GFOS is like a missing chapter of Evangelion and slots in nicely between episodes 15 and 16 apart from one scene. The story is about a new exchange student called Mana who is attached to Shinji from the start which makes Asuka jealous.

It explains a few of the mi-stories like why the pilots have to be 14 years old and some others.

Its not really relevant to the series but can be placed in very nicely and explores Asukas relationship with Shinji.

Well worth picking up there is also an English translation around.
