The show was cancelled after its first season in Australia, which had been originally filmed with a cliffhanger ending in anticipation of a second season. When the series was axed, the cast were brought back to film scenes which tied up the storylines at the last minute to give the show some sort of closure. This new ending was shown in subsequent screenings--though not ITV in the UK.
The series was a continuation of the 3-part mini-series Return to Eden (1983), transmitted in Australia in 1983. The storyline was set seven years after the mini-series' ending, and several of the original cast members reprised their roles. Stephanie's children, Sarah and Dennis, had to automatically be recast since they would now be grown adults.
Both the official DVD release in France (Koba Films) and the Netherlands (Dutch Filmworks B.V.) include the re-edited last episode with extra final scenes, which gives the show closure.
Much like the Ewings of Dallas (1978) which inspired this series, several characters have personalised number-plates on their cars, from Dan's Range Rover (DM-1) to Dennis' Porsche (4-PLAY). Stephanie favoured a more dignified SH-1 for her chauffeur-driven car and SH-2 for her BMW 3231.
A vinyl album of Brian May's music for the series, "Return To Eden--Original Television Soundtrack" was released on the Varèse Sarabande label at the time of first broadcast, and subsequently reissued in 2010 on CD by BSX Records.
