Scenes set in France were actually filmed in Jersey for financial reasons.
Scripts for the series were submitted very late by the original adaptor, and director Michael E. Briant found them to be not what was expected. Having read and reread the source novel (which had formed the basis of his casting decisions), he wrote the scripts himself, though - as was common BBC practice - received no credit for doing so.
