview for one very wacky film called "Tony Tango."
It premiered at Miami International Film Festival earlier this month and has screenings at Chicago Comedy Film Festival, San Diego Film Festival, San Diego Latino Film Festival and New York International Latino Film Festival.
Think of "Tony Tango" as a much more light-hearted "Bernie," in which Jack Black played a chubby undertaker. Like Bernie, Tony is affable, rotund, and a hit with the over-50 ladies.
Tony and his dance partner must train to win a Latin dance competition and use the winnings to save a family business.
The "Nacho Libre"-esque Tony is played by Maxx Maulion, a comedian from Fort Lauderdale who wrote the film with Coral Springs native Andres De Oliveira, who also acts in the film as Tony's sidekick.

Over the past few years, Mark Miller has established a close working relationship with Clive Barker: he’s the co-head of Barker’s production company, Seraphim Films; he served as assistant editor on Barker’s third Abarat novel, Absolute Midnight, and is editing the author’s eagerly-anticipated book The Scarlet Gospels; and he’s been instrumental in getting the director’s cut of Barker’s film Nightbreed in front of audiences.
On the comics front, Miller wrote several issues of the latest incarnation of Hellraiser for Boom! Studios, and is now co-writing a just-announced new series with Barker called New Genesis, about a man who claims he is God returned to Earth. Even with this obviously busy schedule, Miller was kind enough to take a few moments to chat with FEARnet.com about the new series.

Clive Barker and comics books have a very long history of harmonious co-existence. We've seen plenty of Hellraiser, etc., splashed across illustrated pages, but now it's time for something completely different. The genesis of a new property, if you will.
USA Today is reporting that Barker and Boom! Comics have gotten together to launch an exciting comic property called New Genesis. This will be the first original comic created and written by the horror master. Featuring art by Haemi Jang (Hellraiser: The Road Below), the 12-part series is the Old Testament of the Bible in present day, "if God were to come back and tell you how we all got it wrong and what everything really meant," says co-writer Mark Miller.
"We're making something that is a radical re-reading of ancient structures. It does have the word Genesis in the title, after all. That should be a dead giveaway," adds Barker,...
